JACK: Maybe it's already too late.

MELISSA: Jack, come on, you can't think that way.

JACK: What am I supposed to think? We can't find her. We don't have the slightest clue of where she could be.

MELISSA: Jack you've got to stay calm. You have to take care of yourself. You haven't been eating anything.

JACK: I'm not hungry!

MELISSA: Making yourself sick is not going to help Kayla. There's nothing any of us can but wait. I just wish there was something I could do to help you.

JACK: You are doing something. You're just being here. That helps.
STEVE WALKS UP TO THE BAR AND LOOKS AT JACK.

JACK: Excuse me.

MELISSA: Jack wait, please.
JACK WALKS OVER TO STEVE.
JACK: Steve? Look I need to talk to you.

STEVE: Wait a minute, wait a minute junior. No, not tonight. I came here to have a nice quiet beer by myself. I need some space alright. I don't want any hassles.

JACK: Look, I know you're just as worried about my wife as I am. I don't know any other way to say this. I need your help.

STEVE: Ya want my help eh?

JACK: Yeh.

STEVE: What for?

JACK: To find my wife! Look I don't know where else to turn. You're my last hope. Will you help me? Will you work with me to find Kayla?

STEVE: (He slowly turns to face Jack) No.

STEVE: I'm sorry Junior but I can't help you with this.

JACK: Can't or won't? Look I'm not exactly thrilled about asking for your help in the first place.

STEVE: Then why are you bothering eh?

JACK: Because I know how you feel about my wife.

STEVE: Oh come on man.

JACK: Don't even start! I know how you feel about her. Her life is at stake. Does that make it worth your while Steve? Look if I can swallow my pride enough to ask you don't you think we can both put this garbage behind long enough to find her, for her sake?

STEVE: Hey somebody! I ordered a beer. How hard it is to get a beer in this place?
JACK GRABS STEVE'S ARM.
JACK: What is the matter with you?

STEVE: Nothing's the matter with me dude but if you don't back off you're going to have a big problem.

JACK: I know you care about her. Why don't you want to find her?

STEVE: What makes you think she want's to be found huh?

JACK: What are you talking about?

STEVE: Did you ever think about the possibility that Kayla ran away from something, or someone?

JACK: Don't you talk to me like that....
JACK GRAPPLES WITH STEVE AND MELISSA COMES OVER TO BREAK IT UP.
MELISSA: Jack you don't want to do this!

JACK: You're right. It's not worth it but if I find out that you had anything to do with my wife's disappearance....

STEVE: I didn't.

JACK: Come one Melissa. Let's go. This place is starting to stink.
JACK AND MELISSA LEAVE JUST AS JO WALKS IN. SHE ASKS STEVE WHAT HE IS UP TO. HE PUSHED JACK AND KAYLA TOGETHER AND KNOW HE TRYING TO KEEP THEM APART. SHE BEGS STEVE NOT TO CAUSE TROUBLE BETWEEN HIM AND JACK.

SCENE EIGHT: JACK AND MELISSA ARE WALKING ALONG THE WHARF.
JACK: I can't believe all these lousy detectives. They tell me what I already know. We're not going back to another meeting just to find out nothing's happened.

MELISSA: Jack it's okay.

JACK: It's not okay Melissa. It's about as far from okay as it gets.

MELISSA: I'm sorry!

JACK: No.... I'm sorry. You're doing everything you can for me and all I can do is snap at you.

MELISSA: Well if it's the only way I can help....snap away.

JACK: I can't believe how lucky I am to have such a good friend in such bad times.

MELISSA: You should see me in the good times.

JACK: I think I could use some good times.

MELISSA: Yeh couldn't we all.

JACK: You know....

MELISSA: I'm sure you'll have yours soon Jack.

JACK: ....when you say that I almost believe you. I don't think I'd even remember what a good time feels like....

MELISSA: I know how hard it was for you to go to Steve for help like that. I don't know why he didn't.

