4:40 min; 10.2 Meg
JACK: Kayla.

SCENE ONE: JACK PICKS UP THE ROSE. HE DOES NOT LOOK AT HER BUT AT THE ROSE IN HIS HAND.

JACK: There's not much point in trying to make you understand how it's been.... The day we were married I was the happiest man alive. It's like....it's like I found this part of myself, deep down inside that I thought I'd lost. I couldn't wait to be with you, to share it, to show you I wasn't half a man, that I could make love in every sense of the word.... I had this doubt....you have them....when it's been like....like I have these doubts, that make you feel.... I guess it doesn't matter anymore does it? I already proved what I could do alright!.... I never intended it for it to be this way but there's a reason and no matter how mad you are at this moment Kayla I hope that you can see that it's not all my fault. I tried to make our marriage work. I believed you when you gave me all those excuses why we couldn't make love. Every single time I believed you because I loved you and then I'd go on telling myself.... no convincing myself that I'm being noble waiting for the woman I love when ALL THE TIME YOU ARE SLEEPING WITH HIM BEHIND MY BACK! I never thought I'd be capable of this but if you'd loved me honestly the way that I'd loved you, it never would have happened.

KAYLA: You're.... you're saying it's my fault that you raped me!

JACK: Rape! Dammit this is not rape. You are my wife!

KAYLA: That doesn't make a difference.

JACK: OH DOESN'T IT! WHAT DOES? THAT YOU GO OUT AND SLEEP WITH HIM BEHIND MY BACK LIKE SOME CHEAP WHORE. DOES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

KAYLA: Stop it! Just stop it.... Married or not, if a man forces a woman to have sex with him, it's rape! And that Jack Deveraux is what you did! You raped me and you are going to have to live with that for the rest of your life!

JACK: That's right I will! Just like you're going have to live with all the lies that you and Johnson fed me that led up to it. I am not the only one to blame here and I'm not going to let you pretend that I am. We took vows Kayla, you and I, and you led me on, DAY AFTER DAY, INTO THINKING YOUR WERE FAITHFUL, INTO THINKING THAT OUR MARRIAGE WAS WORKING, INTO THINKING THAT ONE DAY YOU WERE GOING TO MAKE LOVE TO ME.

KAYLA: Stop it. I saved your life! Isn't that enough?

JACK: NO IT'S NOT!

KAYLA: I married you because I thought it would give you a reason to live and it did! I never intended to hurt you.

JACK: WELL I NEVER INTENDED TO RAPE MY WIFE EITHER!

KAYLA: I'm getting out of here.

JACK: Kayla!

KAYLA: I stayed with you because I thought it would help you but I don't want to help you anymore. (She tries to leave.)

JACK: Kayla please!

KAYLA: Let go of me. Don't you EVER touch me again.

JACK: Kayla! KAYLA! KAYLA! (She runs upstairs.)
JACK CRUSHES THE GOLD ROSE HE WAS HOLDING.

SCENE THREE: KAYLA IS IN THE BEDROOM AFTER HAVING A SHOWER. JACK IS OUTSIDE THE DOOR.

JACK: Kayla answer me please!....I'm sorry.

SCENE FOUR: THE SAME NIGHT. JACK IS LOOKING AT THE PICTURES AS KAYLA COMES DOWNSTAIRS DRESSED.
JACK: Look Kayla, I think we better talk.

KAYLA: Nope!

JACK: Kayla, please....

KAYLA: Jack I can't even look at you right now.

JACK: Where do you think you're going?

KAYLA: To see Steve!

JACK: No you're not. NOT NOW, NOT TONIGHT, NOT EVER. (He grabs her sleeve.)

KAYLA: I am warning you....if you ever touch me again....Now I'm going out that door and you're not going to stop me.

JACK: (Controlled anger) If you go out that door, I will make you sorrier than you have ever been in your life, both of you!

KAYLA: Oh is that a threat?

JACK: Don't go out that door Kayla!
SHE WALKS OUT THE DOOR. JACK IMMEDIATELY PICKS UP THE PHONE AND DIALS.
JACK: Yeh, yeh, I want to talk to Victor Kiriakis.
WHILE HE IS WAITING FOR VICTOR TO COME TO THE PHONE, HE SEES A WEDDING PICTURE OF HIM AND KAYLA. THE GLASS IS CRACKED AND HE THROWS IT ACROSS THE ROOM.

SCENE FIVE: JACK OPENS THE LOFT DOOR AND CANBY WALKS IN.
CANBY: Good evening!

JACK: What do you think you're doing here?

CANBY: Well I just happened to see your wife wandering down on the pier by her lonesome and I thought this might be a good opportunity for you and I to talk a little business.

JACK: We don't have any business.

CANBY: I want some money Assemblyman Deveraux. A nice tidy amount too.

JACK: Why would I give you money?

CANBY: For forgetting how to develop pictures.

JACK: YOU....
JACK GRABS CANBY BY THE COLLAR.
CANBY: I still have the negatives, so unless you want to see your wife and her lover in every paper in this big old country tomorrow....(Jack turns away in frustration)....no I didn't think so, especially now that you've been elected and your father's campaign for the Presidency is just underway. Oh by the way, I need an answer.

