"Impeccable,Two Cs and no K": There
Is Power Failure, Jack and Jennifer
Have to Work Close Together, in the Dark;
Kayla Is Found Guilty of Marina's Murder.

(Air date early March 1990)

SCENE ONE: EMILIO AND MELISSA HAVE FORMED A SINGING PARTNERSHIP. THEY ARE WAITING AT JENNIFER'S DESK TO TAKE HER TO THEIR OPENING NIGHT.

MELISSA: Come on, let's get out of here. The names on the doors give me the willies.

JENNIFER: Was that necessary Melissa? I don't think so.

JACK: Jennifer, I....

JENNIFER: Jack, it's in the computer, goodnight!

JACK: No, no. I don't need the computer, I need you. This will just take a minute. Excuse me.

HE WHISKS JENNIFER INTO HIS OFFICE.

JACK: Look, this is very important, alright.

JENNIFER: It's always important.

JACK: Jennifer....

JACK RUNS HIS HAND THROUGH HIS HAIR AND SEEMS AFRAID TO SPEAK.

JENNIFER: Jack, what is it? What's wrong?

JACK: Ah....I don't know how to tell you this, you see....or better yet I don't know how to ask you....what can I say. It's personal.

JENNIFER: Jack, whatever this personal thing is, whatever you want to tell me....

JACK: Alright, you see, Kayla is in this....

JENNIFER: It's about Kayla?

JACK: Kayla, yeah. You see the verdict is going to come out on Kayla any minute now and we've got to be ready for it. And the only people I can trust on this story is me because I'm me and you because you'll do what I....you know. Okay!

JENNIFER: Sure.

JACK: Good, good. So we have to be ready for this thing. The important, the real challenge here is not to focus on the negative and go for the easy headline.

JENNIFER: No, I understand. And I'm glad that you felt you wanted to ask me. I know how much Steve and Kayla mean to you.

JACK: Yeah, well anyway, the point is that when the verdict comes down we have to be ready to roll with this whole thing so we've got to start working right now so we've got to cancel all of our plans, okay.

JENNIFER: Ah....

JACK: Is there a problem?

JENNIFER: No, I was supposed to go to Wings tonight for Emilio and Melissa's opening.

JACK: Well, if you've got to do what you have to do....

JENNIFER: (Interrupting him) No, it's okay. I mean I can go late, I mean if you really want me to. I mean if you really need me.

JENNIFER GOES OUT AND TELLS EMILIO AND MELISSA THAT SHE WILL HAVE TO MEET THEM LATER.

SCENE TWO: SHE TAKES OFF HER COAT AND THROWS IT AT JACK WHO NOTICES THAT UNDERNEATH SHE IS WEARING A CUTE LITTLE RED COCKTAIL DRESS.

JENNIFER: Like I said, I'll see you later. Break a leg and save me a seat okay. Come on Jack, let's get busy.

SHE WALKS INTO HIS OFFICE.

JACK: Yeah, break a....break a vocal chord.

EMILIO LEAVES AND MELISSA STAYS TO TALK TO JACK.

MELISSA: I know what you're up to Jack and I'm warning you right now.

JACK: Excuse me?

MELISSA: Just remember I'm back. You don't want to hurt Jennifer the same way you hurt me.

MELISSA LEAVES. JACK IS AFFECTED BY HER WORDS, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IT REINFORCES HIS BELIEFS THAT HE IS NOT WORTHY OF JENNIFER, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE IS DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH HER. JACK GOES INTO HIS OFFICE TO WORK WITH JENNIFER.

SCENE THREE: IT S A SHORT TIME LATER AND JACK IS SITTING WHILE JENNIFER IS STANDING UP TAKING NOTES.

JACK: The point is, Kayla has put out so much for this town, isn't it >about time she got a little compensation?

JENNIFER: Sounds more like an editorial to me Jack.

JACK GETS UP.
oldEp117A
JACK: Well alright, then this is the editorial part. I mean is justice and truth and the American way a part of this town? Is it the responsibility of this town or is it this immutable, monolithic kind of heartless kind of thing.... did....

JENNIFER: You really care what happens to Kayla, don't you?

JACK: Yeah, I guess I do.

JENNIFER: Jack, Jack I understand.

SUDDENLY ALL THE LIGHTS GO OUT AND IN FRIGHT SHE LEAPS INTO HIS ARMS.

