Episode Thirteen

Background: John and Bo discuss the tape John received. It was of a press conference John did in New Jersey about five years ago, when he was on the case of another serial killing, The White Rose Killer. During the press conference John taunted the killer to get him to react. They believe the tape is from the killer. Bo thinks that the killer is taunting John, he did not catch him then, and he is telling John to try and catch him now. They hope that the police station surveillance camera may have captured who left the video.

John explains to Bo that the White Rose Killer went after brides, always a week before their wedding. The killer left a calling card, a bouquet of white roses. John then tells Bo that he was pulled off the case after his fiancée Caitlin was killed in a failed robbery; he was also wounded and spent seven weeks in the hospital from a gun shot wound.

They get the surveillance tape, and notice a kid with tattoos. Marcie sees him often, he hangs out at Angel Square, and at Carlotta's diner. They go there and spot the kid. He tells him that he could not see the guy who gave him the tape, he was wearing a coat, hat, and scarf. The kid said he was given 20 dollars to deliver the package. They ask him if there was anything unique about the bill he was given. He remembers there was some type of cool symbol on it. He does not have it but he used it to buy his meal. They ask Carlotta Vega for all the 20s she received. Lucky she still has it. The killer has left them a message, "You go where I lead you."

John gets another call from the killer. The killer asks if he got the gift. The killer wonders how it was like for John to relieve "that night." John does not know what the killer means. The killer then advises him to watch *all* the tape this time -- to the end.

Jennifer comes by the station to talk to John, she is outside, looking through the blinds into Bo's office, just as John begins to watch the tape. Though it looks through, John waits, suddenly there is a scene of John and a woman in bed, it is his fiancée. She tells him she hears some noise. He tells her he is going to investigate. She tells him she loves him. Just then there is a sound of a gunshot, sand John calling her name.

Jessica runs off to find Natalie and tell her what she saw.

It dawns on John that the White Rose Killer also killed Caitlin, and that he taped the whole thing. John vows to find him and kill him. John, breaks down, and begs Caitlin's forgiveness.

(Air date Thursday, February 12th, 2004)

Scene One: At Rodi's the DA, Daniel Coulson, stops by Nora's table and congratulates her for her good work trying the Todd Manning case. However, he also points out that she did have some trouble when her primary expert did not show up. Nora is confused as to why Rae never showed up. She tells him she called Rae's secretary, and Rae missed some appoints at the university.

Scene Two: We see Rae's body lying in a spartan and dark room.

Scene Three: Bo drops by, Nora tells him that Rae's housekeeper says she never came home. It appears no one has seen Rae. Meanwhile, Stephen is at the bar waiting for some food. He goes over to talk to Nora.

NORA: Hey, Stephen!

STEPHEN: Nora, how are you?

NORA: Ah, I'm fine, (frowning) have you seen Rae, at all?

STEPHEN: (Obviously lying) No, no actually we had an early dinner date last night, and she stood me up, (pretending he does not know what is going on) why?

NORA: (Confused) She didn't show up for court today either. (Thinking, somewhat concerned) Ah.... it's like she vanished overnight.

STEPHEN: Well I'm sure there's some logical reason.

NORA: Yes, I'm sure there is, what is it?
She gives him a quizzical look. He tilts his head, with an equally quizzical look, but there also seems a hint of smugness behind it.

Scene Four: Back in the room where Rae's body is, she suddenly awakens. She walks around the room, terrified, and trying to hide her fear. There is just a little bit of light coming from under the door. There is also a sink, and a phone on the wall. She goes to the phone but, of course, it is not operational. She is frantic, and gasping from the terror. She shouts out, but no one responds.

Scene Five: Back at Rodi's, Haver pays Natalie for his take-out, all the while watching her, almost maliciously.
STEPHEN: Thank you very much.
He goes back over to Nora's table.
STEPHEN: Ah, I tell you what, if I hear from Rae I will call you, and hopefully you will do the same for me.

NORA: Oh, yes, absolutely, I will (smiles).

STEPHEN: Good, so hmmm, goodnight
He acts like he wants to say something more, but starts to walk off.
NORA: Goodnight.

STEPHEN: (Walking backwards) Goodnight.

NORA: Enjoy your--

STEPHEN: My--

NORA: Take-out.

STEPHEN: Take-out, yes I will.
He still is not watching where he is going and bumps into Jessica.
STEPHEN: Ohh.... forgive me, I'm so sorry.

JESSICA: (Seeing it is Haver) Oh, Dr, Haver (brushing back her hair) I'm sorry.

STEPHEN: Ummm, listen would you (motioning over to the side) mind.... could we just talk for a minute?