JACK: I don't need Steve Johnson. I gave up trying to understand him along time ago so I wish you would do the same. I.... Melissa.... I'm....

MELISSA: I know you're....

JACK AND MELISSA: (In unison)....sorry.

JACK: I seem to be saying that a lot lately don't I?

MELISSA: Yeh, you do....

JACK: You know I don't what I'd be able to do if I didn't have your support.

MELISSA: Jack I'd do anything for you. I'd do anything to help you get through this.

JACK: I know that and I've come to depend on it too and I still haven't told you what it means to me, not enough anyway. (Pause) It means a lot Melissa.

MELISSA: Thanks.

JACK: Well I guess I should be getting you home. It's late.

MELISSA: (She nods) Okay.
AS MELISSA BEGINS TO FOLLOW JACK SHE DROPS HER BAG AND PAPERS FALL OUT.
JACK: I'll get it.....

MELISSA: It's okay. I've got it. (She hurriedly puts the papers back and retrieves her bag.)

JACK: What was all that?

MELISSA: Nothing. It's just some letters. Listen maybe you should just go home. I'm the other way and it's getting pretty chilly.

JACK: That's no problem. I can walk you the whole way.

MELISSA: No I'm fine really.

JACK: (Pause) Alright.... whatever you want.
JACK BENDS OVER AND KISSES MELISSA TENDERLY ON THE RIGHT CHEEK.
JACK: Thanks again.

MELISSA: (Very quietly) That's alright.

JACK: So I'll see you tomorrow?

MELISSA: Yeh, bright and early.

JACK: Good night then.
JACK LEAVES AND MELISSA OPENS HER BAG AND READS A LOVE LETTER SHE HAS WRITTEN TO JACK.
MELISSA: God I wish you were mine!
SCENE ONE: STEVE AND MARCUS ARE SITTING AT SHENANIGAN'S DISCUSSING WHAT IT WAS LIKE IN THE ORPHANAGE THINKING ABOUT FINDING THEIR FAMILIES. MARCUS REMEMBERS THAT STEVE HAD A YOUNGER BROTHER. STEVE TELLS HIM THAT IT IS NOT ALL ROSES WHEN YOU FIND YOUR FAMILY AND THAT THINGS CAN GET COMPLICATED.

SCENE THREE: STEVE TAKES HER BACK TO THE ROOM HE HAD HER IN BEFORE. SHE IS DELIRIOUS BUT GRADUALLY RECOVERS.

SCENE FOUR: JACK IS AT MELISSA'S APARTMENT SEARCHING THROUGH A BRIEFCASE. MELISSA WALKS UP BEHIND HIM AND LOOKS VERY CONCERNED.
MELISSA: Jack I'm really sorry. I've been here all morning but I guess those notes from last night did something funny to my phone. I didn't think your father was announcing his candidacy until next week.

JACK: Things change pretty quickly around here. Guess we have to get used to it! So how does it feel knowing a Presidential candidate?

MELISSA: I don't know. As you said, I guess like you said, I'll get used to it.

JACK: Are you alright?

MELISSA: I'm fine. Would you like some coffee?

JACK: No, no actually that's what I'm here for. Wait a minute, wait a minute, I have a copy of this for you. Dad made the announcement this morning at the Continental Hotel but he wants to meet me at Shenanigan's with the press for a, you know, informal lunch. We're trying to be normal if we can be normal. Anyway I want you to come along and rescue me if I need it.
MELISSA IS DISTRACTED AS SHE NOTICES ONE OF HER LOVE LETTERS TO JACK ON THE TABLE.

MELISSA: Um....well I have to get dressed. How about if I meet you there?

JACK: No, no, no, no. I'll just wait for you. Look I have to make a call. I have to call Abe and check on Kayla if that's alright.

HE WALKS BACK TO THE TABLE BUT MELISSA JUMPS AHEAD AND GRABS THE BRIEFCASE AND STARTS TIDYING UP THE PAPERS.

MELISSA: No Jack I told you the phones are out of order.

JACK: Melissa, what's wrong?