JACK: (Angry and dangerous, and unbalanced.) Alright, you'll get your money.

JACK: I don't know what you're talking about!

KAYLA: Yes you do. I'm going to be with Steve and there is nothing you can do to stop me. And if you try, I will do everything, EVERYTHING, I can to make you pay for what you've done.

JACK: (Smiling and snarky) Maybe we should discuss this at home.

KAYLA: We don't have a home Jack, not together. Not now, forever.

JACK: Kayla!

KAYLA: No. I am not going back there with you. In fact I want you to move out of my apartment, tonight!

JACK: Kayla, people are watching.

KAYLA: I don't care. I want you out of my apartment.

JACK: Well I can't force you to come home to me but.... I won't move out either.

KAYLA: Fine. Stay at the loft if you want. I'm going to move to my folks. There's nothing you can do to stop that and as far as publicity goes, and scandal and appearances....cope with it Jack. We all have to cope. Excuse me.

KAYLA: I didn't disappear Jack.

JACK: Been gone all day. Didn't call me. Should have told me you were bringing company home.

STEVE: This isn't a social call Jack.

JACK: No?

STEVE: I guess there's no other way to do this but fast and clean.

JACK: What are we talking about?

STEVE: I got something to say to you.

JACK: I'm listening!

STEVE: When you and Kayla got married you weren't exactly head over heels in love.

JACK: Now wait a minute....

STEVE: Now maybe you were but Kayla wasn't.

JACK: YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COME IN HERE AND START TELLING ME HOW MY WIFE FEELS.

STEVE: I do have a right. I have a right.

JACK: WELL I DON'T HAVE TO LISTEN TO YOU. DO YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?

STEVE: You do have to listen to it....You have to listen. Now Kayla cared about you but she never really loved you the way she should love the man she gonna marry. She tried Jack. She tried her damndest but it didn't work out and it was never going to work out.

JACK: That's not true, that's not ....

STEVE: It is true, you know it's true because you two never really had a marriage. You and Kayla were never together as man and wife.

JACK: I don't see how that is any of your business.

STEVE: It's my business Jack because I'm the reason the two of you never got together. Kayla loved me and she still does love me. And I love her. So the bottom line is Jack, you are gonna have to give up Kayla. She wants a divorce.

JACK: Is it alright with you if I have a moment alone with.... (Snide) my wife?
SCENE FOUR: JACK HAS JUST ASKED TO TALK TO KAYLA, ALONE.

KAYLA: So what did you want to say to me?

JACK: You didn't tell him?

KAYLA: No.

JACK: Why not?

KAYLA: I will.

JACK: Let me suggest something to you. DON'T!

KAYLA: I am going to tell Steve everything!

JACK: I'll advise you not to do that. Let me give you another little suggestion. Forget about this divorce!

KAYLA: I don't remember asking you for your advice or your suggestions. And your threats aren't going to work. Steve and me are going to be together and there is nothing you can do about it.

JACK: Suit yourself! Just remember .... I WARNED YOU!

KAYLA: Anything else?

JACK: No. I think that's plenty.

KAYLA: I'm.... I'm going.
JACK WALKS AHEAD OF HER AND BLOCKS THE DOOR ENJOYING EVERY MINUTE.

KAYLA: Let me go Jack.

JACK: Look, I'll even open the door for you.
SHE TRIES TO WALK OUT.

MELISSA: Thanks!

JACK: So, thank you for your good wishes.

MELISSA: You're welcome.
MELISSA LEAVES AND JACK IS LEFT A LITTLE SHAKEN.
HARPER: Jack I don't like to criticize but do you think it's such a good idea having warm little conversations with the woman accused of trying to kill your wife? I mean what if a reporter saw you or worse a photographer?

ANJELICA: Sweetheart, where is Kayla? I thought she was supposed to join us here.

JACK: She'll be here any minute. I know she will.

CAROLINE: He knows that I'm here.

KAYLA: Well tell him I'm taking a nap or something.

CAROLINE: Why don't you talk to him yourself Kayla?

JACK: Mrs. Brady I have to talk to her. Please, it's very important!

KAYLA: Mom, I just can't handle it right now. Just tell him something.
KAYLA RUNS UPSTAIRS AND CAROLINE GOES TO ANSWER THE DOOR.
CAROLINE: I'm sorry Jack that it took so long. I was right in the middle of something.

JACK: I understand....so where's Kayla?

CAROLINE: Oh well I'm afraid you can't see her right now.

JACK: Why not?

CAROLINE: Oh she's taking a nap.

JACK: Would you please wake her up for me?

CAROLINE: Well I'd rather not do that. She didn't sleep at all last night and I'm afraid if she doesn't get her rest then she might have a relapse again....

JACK: Mrs. Brady, I hope you're not just putting me on because of what happened between me and Kayla.

CAROLINE: Oh no, I wouldn't do that. The fact that you and Kayla are separated I wouldn't think any less of you Jack.

JACK: I'm glad to hear that.

CAROLINE: But I won't wake up Kayla. You'll just have to wait until another time.

JACK: I understand....So you could you just tell her that I came by....And er ask her to call me when she feels like it. We really need to talk. (He walks to the door.) And tell her one more thing that....IN SPITE OF WHAT'S HAPPENED I STILL LOVE HER.