JESSICA: Yeah.... umm....
Jessica walks over to the side, Haver looks around then follows her. Thinking how to tell her something. He touches his lip with is finger, as if trying to figure out the best way to put it. Though is it all an act?
STEPHEN: Ummmm, I hope this doesn't sound too strange. But-uh, I just had a couple of meetings with Agent McBain, and I just think it would be, uh, well it might be a good idea if you limited your (frowning for effect) time with him.
Jessica listens intently to what he has to say.
STEPHEN: Yo..... you see he's....he's.... he's starting to become more and more obsessed with this killer.

JESSICA: (Pursing her lips together) Yeah, well, I can see why....

STEPHEN: You see the problem is when someone in law enforcement becomes (gesturing) frustrated for so long they tend lose their judgment. Now (gesturing) I know that you are trying to get information for your article, but I'm just saying, try to.... (trying to put it diplomatically or doing it for an act) don.....don't put pressure on John at this time. He..... He's.... he's.... well he's becoming obsessed (gesturing) like I said. And.... and-uh, well don....don.... don't take this the wrong way.

JESSICA: (Jessica frowns the shakes her head) Sure. Okay.

STEPHEN: Ahhh....
He pauses again as if trying to put it correctly. Jessica stares waiting for his response. Haver seems to be putting on an act, trying to seem sincere, while purposefully making Jessica doubt John.
STEPHEN: He may tend to become irrational about this case. I mean, we h-h-hope it won't happen, but I've seen it happen before.

JESSICA: Uuuummmmm, yeah (obviously remembering the video of John's fiancée's death) alright, um, he's having a hard time.

STEPHEN: Yes, yes, (looking like a concerned therapist) he certainly is. Poor guy. Well, I'll see you tomorrow, then (flashing his charming look).

JESSICA: Yes, definitely (motioning with her notebook).

STEPHEN: Good.
Stephen walks off. Jessica thinks about what he has said and then goes over to talk to her sister Natalie.

Scene Six: Back in the hidden room, Rae is banging on the door, and shouting.
RAE: OPEN THIS DOOR!!! DAMNIT!!!
Collapsing against the door in frustration.
RAE: God! (Almost sobbing) What do you want? What do you want? Wh.... why? Why are you doing this? YOU'RE A COWARD!!! YOU SON-OF-A-BIT--
Suddenly, from out of nowhere an ominous voice is heard. It is the killer using the voice distortion device.
KILLER: You're wasting your breath.
Rae stops, terrified, she groans, and breathes heavily. He speaks in that stilted, slow manner making it even more horrifying.
KILLER: No one can hear you. Except me!
She looks around frantically, but sees nothing.
RAE: Wh.... where are you? (Continuing to breathe heavily) For God's sake, (panting) come in here, and face me!

KILLER: All in good time.
Rae looks around frantically trying to figure out from where the voice is coming.
KILLER: (Cont.) Alllll.... innnn.... goooddd.... timmmeeee.
Scene Seven: Nora and John go to Statesville to talk to Troy. Rae's disappearance seems to have resulted from what Troy told her. John and Bo remembered that Rae had wanted to tell them something but wanted to think about it first. Troy seems confused again. Troy is glad to see Nora. However, he does not remember John. They ask him about Rae. However, he does not remember her visiting him. They ask if he talked to her about the killer. Again Troy is confused. John gets frustrated at Troy. Nora notices that he appears drugged. John says that no one has had access to him except the guards.

Scene Eight: Rae is shouting to the killer.
RAE: YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW WHO YOU ARE! DON'T YOU!?
The camera angle is from above giving the effect that Rae is being monitored. Rae looks around, she is like some animal in a cage; it gives the effect of claustrophobia.
KILLER: (From someplace) Of course you do.

RAE: (Panting) SHOW YOUR FACE THEN! YOU COWARD!
She walks back into a wall, just then the lights come on startling her.
RAE: Ahhh! (She walks back) God! (Panting harder).

KILLER: I could come back another time.

RAE: NO! No! No!

KILLER: Or not. And then no one would find you. Ever.

RAE: (Panting) What do.... what do you want? WHAT.... You brought me here alive for some reason. Wha.... what is it?

KILLER: Ask me what you really what to know.
The light in the background is round and bright, it gives off an spooky feeling framing Rae, it is like some lab, and she is like some experiment, or test animal. She is terrified, and off balance.
RAE: Okay. (Looking around trying to see where the voice is) Okay (she turns around; she pants, and swallows, as if trying to muster up courage, gasping) Uhhh, ARE YOU GOING TO KILL ME?

KILLER: That de-pends.