JACK: Ooooh! Wait a minute! Je....ah....the air's a little close in here don't you think?

HE IS HOLDING HER AGAINST HIM AND SHE HAS HER ARMS WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK. JENNIFER SEEMS COMFORTABLE IN HIS ARMS, JACK SEEMS TO ENJOY IT TOO.

JENNIFER: I get a little nervous in the dark, ever since I was a little kid.

JACK: Yeah! Well....er....you don't feel like a little kid anymore.

JENNIFER: Oh, it's nice of you to notice.

JACK: Heh! Well you know in the dark, some senses sharpen.

HE CONTINUES TO HOLD HER. BUT FINALLY SETS HER DOWN.

JENNIFER: I'm going to go in the office and I'm going to get a candle.

JACK: Good! Good move. I'll stay here and hold down the fort. Just watch out for the....

JUST AS HE IS ABOUT TO FINISH THE SENTENCE SHE WALKS STRAIGHT INTO THE DOOR.

JENNIFER: OUCH!

JENNIFER CLOSES THE DOOR. JACK STOPS AND THINKS, AND DECIDES TO FOLLOW HER.

JACK: ....door! I'll just stay here and....er....no maybe I better make sure you're okay in there. I'll just....

JACK WALKS INTO THE DOOR AS WELL.

JACK (CONT.): ....OUCH! OUCH!

JENNIFER: Jack, are you okay?

JACK: Yeah, thank you for leaving the door open.

JENNIFER: Sorry.

JACK: All I need to do is find a....

JENNIFER DOES NOT REALIZE THAT JACK HAS FOLLOWED HER OUT. JACK CANNOT SEE JENNIFER BENDING OVER HER DESK BECAUSE IT IS PITCH BLACK. HE BUMPS INTO HER.

JENNIFER: OOOOOOOH!

JACK: Is that you?

JENNIFER: Is that you?

JACK: HEH! Yeah! Here.

JENNIFER: I've got it.

JACK: Why are we whispering?

JENNIFER: I don't know. Because it's dark.

JACK: Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness I always say.

JACK LIGHTS THE CANDLE JENNIFER IS HOLDING.

JENNIFER: I always thought you'd be the type to like it in the dark.

JACK: Heh! Under some circumstances, maybe.

JENNIFER: Oh Jack.

HE IS FEELING UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT THE WHOLE SITUATION. BUT IT IS ALSO OBVIOUS THAT HE IS ATTRACTED TO THE SITUATION.

JACK: Look when the power comes back on, you ask me again and I'll tell you all about being good in the dark.

JENNIFER: What if I don't want to wait till then?

JACK: Some things are better with the lights on.

JENNIFER: I've heard that too.

JACK IS NERVOUS ABOUT THE DOUBLE MEANING OF WHAT HE JUST SAID.

JACK: Heh, heh!

JENNIFER: So tell me Jack, I mean considering how things are at the moment, and not knowing when the power's coming back on, we could be stuck here all night.

JACK: We....well....

JENNIFER: You know the elevators, the doors won't be working and the garage gates will be locked shut.

JACK: That's true.

JENNIFER: So what do we do till then?

JACK: Um....I think, I think we should do what our grandmothers and our grandfathers and great grandmothers and grandfathers did before in the dark, I mean in a similar situation. We should....ah....we should....we should.....we should get busy. I mean we should work. We should try to work.

AGAIN JACK REALIZES THAT WHAT HE JUST SAID HAS A DOUBLE MEANING. HE IS UNCOMFORTABLE ABOUT THEIR CLOSENESS AND WHAT COULD HAPPEN. ALSO IT IS EVIDENT THAT HE ENJOYS THE SITUATION, BUT BECAUSE OF HIS FEELINGS OF HIS NEGATIVE SELF-WORTH, BECAUSE OF HIS PAST, AND WHAT MELISSA JUST TOLD HIM, HE FIGHTS HIS FEELINGS.

SCENE FOUR: AT WINGS THE POWER IS OUT AS WELL. EMILIO IS NERVOUSLY WAITING FOR JENNIFER. MELISSA TRIES TO REASSURE HIM THAT SHE WILL ARRIVE.

