Episode Forty-four:
Harper Is Shot and Kayla Is
Kidnapped to Care for his Wound.

SCENE ONE: EVERYONE IS STILL AT BLONDIE'S.

JACK: Well, Victor, you've thought of everything. I just hope that everything works.

VICTOR: Oh, everything's going according to plan. Your father should be out of prison and on his way to Switzerland before you can.... well look who's here.
ANJELICA COMES HURRYING IN.
ANJELICA: Sweetheart.... your father's escaped from prison.

JACK: No. (Beat) Anjelica are sure?

VICTOR: How could that be?

ANJELICA: I heard it on the news.

JACK: How could Harper do something so dangerous? I mean he must know what kind of danger this puts him in.

VICTOR: I'm afraid desperate men often seek desperate solutions although it was a foolish thing to try.

ANJELICA: Sweetheart I came to find you as soon as I heard.

JACK: Thank you, thank you, that's really sweet of you.

ANJELICA: I know you love your father but I certainly hope he gets caught soon. He's a dangerous man and he belongs in jail. He could be trouble for all of us.

JACK: Anjelica, I don't....

VICTOR: If you'll excuse me, I'm sure you two would rather be alone at a time like this. Jack, we'll finish our business later.

JACK: Of course, of course.

VICTOR: I hope everything turns out for the best.

JACK: Thank you.

ANJELICA: The question is, who helped him?

JACK: What do you mean?

ANJELICA: Well, there's no way Harper could pull this off by himself. Someone on the outside had to help him. And boy do I wonder who.
JACK LEAVES TO GET HIS COAT AND AS HE RETURNS HE SEES JO STANDING NEXT TO ANJELICA. JO GIVES JACK A DISGUSTED LOOK AND THEN LEAVES.
ANJELICA: Well, thanks heavens for small favors. The last thing I need is a little tĄte-š-tĄte with Josephine Johnson.

JACK: Look, Anjelica, I can see how upset you are. One thing I don't understand is....why do you care so much about what happens with Harper. I mean it's obvious that you don't care about him. Why do you care.... care what happens while he escapes?

ANJELICA: Jack....

JACK: Anjelica, if you're worried about him being dangerous just forget about it. He's not going to come after you. I don't think he would try to come after you.

ANJELICA: Jack, it's not Harper. It's the money. Look Jack I know you don't want to hear this but when your father and I got married we made an agreement. I would take care of him, his houses, his campaign, his friends....

JACK: Me?

ANJELICA: No, Jack. That was something I wanted to do. And in exchange I would be taken care of. We made a little investment in each other. Now I need that money to raise my child. If Harper is allowed to get away with this escape he could take that money. My child's whole future could be in jeopardy.

JACK: Look, you don't have anything to worry about. I am going to take care of you and your baby.

ANJELICA: Oh, Honey, that's not your responsibility.

JACK: I don't care whether it is or isn't. You and your baby are going to want for nothing.

ANJELICA: I want to take care of myself and I want to do it with the money from my marriage and I will if Harper doesn't get his hands on it first.

JACK: I'll tell you what I'm going to do. I'll take you home and then I'm going to go right over to the police station and see what's happening.

ANJELICA: Good.

JACK: Alright? I'll be right out.
JACK LEAVES MONEY ON THE TABLE AND LEAVES LOOKING VERY WORRIED.


SCENE TWO: BACK AT VICTOR'S, JACK AND VICTOR ARE RAISING THEIR GLASSES IN A TOAST.

JACK: To you Victor.

VICTOR: To success.

JACK: Alright, to success. You said you could pull it off and you did. Like clockwork.

VICTOR: In a matter of minutes Harper will be on a plane on his way to Switzerland where he'll be able to redeem his Swiss account and live happily for the rest of his days.

JACK: And I'll never see him again.

VICTOR: Ah, Anjelica is the one I'm worried about. She's bound to be disappointed when she finally tracks down Harper's accounts and finds them all empty. I mean she was counting on that money to support herself and the child of course.

JACK: I'll take care of Anjelica.
THE PHONE RINGS.
VICTOR: Yes. What's happening?

THUG: It didn't go like we planned.

VICTOR: What happened?

THUG: Some guy with a patch over his eye. He was on our trail and he shot Deveraux.