RAE: (Gasping, afraid of the answer) Uhh, (gasping) on what?

KILLER: Oooonnnn, you!
The camera quickly pans onto her terrified face, it is almost like it is the killer focusing in on her reaction.

Scene Nine: At Rodi's, Jessica tells Natalie about seeing the tape of Caitlin being murdered and John getting shot. She tells her sister what Haver said. Natalie is off work and she is going to go talk to John.

Scene Ten: John has sent some negatives from the press conference in New Jersey to the photo department hoping that they can enhance them and he could spot the killer in the audience. Natalie comes by and tells her what Jessica told her. John is rather short with her. He tells her that the killer is playing games with him. He knows the killer is watching them, and it is not safe for her to be around. Jessica comes by, she has the photos from the lab. Jessica frustrates him further when she asks him questions about the photos and trying to find the killer in them. He yells at her, and tells her to leave, and leave him alone. She leaves and mutters to herself that Stephen was right about John losing it.

Scene Eleven: Back in Rae's cell, she is pacing around like a trapped animal. She goes to a sink and tries to wash up, but there is no water. She throws a hand towel in disgust.
RAE: Of course it didn't work (rubbing her forehead). (Talking to herself, and pacing around) Why don't you answer me, why? (Talking to the killer) Okay, you said whether I live or die, it's up to me, now, (panting) you didn't tell me how! Di.... is it something.... I do? Or is it something I DON'T DO?
The camera angle is from above, again as though she is being observed.
RAE: (Softly) What? WHAT? Ah you know, this is a helluva time to take some stupid trip, you....

KILLER: You are about to make your debut... as an ac-tress.

RAE: (Scoffing laugh) Oh yes, I see. This is how it's done, isn't it.

KILLER: Your script is right un-der the door.
Rae looks towards the door, and sees the a sheet of paper. She walks over quickly, picks it up, and unfolds it.
RAE: What am I supposed to do with this (reading it)?

KILLER: Go to the phone. Call the police. And ask for Bo.... Buchanan!

RAE: (Sarcastically) I would love to do that except the phone.... doesn't work.

KILLER: It does nooowww.
Rae looks shocked. She runs to the phone, and punches a number.
KILLER: Go ahead, caallll, when he answers I want you to read from that script.
Rae freezes, and then looks at the script. Her hand is slightly shaking.
KILLER: Buuttt, if you deviate by one word....
Fright end she hangs up.
KILLER: (Cont.) ....or try to alert the police, you'll be dead in one minute.  
Scene Twelve: Bo and Nora are talking in his office, Marcie comes to the door and tells them that Rae is on the line. He puts it on conference phone so Nora can hear and talk too.
BO: Rae?
Back in her cell Rae is terrified. She reads the script, though stilted.
RAE: Bo, (reading the script) I'm calling because I haven't been able to reach Nora.

BO: Nora's right here.
Nora comes to the phone.
NORA: Hey, Rae, Hi! Ah, where've you been?

RAE: I'm so sorry (reading from the script) I missed testifying in court, but I had an emergency, a call from a suicidal patient, I had to go to her in.... instantly. I...

NORA: Oh fine, I.... just wish you'd call (gesturing)....
Bo is sitting with his arms crossed listening in. Nora and Bo look at each other.
NORA: (Cont.) ....we're.... we're getting worried about you.

RAE: I can't say much more about it to protect the patient's privacy, you understand.

NORA: No, yes absolutely (looking towards Bo) ah...., can I count on you tomorrow to.... in court?

RAE: (Still trying to read the script) I promised I'll be in touch as soon as the crisis is over.
Nora seems annoyed. Bo then talks, he seems to notice how oddly she is sounding.
RAE: Are you sure you are alright?
Terrified, now she is not reading from the script, and appears to be ad libbing.
RAE: I'm just worried about the patient, Bo. (Licking her lip) I'll be in touch.
She hangs up, putting her lips to her hand. She is obviously upset because she realizes she deviated from his script.
RAE: (Talking to the killer) I did the best could.

KILLER: Eeexxxxceeelllent! And congratulations for sticking to the script..... And your little ad lib.... you clearly want to stay alive.

RAE: Yes, of course I do. Okay...
The camera again focuses from above.
RAE: (Cont.) What happens now?

KILLER: Nooowww, let's talk about my next victim. Shall we? And how. And when. Shheee's going to die.
Background: Llanview celebrated Valentine's Day. Asa married Renée Divine for the third time. Al and Marcie shared a poignant moment at midnight. Then Al became Michael, but lost all his memories. Ben Davidson came out of his coma temporarily and he Viki shared some special moments, before he slipped back. He told her to move on.