SCENE FIVE: IT IS A SHORT TIME LATER AND JACK AND JENNIFER ARE WORKING BY CANDLELIGHT. JENNIFER ISWRITING AS JACK DICTATES.

JACK: Alright, alright, where was I?

JENNIFER: We're on the fourth synonym in a row for the word "innocent."
oldEp117B

JACK:
Ah...."blameless," "faultless," "irreproachable"....

JENNIFER: You're sure you're not overdoing this, right Jack.

JACK: What are you talking about? I'm just getting warmed up here.

JENNIFER: I think you feel responsible for all the bad things that have happened to Steve and Kayla and I feel like you're trying to make it up to them.

JACK IS SELF-CONSCIOUS THAT JENNIFER HIT ON THE TRUTH. SO PULLS A JACK AND PRETENDS IT IS NOT SO.

JACK: What are you talking about? That's not me! I live to cause problems for every poor soul that crosses my path. That's a Deveraux family tradition.

JENNIFER KNOWS THAT IT IS TRUE, AND KNOWS THAT JACK IS A SPECIAL, AND CARING PERSON, DESPITE WHAT HE SAYS.

JENNIFER: Right! Not everyone believes that Jack.

JACK: Well then all those people deserve what they have coming to them.

JENNIFER: And what is that?

JENNIFER IS PARTIALLY REFERRING TO HERSELF. JACK GETTING MORE UNCOMFORTABLE BY THEIR OBVIOUS CLOSENESS AND THE DIRECTION JENNIFER IS GOING WITH HER REMARKS TRIES TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT.

JACK: (Changing the subject) "Blameless," "faultless", "irreproachable." Um...."impeccable."

JENNIFER: "Impeccable." Spell it for me. I-M....

JACK: No, no Ks, two Cs.

JENNIFER: I-M-M

JACK: No, no. I-M-M. No.

JACK AND JENNIFER: (Together ) I-M-P-E-C.

JACK: Wait a minute.

JENNIFER: I think I have it. I-M-P.

JACK: No, no, no, no. Let me get a good look.

JACK KNEELS DOWN TO SEE THE PAD IN THE LIGHT OF THE CANDLE. JENNIFER REMAINS STANDING SO THAT JACK'S FACE IS NOW LEVEL WITH HER CHEST.

JACK: Get it down here where I can see.

JENNIFER: Can you see it? I think that's right. Look at it.

JACK: Ah....yeah....er....that's looks very good.

JACK HAS JUST REALIZED THE POSITION HE IS IN.

JENNIFER: I think you better look at it close because I'm sure there are more words that are spelt incorrectly. See for instance, right here.

JACK: Er....that's....er.....that's good.

JENNIFER: Okay, what about right here?

JENNIFER TURNS TO FACE HIM. JACK NOW IS LOOKING STRAIGHT AT HER CHEST.

oldEp117A
JACK: Um.... that's um.... that's even better.

JENNIFER KNEELS DOWN IN FRONT OF JACK. JACK IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE UNCOMFORTABLE ON ONE HAND, YET ENJOYING IT ON THE OTHER; BUT HE TRIES TO FIGHT HIS FEELINGS.

JENNIFER: And what about....what about this?

JACK: That's....I think that's perfect!

JACK'S FACE IS ALMOST TOUCHING HERS. BY "PERFECT" HE OBVIOUSLY MEANS JENNIFER, BUT HE PRETENDS THAT IT IS IN REGARD TO THE STORY ON KAYLA.

JENNIFER: "Perfect?"

JENNIFER IS ON TO JACK. JACK NODS.

JACK: P-E-R....

JENNIFER: ....F-E-C-T.

JACK: Yeah. "Perfect!"

THEY MOVE CLOSER AND CLOSER UNTIL THEIR NOSES TOUCH AND THEIR LIPS ARE ALMOST KISSING....
oldEp118D

....WHEN SUDDENLY THE LIGHTS COME ON. THEY LEAP APART.

JENNIFER: OH!

JACK: And there is light! And there's our notes and they're very good and I'm sure your professor will be very impressed.

JENNIFER: DAMMIT JACK!

SHE IS FRUSTRATED THAT *YET AGAIN* HE PULLED BACK, AFTER COMING SO CLOSE. JACK IS PARTIALLY REVEALED THAT NOTHING HAPPENED, BUT ONLY *PARTIALLY* REVEALED.