MELISSA IS FRANTICALLY PUTTING THE LETTERS AWAY.

SCENE FIVE: MELISSA IS ABLE TO STOP JACK FROM SEEING THE LETTER.
JACK: What am I saying? You're not even dressed. Wa....oh no....am I interrupting something? If you....if you're not alone....

MELISSA: Jack no, no. I'm just a mess. I can't be ready in thirty minutes Jack.

JACK: Oh sure you can. I'll make my call from the car alright. We have to be there in thirty minutes so you really need to rush okay. And I have some other things I need to go over with you in the car....

MELISSA: Jack?

JACK: So I'll see you out there in just a moment.

HE WALKS OUT THE DOOR AND AND MELISSA PUTS THE LETTERS IN HER KITCHEN DRAWER.

SCENE SIX: JACK, HARPER AND ANJELICA WALK THROUGH SHENANIGAN'S WHICH IS FILLED WITH PRESS. THEY WALK UP ON THE STAGE.
REPORTER 1: Who do you want as a running mate?

HARPER: Well I'd like to see Jack.

JACK: Not this time. (He laughs)
STEVE ENTERS AND HE AND JACK STARE AT ONE ANOTHER ACROSS THE ROOM. STEVE WALKS UP TO THE BAR WHERE MELISSA IS ON THE PHONE.
MELISSA: Well you know he's here at Shenanigan's if you do hear something.Well thank you....
JACK OBSERVES MELISSA AND STEVE.
STEVE: (To waiter) Joey, hey man, where's that go order?....(To Melissa) So the big man finally announced eh?

MELISSA: Two minutes ago.

STEVE: Why aren't you over there with him?

MELISSA: Well ....um....assistants aren't supposed to be in those kinds of pictures. It's not right. Jack's hoping all this press might help him find Kayla.

STEVE: Has he heard anything yet?

MELISSA: No, not yet. He has me call Abe everywhere we go.

STEVE: You've got a lousy job Melissa.

REPORTER 1: Jack, have you had any word on your wife?

JACK: No.

REPORTER 1: What about your campaign for Assemblyman?

JACK: My wife is missing right now, how do you expect me to answer that?

REPORTER 2: Are you still a candidate?

JACK: My wife is my first priority . I hope you all understand that.

ANJELICA: You're not going to believe this but I think Kayla is more excited about Jack becoming an Assemblyman than Jack is and I know when we find her the first words out of her mouth will be: How's the campaign going Jack?

HARPER: It can't be stressed enough that if anybody out there knows Kayla's whereabouts at all. Anything at all, please please call the police. If you want to remain anonymous, fine, we'll respect that.

JACK: We will find her. Please print that. We will find her.
STEVE LEAVES WITH THE FOOD.
JACK: I'm going to take a break.

ANJELICA: Jack are you okay?

JACK: Yeh, I'm fine, fine.

ANJELICA: Wanna know what?

JACK: What?

ANJELICA: You're going to make a superb politician.
JACK HUGS ANJELICA.
JACK: Ooh! I love you....

MELISSA: Jack you're terrific.

JACK: Thanks.

HARPER: Of course he's terrific. He's going to make a great politician, he's my son isn't he?

SCENE SEVEN: JACK ON THE WHARF WITH A PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR.

PI: The police have got all the roads covered, planes, trains, buses. My bet she's still in town someplace.

JACK: Then why haven't you been able to find her?

PI: Mr. Deveraux. I understand your concern but I can't go door to door and I've tried everything else.

JACK: Yeh! Did you go after Steve Johnson like I asked?

PI: Just like you told me.

JACK: Bull! I happen to know he shook you without even raising a sweat.

PI: Look we kept an eye on him alright. I have feeling he doesn't know diddley.

JACK: Right! So why don't you start going door to door?

PI: Oh come on....

JACK: I said, go door to door! Now are you deaf and dumb?

PI: I haven't the authority!

JACK: And I don't care!

PI: Nor the manpower!

JACK: Then get it!