VICTOR: How bad is he?

JACK: What.... what.... has Harper been hurt?

THUG: He's bleedin' really bad. We got to get him to some kind of doctor or something and the cops are on our trail. What do you want us to do?

VICTOR: Just don't panic. First thing you want to do is ditch the limo just as we planned, in the river. Pick up another car, find a place to hide.

THUG: Yeah, yeah but then what?

VICTOR: Find a place to hide and then call me. And I'll arrange for our friend to be treated and for a way to get him out of the country. Now you handle this well on your end and there will be a bonus in it for you. One more stupid mistake and you know what's going to happen. (Beat) Harper's been shot but he's still alive.

JACK: What do you mean, still alive? How is he.... oh forget about that. Where is he? I'm going to him.

VICTOR: You can't go anywhere near him.

JACK: The man needs my help. I'm going to him.

VICTOR: Jack, you're no good to him if you are in prison. Whatever happens to him from now on, you and I cannot be connected with this in anyway.

JACK: Victor, I'm going to see my father.

VICTOR: Jack, go home. I'll call you if there's any change. Look I know you're upset but there is nothing you can do. Trust me, I'll handle everything.


SCENE THREE: VICTOR'S MEN FIND AN ABANDONED CABIN AND TAKE HARPER INSIDE. EMILIO TRIES TO ESCAPE BUT THEY STOP HIM.


SCENE FOUR: JACK ARRIVES HOME TO FIND JO WAITING FOR HIM.
JACK: Jo.... Mrs. Johnson.

JO: Jack.

JACK: What are you doing here? Do you know what time it is?

JO: Yes, I've been waiting for you. I have to talk to you.

JACK: Not now, I'll talk to you tomorrow.

JO: I know what's going on. (Beat) I'm not going to tell anybody. I love you son but you're making a terrible, terrible mistake.

JACK: I.... don't know what you're talking about.

JO: I know about your plan with Victor Kiriakis. I know that you think you owe Harper because he raised you but would you think just for a minute of all the people that he has hurt. The women, the families, he even tried to murder Kayla and you....

JACK: (Angry and a little scarey) So help me, if I find out that your meddling got Steve involved in this, and Steve hurt him I'll....

JO: You'll what? You'll do what?

JACK: You don't want to know what I'll do.

JO: You listen to me young man! Your brother has done more for you than you can ever possibly imagine....
ANJELICA OPENS THE FRONT DOOR.
ANJELICA: What on earth is going on out here?

JO: I am trying to talk to my son, if you don't mind.

ANJELICA: Oh well, excuse me Mrs. Johnson but I do mind.

JACK: Look Anjelica, Mrs. Johnson and I are finished our business. Goodnight Mrs. Johnson.

JO: Jack, please?

ANJELICA: I want to thank you for upsetting him Mrs. Johnson. Now will you leave us alone? Come on Jack.


SCENE FIVE: STEVE AND ABE LOCATE THE CABIN AND DECIDE TO BREAK IN. VICTOR'S MEN SEND EMILIO TO THE DOOR TO GET RID OF THEM. EMILIO SAYS HE COMES THERE A LOT TO THINK NOW THAT HIS MOTHER IS SO ILL. THEY LOOK THROUGH THE CABIN BUT FIND NOBODY.


[Air date 10-21-88]
SCENE ONE: VICTOR'S MEN HAVE ESCAPED FROM THE CABIN AND TAKEN HARPER TO THE PLANE READY TO FLY TO SWITZERLAND. HOWEVER HE IS BADLY INJURED AND THEY NEED MEDICAL HELP FIRST. JACK ARRIVES TO SEE HARPER AND IS GRABBED BY ONE OF THE THUGS.
JACK: Whoa, wait a minute, wait a minute. I'm Harper Deveraux' son. Look I got ID. What do you want?

THUG: Yeah, yeah. Why are you doing here?

JACK: I'm here to check on my dad. What do you think I wanted?

THUG: How did you know we were here?

JACK: Your boss keeps me very well informed.

THUG: Yeah, what boss would that be?

JACK: Victor Kiriakis. If you don't back off right now and let me check on my dad, that's who you're going to have to answer to.

THUG: He's over there.

JACK: Thank you very much. (Beat) Dad, it's Jack. Dad? Did you guys send for a doctor?