JACK: Now what kind of language is that for an undergrad?

JENNIFER: What is your problem? You know that something was happening right here. Now admit it.

JACK: What are you talking about?

JENNIFER: What do you mean, what am I talking about? You're sweating. I'm sweating.

AGAIN JACK LETS SLIP MORE OF WHAT HE ACTUALLY IS FEELING, BUT REALIZING THE DOUBLE MEANINGS OF WHAT HE IS SAYING HE TRIES TO SAVE HIMSELF.

JACK: That's....ah....that's condensation. That happens when things heat up....I mean when things break down and they've broken down but now they're back on again and it's time for me to get to work.

JENNIFER: It's time for us to get back to work. That's why you asked me to stay here, because you needed me. That's why I stayed.

JACK: And you stayed and we did what we set off to do. We've got our notes so you're free to go to Wings.

JENNIFER: Alright Jack, if that's what you want.

JACK: That's what I want. Because I'm the boss and....

JENNIFER: Because you're the boss....

JACK AND JENNIFER: (Together) ....and the boss always gets what he wants.

JENNIFER: You're the boss. Goodnight Mr. Deveraux.

JACK: Bye Miss H. Drive carefully and don't

SHE LEAVES FRUSTRATED.

JACK (CONT.): ....don't do anything I wouldn't do.

JACK PICKS UP THE CANDLE.

JACK: Out brief candle.
oldEp118E
HE BLOWS OUT THE CANDLE THEY HAD BEEN USING.

SCENE SIX: JENNIFER ARRIVES AT WINGS WHERE EMILIO HAS BEEN WAITING FOR HER TO ARRIVE. EMILIO DEDICATES THEIR FIRST SONG TO JENNIFER. AS THEY ARE SINGING, JENNIFER THINKS BACK OVER HER FIRST PROPER KISS WITH JACK WHEN THEY FOUND THE KEY

SCENE SEVEN: MEANWHILE JACK GOES TO THE COURTHOUSE WHERE THE PRESS IS WAITING FORKAYLA'S VERDICT TO COME IN.

JACK: Hey, peoples of the press. What are you all doing out here?

REPORTER: Where do you think you're going?

JACK: I think I'm going in there. The new DA just cleared us all to get in for the verdict.

REPORTER: What? But the guard said....

JACK: Since when have we ever listened to what the guard said? I'm going to get my pad and pencil.

THE GROUP OF REPORTERS ALL RUSH AT THE GUARD TO FIND OUT WHAT IS GOING ON. WHILE HE IS DISTRACTED, JACK SNEAKS AROUND BEHIND.

JACK: Freedom of the press, freedom of the press.

HE SNEAKS IN THE DOOR AND TAKES A SEAT AT THE BACK OF THE COURT.

SCENE ONE: IT IS THE NEXT MORNING AND JACK IS IN HIS OFFICE, SUFFERING FROM A HANGOVER. HE IS HOLDING A CUP OF HOT COFFEE. JENNIFER COMES IN.

JACK: What are you doing here so early?

JENNIFER: I couldn't wait to see the morning paper.

JACK: Could you keep it down. I'm still waking up.

JENNIFER: It's alright Jack. I've been up for hours. Where's the newspaper?

JACK: There's newspapers all around you. Why are you asking?

JENNIFER: Oh Jack, I don't mean the paper paper, I mean the....

SHE BUMPS HIM AND HE SPILLS COFFEE ON THE NEWSPAPER.

JACK: OOOOOH!

JENNIFER: I'm sorry. I mean the morning paper. Is this the morning edition?

JACK: It was my morning edition.

SHE GRABS IT FROM HIM.

JENNIFER: Okay, Entertainment, Entertainment. Where is it? Entertainment.

JACK: Are you looking for movies? Maybe I recommend a few.

JENNIFER: No, I'm looking for Emilio and Melissa's singing debut review. Here it is.

JACK: Well I hope they didn't get too scorched.

JENNIFER: OH! Oh my gosh. Jack he loved them.

JACK: Oh, imagine that.

JENNIFER: Oh Jack!

JACK: What? Should I put the coffee down? Good.

JENNIFER: Yes. This is even better than I expected.

SHE LEAPS INTO HIS ARMS AND HE GROANS AS SHE GRABS HIM.

JACK: OOOOH!