PI: Look Mr. Deveraux. Only police can search houses, alright?
HARPER WALKS UP BEHIND JACK.

HARPER: thank you Mr. Wolf, I'm sure you're doing all you can.

PI: Well maybe you can convince your son of that?

HARPER: Would you excuse us please?

PI: Yeh sure. No problem. (Pause.) One thing.

HARPER: Yes.

PI: Has it occurred to anybody that maybe the reason why we can't find this lady is that she doesn't want to be found?

JACK: What's that supposed to mean?

HARPER: Jack!

PI: Just a thought.

JACK: She could be lying somewhere too sick to get to a phone!

PI: Could be, could be!

JACK: Just go find her!

PI: Yeh sure.
PI WALKS AWAY.
HARPER: Jack I know this is eating at you. But you've got to get a grip on yourself. It's not helping Kayla. And you know if the press ever got a hold of the fact that you're losing control like this, that you're losing your grip, it would not look good on your record. Now please, please, I know it's tough but you've got to keep cool.

JACK: What if she doesn't want to be found?

JACK (CONT.): Dad I'm scared, I'm getting really scared.

HARPER: Scared about what?

JACK: That I'm not going to see Kayla again.

HARPER: Jack you will see her again. They'll find her....

JACK: I don't know about that....

HARPER: ....and she wants to be found. You get that idea out of your head. It's ridiculous, it's impossible and you know it.

JACK: I guess so.

HARPER: You guess so? I said you know so!

JACK: (Sigh) Alright I do!

HARPER: Good now come on, we've got a campaign to run. That is, if you're up to it.

JACK: Of course I'm up to it.

HARPER: Alright!

JACK: Deveraux blood!

HARPER: No question about it.
JACK AND HARPER WALK OFF ARM IN ARM.

SCENE ONE: JACK IS AT NEIL CURTIS'S HOUSE TALKING TO JO.
JACK: Is Dr. Curtis here?

JO: No, he's having dinner with Miss Forrester.

JACK: Actually I.... actually I....have no idea why I'm here. I was driving around and thinking and I.... suddenly found myself pulling into your driveway.

JO: You mean Dr. Curtis's driveway.

JACK: NO! I....I....You know things are usually very easy for me Jo but right now things are not easy. I don't know.

JO: Would you like to sit down?

JACK: No, no. You know I was talking to someone about Kayla and....do you mind if I talk about Kayla?

JO: No, no. Absolutely not.

JACK: Thanks. Well he suggested that there was possibly a reason why we couldn't find her.

JO: Oh Jack, I'm sure Kayla's alright.

JACK: That's what I was thinking too but it's when I have that feeling that I know she's alright that it adds credence to what this guy was saying that maybe....she doesn't want to be found.

JO: Of course she wants to be found.

JACK: Then why can't I find her? I mean where the hell is she!

Jack/Jo talk about Kayla;
1 Min; 890K

JO: Well I don't know.

JACK:
I mean I know that my family's hard to live with. I grew up with them. I know. I'm used to them. I've even come to love it but maybe.... maybe Kayla.... didn't. I mean maybe we put too much pressure on her....too much too soon.... maybe I started pressuring her in other ways too.

JO: I know that Kayla did not leave because of you. You have been nothing but wonderful and kind to her.

JACK: I've really tried.... I'm just really worried I'm going to lose her....(he starts to cry)

JO: She's going to be fine. You're going to find her. (She attempts to brush his hair smooth but draws back.)

JACK: Thanks Jo. You know I think I just needed to hear that from the person who always found the right pillow in the hospital. Thanks. (He kisses her cheek.)
JACK LEAVES.

SCENE TWO: JACK IS ON THE WHARF WATCHING A VERY DRUNK STEVE SITTING ON A SEAT PLAYING BLUES ON HIS HARMONICA.

JACK: When does the album come out?

STEVE: Jackson! Jackson Junior. Hey dude hey here's to you dude....(He raises a bottle in a toast.)

JACK: You're drunk.