THUG: The boss said we should get him out of here right away.

JACK: Well I don't think that the boss understand how serious this is. This man needs a doctor. Dad, dad, can you hear me? This man needs a doctor.

THUG: What do you want me to do about? I don't know with no doctor.

JACK: I don't care. I just want you to get one, you hear me?

THUG: Look man if I go get us a doctor we're all gonna get busted and the boss said we should get out of here.

JACK: I don't care. The only thing the boss wants is for him to live and if you don't get him a doctor right now he's not going to live.

THUG: Hey you tell me how to do it alright? If I go get us a doctor and he comes back here, we're all going to get arrested.

JACK: Victor Kiriakis didn't hire a bunch of idiots to do this job. I'm sure you'll come up with something.

THUG: Idiots uh? (Beat) Alright, alright, alright. I've got an idea. Listen to me! (Beat) Now listen I got an idea but you're going to have to stay out of sight. Ya got that. I'm going to talk to my partner. Now be cool.


SCENE TWO: THE THUGS ARRANGE TO SEND EMILIO TO GET A DOCTOR AND THEY THREATEN TO KILL HIS FAMILY IF HE DISOBEYS.


SCENE THREE: ABE SUSPECTS JACK BUT STEVE SAYS THIS IS TOO BIG FOR JACK BUT ABE DECIDES TO CHECK JACK OUT ANYWAY.


SCENE FOUR: KAYLA IS WORKING AT THE EMERGENCY CENTER WHEN EMILIO GOES IN. HE ASKS FOR A DOCTOR BUT THERE IS NO DOCTOR THERE. THE THUG INSISTS THEY GET KAYLA INSTEAD. EMILIO ASKS KAYLA TO GO WITH HIM BUT DROPS A MATCHBOX COVER ON THE FLOOR AS A HINT TO STEVE.


SCENE FIVE: EMILIO BRINGS KAYLA BACK TO THE PLANE. SHE SEES HARPER AND REFUSES TO TREAT HIM. MEANWHILE JACK IS HIDING IN THE COCKPIT.
JACK: Who is that? What's going on? I can't hear a thing.

PILOT: It's all yours. (He hands Jack a headset.)

JACK: Kayla.... Kayla.


SCENE SIX: STEVE GOES TO THE EMERGENCY CENTER WITH JO TO LOOK FOR KAYLA.


SCENE SEVEN: STEVE REALIZES THAT JO KNOWS A LOT MORE THAN SHE IS SAYING AND EVENTUALLY SHE ADMITS SHE HEARD JACK TALKING TO VICTOR. STEVE TELLS JO OFF BUT SHE SAID SHE COULD NOT TELL HIM BEFORE BECAUSE JACK IS HER SON AND SHE LOVES HIM NO MATTER WHAT.

SCENE ONE: BACK ON THE PLANE.
JACK: Why did you get Kayla? You were supposed to bring a doctor.

THUG: There wasn't a doctor there.

JACK: Well, did you try the hospital?

THUG: Man, I don't know what your problem is. We're a little pressed for time here.

THUG 2: He's right. We should have been out here an hour ago.

THUG: Yeah, the cops will be on us any second.

JACK: Alright, okay, okay. This is what I want you to do. Go to Kayla and tell her to do anything she can to stabilize my father. Don't mention that it's my father and don't mention that I'm here, alright. Just tell her.... tell to do anything she can to stabilize him so he can travel.
THE THUG TELLS KAYLA SHE HAS TO WORK ON HARPER OR HE WILL KILL EMILIO.
THUG: Come on. You gonna fix him up or what?

KAYLA: I said no.

JACK: He's scarin' her. Doesn't he see that? Why is he roughing her up?

THUG: It's because she's not co-operating. You want her to fix your old man or not?

JACK: I want him to live.
SCENE TWO: BACK IN THE CABIN OF THE PLANE, KAYLA REMOVES THE BULLET FROM HARPER AS JACK WATCHES OF THE CLOSED CIRCUIT CAMERA.
JACK: Thank you, Kayla.

THUG: What?

JACK: Ah.... nothing. Um.... let's get down to the business of getting him out of here.

THUG: Not yet. (Draws his gun.)

JACK: What are you doing?