JENNIFER: Oh Jack Deveraux he thought they were great, amazing....

JACK: Down, please a little more professionalism if you will.

JENNIFER: I'm sorry, I guess I did get a little carried away, huh.

JACK: Yes. Maybe you could save your ardor for someone who really appreciates it more. Like Salem's new Julio Inglesias, Emilio.

JENNIFER: You're right. I was definitely hugging the wrong person.

JACK: Yes, yes.

JENNIFER: Well I can't wait to show this to Emilio.

JACK: That good, huh?

JENNIFER: Oh yeah. This review's going to make them big stars.

JACK: Oh. Excuse me if I don't whip out my pen and little autograph paper.

JENNIFER: "Last night proved an unexpected treat for this jaded reviewer because it brought out what are sure to be Salem's brightest new stars, Emilio Ramirez and Melissa Anderson. Wing's manager, Scott Banning has made a smart move with these newcomers. His popular club had the roof blown off last night as this successful duo moved effortlessly from ballads to rock."

JACK: Makes it sound like the second coming.

JENNIFER: He liked what he saw Jack.

JACK: I think he's being a trifle over enthusiastic, don't you think?

JENNIFER: I knew Emilio had talent.

JACK: Well, something to share with the grandkids.

JENNIFER: Well, never know.

JENNIFER GOES OUT AND CALLS EMILIO. JACK COMES OUT TO LISTEN AND HEARS HER TELLING EMILIO THAT SHE WILL BRING LOTS OF PAPERS SO THAT HE CAN READ THE REVIEW. SHE MAKES A DATE WITH EMILIO FOR LUNCH AT THE SANDOLLAR. JACK LAUGHS OUT LOUD WHEN SHE TELLS EMILIO HE IS A BIG STAR.

SCENE TWO: A BIT LATER MIKE COMES OVER TO SEE JENNIFER AND TELL HER THAT HE IS GOING TO CHINA.

JENNIFER: Who am I going to talk to if you're not here?

MIKE: Maggie, Melissa.

JENNIFER: Well they think I'm crazy because I'm not crazy about Emilio.

JACK COMES OUT OF HIS OFFICE AND HIDES SO HE CAN HEAR WHAT SHE IS SAYING.

MIKE: Are you?

JENNIFER: Crazy about Emilio? I see him a lot.

MIKE: But you're still hung on Jack, huh.

JENNIFER: But, would Emilio be better for me?

MIKE: Well how does he treat you?

JENNIFER: Like any girl would like to be treated. He makes me feel special and he doesn't play games. I know exactly where I stand with him.

MIKE: Unlike some people.

JENNIFER: Which means I should just get over Jack, right.

MIKE: Well what does your instinct say?

JENNIFER: What do you mean?

MIKE: I mean, listen to your heart Jen because it's never going to steer you wrong.

JACK THINKS CAREFULLY ABOUT WHAT MIKE SAID.

JENNIFER: Why do have to go to China? I'm going to miss you so much Mike.

MIKE: I'm going to miss you too squirt.

JENNIFER: Listen, don't you dare go to China without telling April how much you love her. Don't ever let the one you love wonder about that.

JACK IS REALLY THINKING NOW.

SCENE THREE: LATER, JENNIFER AND EMILIO COME BACK FROM LUNCH LAUGHING AND TALKING. JACK IS WAITING.

JACK: Well don't stop laughing on my account but some of us have work to do.

JACK WALKS INTO HIS OFFICE. EMILIO LEANS OVER TO KISS JENNIFER JUST AS JACK COMES OUT OF HIS OFFICE. HE GOES BACK IN AND DOES NOT SEE JENNIFER PULL BACK FROM EMILIO. SHE MAKES EXCUSES THAT IT IS BECAUSE IT IS THE OFFICE. HE SAYS HE UNDERSTANDS THAT SHE WANTS TO GO SLOW. EMILIO LEAVES BUT SHE NOTICES THAT JACK HAS BEEN WATCHING.

SCENE FOUR: LATER SHE GOES IN TO SEE JACK.

JACK: Shouldn't you be leaving?

JENNIFER: I came back to finish my story.

JACK: Then what are you doing in my office?

JENNIFER: I just wanted to tell you that I was still here.

JACK: That's funny. I didn't even notice you were gone. I thought you were off with Emilio.