STEVE: Yeh.... you're perceptive....ya think any less o'me?

JACK: No, I don't think this will change my opinion at all.

STEVE: That's good, that's good. Well I know you're into this kind of public service type of stuff but I'm not drivin' okay. My car is parked is parked right near my house near Shenanigan's. The Bluesmobile sittin' there. I ain't drivin'. Is that alright?

JACK: Mind if I join you?

STEVE: No, sure you sit but you can't have any of this cause I don't want you gettin' sick again.

JACK: Right now I don't think that would make much of a difference to me at all.

STEVE: Don't you ever talk like that, you hear me! (He grabs Jack's lapels.) Don't you talk like that! What you gonna do? Get sick and go back to hospital. Ya think that's gonna that's gonna bring Kayla back, uh?

JACK: What is it with you?

STEVE: Stupid....

JACK: You know you've got to be about the weirdest human being on the planet you know that?

STEVE: (Laughing) You want my autograph?

JACK: I'm serious. What does it matter to you if I live or die? I know how you feel about Kayla. If I was out of the picture it'd be great for you. It'd be better.

STEVE: Hey man, no man no. You know the way I look at it, the best man won. That's how I see it.

JACK: I know that Kayla feels more for you than she does for me.

STEVE: Did she say that to you, uh? Did she ever say that to you?

JACK: No she didn't but....

STEVE: No but, but, but. Don't put words in her mouth buddy.

JACK: I need her Steve. I want her back. (He stands up.)

STEVE: Well if she wasn't gonna come back to you, uh, what would you do?

JACK: How am I supposed to answer that Steve?

STEVE: You tell me the truth. You answer from your heart.

JACK: Alright. I suppose I could say I'm going to get over it. It's a good strong image. The press'd love that.

STEVE: There ain't no press here Jack!

Jack/Steve talk about Kayla;
1:25 Mins.; 1.1 Megs.

JACK: That's right. I'm not about to start lying. Kayla made me want to start living again. That's the truth Steve. She made me want to get better and if she doesn't come back, I don't know what I'm going to do.... (frustration) It just isn't the same without her. (pause) I don't hear you laughing.

STEVE: Ain't nuthin' funny. Besides I thought that's what you'd say.

JACK: Why do I get the feeling that you still know something?

STEVE: Wooooow! I can't be responsible for your feelings dude.

JACK: You know one of these days you're not going to be able to shake my detectives.
STEVE LAUGHS.
STEVE: Don't mention them man. Don't mention them detectives. (He falls over.)

JACK:
Wait, wait, come on, come on, here.... (Jack helps Steve to his feet.) Come on we're goin'.

STEVE:
Have you ever seen 'em or do you just talk to 'em on the phone?

JACK: No, that's.... all the time. (Jack laughs at Steve.) Come on you're comin' with me.

STEVE:
Where're we goin'?

JACK:
I'm going to get you home. I mean I'm not going to let you freeze out here. It'd be on my conscience.

STEVE:
Oh conscience ain't gonna do you no good in Washington dude. You betta drop that conscience.

JACK:
I tell you what.

STEVE:
What?

JACK:
I'm going to try and change a few rules in Washington, if that's alright with you?

STEVE:
Fine with me.
THEY WALK OFF WITH THEIR ARMS AROUND EACH OTHER. STEVE PATS JACK ON THE BACK.
STEVE: You've got my vote Jack.
SCENE THREE: JACK, MELISSA AND HARPER ARE BEING SEATED AT A TABLE AT BLONDIES.
HARPER: Jack, Melissa, I'm certainly glad you were able to take a few minutes out of your busy campaign schedule to get a bite to eat.

JACK:
Actually dad I wanted to see you.

HARPER:
Oh.

JACK:
I've got a hunch about Kayla.

HARPER:
Somebody came up with something?

JACK:
Yes. I did. I ran into Steve Johnson down on the pier last night. He was drunk as a skunk.

HARPER:
He mentioned Kayla?