THUG: We got to take care of the kid and the nurse.

JACK: Define take care of.

THUG: We have to kill them.

JACK: No, no, you're not going to kill anybody.

THUG: We have to.

SCENE ONE: STEVE AND MARCUS ARRIVE AT THE AIRPORT AND MANAGE TO BOARD THE PLANE BY DISGUISING THEMSELVES AS MAINTENANCE MEN.

SCENE TWO: MEANWHILE JACK IS STILL WATCHING KAYLA.
JACK: Look, your men have been contracted to get my father out of the country. That's all they need to concern themselves with.

THUG: I keep telling you man, we don't need witnesses.

JACK: I cannot just sit here and let you kill two innocent people.

THUG: Well then don't watch.

JACK: Listen to me.

THUG: You listen. I don't take orders from you Deveraux. Ramirez and the girl are going to die and the sooner you realize that the better, alright. There's nothing you can do about it.

JACK: Look, I don't think you understand the consequences of the plans that you're making.

THUG: There aren't going to be any, as soon as I put these two through the witness elimination program.

JACK: But you don't have to worry about witnesses. You're taking.... you're leaving the country. Once you take off the police can't touch you.

THUG: If they get a description of us and they're going to give it to every newspaper and cop in the world.

JACK: No. (Beat) Alright, look, I don't care about Ramirez. You do whatever you want with him but not Kayla. Give me Kayla. I will take her with me. I will take full responsibility for the whole thing.

THUG: Can't help you.

JACK: I'm not going to let you kill her.

THUG: Let me say this one more time. We're being paid to get your old man to Switzerland and that's what we're going to do and anyone who gets in our way, we're going to get rid of. Get it?
SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE JENNIFER HAS RECEIVED A LETTER FROM FRANKIE TO SAY THAT HE IS NOT COMING HOME FOR THANKSGIVING BECAUSE HE IS TOO BUSY. ALICE TELLS HER SHE HAS TO MOVE ON WITH HER LIFE AND CAREER.

SCENE FOUR: AIRPLANE CONTINUED.
THUG: Alright, it's pitch dark out. No one's going to see you leave now.

JACK: When are you going to take off?

THUG: Probably before you hit the parking lot.

JACK: Well, that's.... that's good. We've already wasted enough time. Look I want you to promise me one thing. I want you to get my father to Switzerland safely.

THUG: That's what I'm getting paid for.

JACK: I know, I know that. It's just that after everything that's happened you can hardly blame me for my concern.

THUG: Well don't worry about it. It's going to be an easy flight once we get rid of the excess baggage somewhere over the Atlantic. (Points his gun at Jack.) Goodbye Deveraux.
SCENE FIVE: MEANWHILE MELISSA GOES TO SEE JENNIFER ABOUT HER WEDDING.
MELISSA: I won't stay long I promise.

JENNIFER: No, come on. You've been so busy we've hardly had a chance to talk. I want to hear all about the wedding plans.

MELISSA: Jen, you don't have to pretend with me. Granma told me all about the letter from Frankie. I can tell you're upset.

JENNIFER: I guess I can't fool anyone anymore.

MELISSA: You miss him a lot don't you?

JENNIFER: Two weeks ago if someone had've told me that Frankie and I wouldn't be seeing each other for months and months, I would have said they were crazy.

MELISSA: Jennifer

JENNIFER: I mean if anything I thought I might be talking about my own wedding. I guess that I'm just really jealous, that's all.

MELISSA: Jen I'm sorry if all this talk about my wedding's been hard on you.

JENNIFER: No, no. This should be a very happy time for you. I don't want you to feel you can't talk about your wedding around me. I want to hear all about it. I want to hear the plans, everything.

MELISSA: Well actually I wanted to ask you something.

JENNIFER: What?

MELISSA: If you wanted to be a bridesmaid? I mean if you don't want to, I understand.

JENNIFER: Melissa, I would love to be in your wedding.

SCENE SIX: STEVE AND MARCUS BOARD THE PLANE AS MAINTENANCE INSPECTORS. THEY MANAGE TO OVERTAKE THE THUGS MINDING HARPER AND HE IS RECAPTURED AND SENT BACK TO JAIL. EMILIO HELPS THEM AND IS LET OFF.