JENNIFER: Well I thought I'd come back and finish my work. I mean after all I did spend the whole afternoon with Emilio.

JACK: Oh that's true. How fortunate for you. Did you kids have a good time?

JENNIFER: Yeah, yeah, we had a great time. I mean this was a really special day for Emilio.

JACK: (Sarcarstic, with a hint of jealousy) Yes, Salem's new singing sensation.

JENNIFER: Well not only is he a wonderful singer, I mean he treats me wonderfully.

JACK: Yeah.

JENNIFER: I mean the least I could do is take him out to lunch.

JACK: Well next time you do this why don't you tell it to The Chronicle. I think they have a little more time than I do.

JENNIFER: I just thought I owed you an explanation.

JACK: You don't owe me anything except an honest day's work which seems to be in short supply around here.

JENNIFER: Fine Jack. I will work all night then.

JACK: No! No, you're not going to be working here by yourself.

JENNIFER: Yes I will. I don't care about working by myself here.

JACK: Look the point is if you work all night here you could slip or fall or run into a wall and you could sue me. And I don't need the aggravation, alright.

JENNIFER: Okay, thanks for volunteering.

JACK: Huh, volunt....I didn't volunteer for anything.

SHE WALKS IN HIS OFFICE AND PICKS UP THE PHONE.

JACK: Who are you calling?

JENNIFER: Your favorite take-out restaurant. We're ordering in.

JACK: Wait a minute, I'm the boss and nobody bosses me around. (On the phone) Goodbye.

JENNIFER PICKS THE PHONE BACK UP.

JENNIFER: Look Jack if we're going to be working here all night....

JACK: We're not!

JENNIFER: ....which we are, we're eating dinner.

JACK: What?

JENNIFER: Hello. Oh hi. Is this Chinese Imperial?

JACK: Wait a minute. I'm the boss here. Nobody bosses me around. We do not eat here in this office. This is a place of business and....

HE STOPS TO LISTEN TO JENNIFER ORDER CHINESE TAKE-OUT.

SCENE FIVE: LATER THEY ARE WORKING AT HIS DESK. HE IS HOLDING SOME PAPER AND SHE SPOON FEEDS HIM SOME NOODLES.
oldEp117F

JENNIFER:
Here you go.

JACK: Huh.

JENNIFER: This is great Chinese isn't it Jack?

JACK: I could be feeding myself at home, you know.

JENNIFER: Jack we are getting a lot of work done this way.

JACK: I was getting work done.

JENNIFER: Jack I can finish the article when dinner's over.

JACK: Don't put yourself out, alright.

JENNIFER: You know Emilio says that I work too hard. Isn't that sweet? He really worries about me.

JACK: Heheh. I guess it's nice to have somebody like that, somebody to worry about you.

JENNIFER: Well that's Emilio. He always treats me great and he's always there when I need him.

JACK: Hmmm. So what's the problem?

JENNIFER: What's the problem?

JACK: Hmmm. If Emilio has all these wonderful, wonderful qualities why don't you do more than lunch with him?

JENNIFER: Cause I don't know if I can give Emilio what he wants. You know....you know.

JACK: You mean....well I think it's about time that we got back to work here.
oldEp117G

JENNIFER:
Jack I really need to talk about this.

JACK: What do I look like, Ann Landers? I can't help you out with this.

JENNIFER: Maybe I'm being old fashioned alright but I've been saving myself for the right guy. But the problem is, is that I don't know if Emilio is the right guy.

JACK IS TRYING TO STAY DISTRACTED FROM WHAT SHE IS SAYING. SHE BEGINS TO SIP MORE AND MORE WINE.

JENNIFER: It's just that I've been waiting so long for the right guy you know that I just want it to be perfect.

JACK: We don't need to be talking about this.

JENNIFER: Look Jack, Glen was my first boyfriend. I really liked Glen and I thought that he was going to be the one but it just didn't work out.

JACK: Jennifer.

JENNIFER: Then Frankie came along. I loved Frankie....

JACK: Frankie....yes.

JENNIFER: But he left. He just went away.

JACK: (Getting nervous) I tell you what. I'll even help clean up.

JENNIFER: And Jack, now there's Emilio. Now what am I supposed to do about Emilio? What do you think I should do?