JACK:
No he wasn't that drunk. You see it was more what he actually didn't say. It got me thinking.
CALLIOPE APPROACHES THE TABLE. SHE RUNS OFF THE MENU, ALL THE ITEMS ARE NAMED AFTER THE 1988 PRESIDENTAL CANDIDATES, ALL DONE IN  HOMOROUS SATIRE OF THEIR PERSONALITIES. THEY ALL LAUGH  AND "OH AND AH" AT HER JOKES.

CALLIOPE: When I learned that you were going to be dining with us Senator, I had Jake draw up a list of specials in your honor. For dessert we have a Robert Dole Pineapple Souffle, puffed up with lots of hot air. On the lighter side is the George Bush Whimpy Burger, on a white bread roll served on a very conservative garnish. For starters we're offering the Albert Gore the Ox Tail Soup, and Paul Simon Bow Tie Pasta Salad, sprinkled with lots of Midwestern corn.  And those of you interested in a change of pace, might I recommend The Bruce Babbitt Braised Rabbit. But our best, our absolute best bar none is the Harper Deveraux All-American Prime Choice....

HARPER: Ohhh!

CALLIOPE: (Cont.) ....with Anjelica sauce, which you can guess is not a sweet one, aanndd unlike the policies of the other candidates, all of our food is easy to swallow.

EVERYONE APPLAUDS.

HARPER: Bravo!

CALLIOPE: Thank you!

HARPER KISSES HER HAND.

CALLIOPE: Oh, my.

HARPER: I think you know which one I'm electing.

JACK: Melissa, will we make it unanimous?

MELISSA:
Absolutely.

CALLIOPE:
(To Harper) Well if it's any indication. Your dish is running two to one over the rest of the menu.

HARPER:
Well let's hope the voters in Iowa have similar tastes?

JACK:
Here, here.

CALLIOPE:
(To Jack [Probably an in-joke about being recast in the part.]) Are you parting your hair differently or something?

JACK CHUCKLES AND CALLIOPE LEAVES.
JACK: Look I'm positive that Steve Johnson knows where Kayla is.

HARPER:
Jack. Not that I would put anything past Johnson but you have to be careful that you're not just grabbing at straws.

JACK:
I'm not. Look, listen to this. Johnson was drunk right? But he was a happy drunk and he wouldn't have been happy if he really thought there was something wrong with Kayla.

HARPER:
Jack, The man has said time and time again that he doesn't care about her anymore.

JACK:
And if you believe that, I've got a bridge I want you to buy.

HARPER:
Alright, alright, you're probably right and even if you are we can't get anything on him. He's too slippery. None of our investigators have been able to pin a thing on him.

JACK:
That's right. That's because he doesn't trust anybody. What we really need is someone that he knows, someone that he considers a friend.
HE LOOKS ACROSS AT MELISSA.

SCENE FOUR: AT THE BAR AT BLONDIES.
MELISSA: Jack I know what you're getting at but Steve and I.... we're.... I guess we're friends.

JACK:
Look you're just the person he might let his guard down with too.

MELISSA:
Jack, wait a minute. If you're asking me to spy on Steve then....

JACK:
No, no, no. Not spy. I just thought maybe you could subtly see what he knows, if he knows anything.

MELISSA:
Look if you want me to, I'll ask him straight out.

JACK:
Oh Melissa.

MELISSA:
Jack, I can't sneak around and pry something out of him, I can't. I'm sorry.

JACK:
If you ask him he won't tell you.

MELISSA:
Well what makes you think he's going to tell me anyway even if I try and seek it out of him?

JACK:
Melissa. I know this is asking a lot but it's very important. Kayla was in bad shape when she disappeared from the hospital. Who knows what kind of shape she's going to be in now? We've got to do find her to help her.

MELISSA:
Well, don't you think if Steve knew where she was and knew she needed help he'd bring her back?

JACK:
Melissa, this is my wife we're talking about. Look, you are my only hope of finding her.