JACK: Ah....I don't know. Marry the guy and have little curly headed bambinos.

JENNIFER: Really?

JACK: Jennifer, why are you asking me?

JENNIFER: Don't you know why Jack?

SHE LEANS AGAINST HIM AND PUTS HER LIPS UP TO HIS AND CLOSES HER EYES. JACK IMMEDIATELY BACKS AWAY.

JENNIFER: Jack where are you going?

JACK: I've got to see a man about a horse.

JENNIFER: Jack you always do this. JACK WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

SHE THROWS FOOD ALL OVER THE DOOR JUST AS HE SHUTS IT BEHIND HIM.

JENNIFER: I HATE YOU SO MUCH SOMETIMES JACK.

OUTSIDE JACK JUST NODS TO HIMSELF.

SCENE ONE: THE JURY FIND KAYLA GUILTY OF MURDERING MARINA TOSCANO AND STEVE BEGINS TO SCREAMAND SHOUT. JACK AND ROMAN TRY TO HOLD HIM BACK. KAYLA IS TAKEN BACK TO JAILAND JACK STAYS TO SUPPORT STEVE.

JACK: Steve I'm sorry.

STEVE: Well don't worry man, I'm not going to lose her for long. We both know who killed her.

JACK: Well maybe there's something I could do. I think maybe I could dig something up that could help.

STEVE: Thanks. Kayla's going to need all the help she can get.

STEVE PUTS HIS HAND ON JACK'S SHOULDER THEN LEAVES.

SCENE ONE: THE NEXT DAY JACK DECIDES TO SEE ISABELLA AND GOES TO THE LOFT.

JACK: Isabella are you up here?

ISABELLA: Oh Jack, hi.

JACK: There you are.

ISABELLA: I saw Roman today and he said he thought he'd have a better chance of getting Marina's murderer if he knew our mother better so I was thinking that I'd give him the diary.

JACK: The diary!

ISABELLA: Yeah well what do you think?

JACK: Ah....well....ah sure if it's going to help get the killer then you have no choice.

ISABELLA: Right. It's just that my father went to a lot of trouble to keep it hidden all these years and I'm sure he'd be upset with people reading my mother's private thoughts.

JACK: Well how do you think he'd feel if your sister's murderer got away unpunished?

ISABELLA: Right, right.

JACK: Look....er, I think you've got to go ahead and do what you've got to do, you know.

ISABELLA: Right, I've got to give Roman the diary.

JACK: Ah, just, ah, just make sure that you don't tell Roman where you got it.

ISABELLA: Why not?

JACK: Well it's no big deal. It's just that....that's just a reporters thing. Don't disclose your sources. That's all.

ISABELLA: Okay. I owe you that much. If he asks I'll just say I've had it all along.

JACK: Good. Very good. Well if you've got nothing else, I've got to get back to work.

ISABELLA: Well thanks for helping me to make up my mind.

JACK: Sure, anytime. Glad to be of service. Isabella you've got nothing to worry about here. Really I'm sure there's nothing in that diary that could do any damage or hurt anybody, okay.

ISABELLA: Okay.

JACK LEAVES.

SCENE TWO: RUNS INTO JO ON THE PIER.

JO: Jack did you hear the verdict?

JACK: Yeah, yeah I did.

JO: Jack I know that you're worried about Steve and Kayla but is something else on your mind? You seem so worried.

JACK: Ah, maybe I am. I got a friend who likes to keep secrets and thinks it's the best way to protect people, like friends. Asked my advice and I said I think that's the right thing to do.

JO: Well I don't know much about keeping secrets but I do think it's important to protect a friend.

JACK: Yeah that's right.

JO: I mean I think you should help your friends.

JACK: Yeah, that's what I think too. Look I gotta get going.

JO: Okay, take care of yourself.

JACK: You too.

JO: Okay.

JACK WALKS AWAY THEN STOPS AND LOOKS AT THE PAGES HE REMOVED FROM THE DIARY.

SCENE THREE: DURING THIS TIME THERE ARE HINTS THAT POSSIBLY ISABELLA IS MORE INVOLVED OR AT LEAST KNOWS MORE ABOUT HER SISTER'S, MARINA, DEATH. COULD SHE IN FACT BE THE MURDER? VICTOR ALSO SEEMS TO BE WITHHOLDING EVIDENCE.