HARPER:
Jack's right Melissa. Now Steven Johnson is the type who only trusts a friend. It's just not right that he's keeping her from her family. You hold the key to bringing her back home to her husband.

MELISSA:
Gosh I just don't see why it has to be me.

JACK:
Dad, I said I'd handle this alright.

HARPER:
Hmmm.

JACK:
Melissa, this upsets you. I understand that but if there was any other way I would have done it. Just tell me that you'll consider it, that you'll think about it.

MELISSA:
Would you excuse me for a minute?
SHE WALKS AWAY.
JACK: (To Harper) That didn't go as well as I'd hoped.

HARPER:
We'll find Kayla. I'll stake my life on it.
SCENE FIVE: MELISSA IS COMING OUT OF THE RESTROOM AND HARPER WALKS UP TO HER.
HARPER: Melissa can I talk to you for minute, please?

MELISSA:
Sure. What can I do for you?

HARPER:
Have you thought any more about what Jack asked you to do?

MELISSA:
Yes I have. I'm still not sure.

HARPER:
Well far be it for me to tell you what to do Melissa but I cannot stress enough the importance of this in possibly finding Kayla.

MELISSA:
Senator, that's up to the police, not me.

HARPER:
I understand your reluctance but if you care anything about Jack you'll do this for him. You won't let him down.
THEY WALK BACK TO THE TABLE WHERE JACK IS SITTING
JACK: Melissa. Look I just want to tell you how sorry I am to put this much pressure on you.

MELISSA:
No, no it's okay.
JACK NOTICES LOOKS EXCHANGED BETWEEN MELISSA AND HARPER.
MELISSA: Okay. I'll do it. I want to help you find Kayla.

JACK:
(He hugs her.) Melissa you're wonderful!
SCENE ONE: VICTOR AND DIANA'S ENGAGEMENT PARTY AT BLONDIES JUST BEFORE CHRISTMAS 1987. JACK AND HARPER ARE TALKING TO THEM; EVERYONE IS WEARING EVENING DRESS AND DINNER SUITS.
HARPER: I've been in Iowa trying to convince the people there that they have to elect me in the February caucus.

VICTOR:
As long as it get's you to the White House all's forgiven.
MELISSA ENTERS THE PARTY AND JACK SEES HER.
JACK: Will you excuse me for a minute? And congratulations to both of you.

MELISSA:
Hi!

JACK:
Am I glad to see you. Look did you get a chance to talk to Steve?

MELISSA:
No I haven't been able to find him. No one knows where he is.

JACK:
You'll keep trying?

MELISSA:
Tonight?

JACK:
Okay, tomorrow.

MELISSA:
I'll get on it first thing tomorrow morning I promise....Well we have a few hours to kill before morning. Want to dance?

JACK:
Er, okay.
JACK AND MELISSA DANCE TO UNCHAINED MELODY. JACK BREAKS THE DANCE AFTER A FEW BARS AND APPROACHES HARPER.
JACK: Okay Dad.

HARPER:
(To Melissa) Did you get chance to talk to Steve?

MELISSA:
No. I haven't been able to find him.

JACK:
If Steve Johnson had anything to do with Kayla, I'm going to make him sorry for the day he was born.
SCENE TWO: STEVE TALKS TO KAYLA AND SHE WANTS TO LEAVE AND GO AWAY WITH HIM. HE SAYS HE CANNOT GO AND SHE ASKS HIM WHY HE ALWAYS PUSHES HER BACK TO JACK AND HE EVENTUALLY TELLS HER THAT JACK IS HIS BROTHER.

SCENE THREE: JACK AND MELISSA ARE AT UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL. THEY OVERHEAR THE MAD GUY THAT HAD KIDNAPPED KAYLA TALKING TO MARCUS.
MAD GUY: I can't help thinking about that pretty lady with the blonde hair.

MARCUS:
Ssshh. Keep it down.

MAD GUY:
I'm sorry. I know it's supposed to be a secret but is she okay.

MARCUS:
Yes she's doing fine.

MAD GUY:
