SCENE ONE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE TRAPPED UNDERGROUND IN TUNNELS BUT LEOPOLD, LAWRENCE'S FATHER, HAS COME BACK TO HELP THEM.

 

POLDY: HELLO, ANYBODY THERE? HELLO!

JENNIFER: Jack can you believe this? Poldy to the rescue.

JACK: Yeah, right. Lawrence's father to the rescue.

JENNIFER: No, Poldy's okay. I promise you.

JACK: Just a minute. LEOPOLD, LEOPOLD, IT'S.... IT'S ME, IT'S JASPER JASPER DEVERAUX.

POLDY: JACK, OH SPLENDID, ARE YOU ALRIGHT?

JACK: OH.... OH WE'RE A BIT TRAPPED DOWN HERE.

POLDY: DON'T WORRY. I CAN GET YOU OUT.

JACK: Said the spider to the fly.

JENNIFER: Jack you've got to trust him. He's going to get us out of here Jack.

JACK: What's he going to do? I hope his little old jalopy doubles as an earth mover.

JENNIFER: Jack I'm dying to get out of here alright.

JACK: Don't use those words okay. Don't use those words.

 

DIRT STARTS TO FALL ON THEM AGAIN.

 

JACK: AH.... AH.... LEOPOLD?

POLDY: YES.

JACK: SO TELL US. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GET US OUT OF HERE?

POLDY: WELL I KNOW THESE TUNNELS. I ARRANGED TO HAVE THEM BUILT.

JACK: Must have been a slow day in the country.

JENNIFER: Jack.

JACK: OKAY, WELL, SO WERE YOU ALL HANGING ROUND ONE DAY AND YOU JUST DECIDED, WHAT THE HECK, LET'S BUILD SOME SECRET TUNNELS UNDER THE PROPERTY. IS THAT WHAT YOU SAID?

POLDY: LISTEN, AT THE TIME OF THE CONSTRUCTION MY SON INSTALLED A SECRET EXIT. LOOK UP.

JACK: I'VE ALREADY SAID MY PRAYERS LEOPOLD. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

POLDY: THERE'S A CONTROL KNOB JUST LIKE A COMBINATION LOCK ON A SAFE. IT'S HIDDEN NEAR THE ROOF OF THE TUNNEL. FIND IT.

JACK: Yeah he says.

POLDY: DIAL THE CORRECT COMBINATION OF FIGURES AND THE WALL WILL OPEN.

 

JACK AND JENNIFER BEGIN TO LOOK ALL OVER THE ROOF.

 

JACK: WAIT A MINUTE, WELL WHERE IS IT, THIS CONTROL KNOB?

POLDY: IT'S ABOUT SIX INCHES BENEATH THE ROOF ON THE NORTH WALL.

JACK: THE NORTH WALL.

 

JACK LOOKS BEHIND HIM.

 

JACK: The north wall. Okay the north wall....

 

JENNIFER SPINS HIM ROUND.

 

JENNIFER: Jack, the other north wall.

JACK: Oh the other north wall. AH I'M SORRY I DON'T SEE ANYTHING.

POLDY: LAWRENCE HID IT WELL. IT'S VERY HARD TO SPOT. YOU'LL HAVE TO FIND A CREVICE, A NATURAL SHELF LIKE INDENTATION.

JACK: THIS WHOLE PLACE IS A CREVICE. I DON'T SEE IT

JENNIFER: Look Jack, right there Jack, look.

JACK: Right.... what.... THAT!

JENNIFER: Yes.

POLDY: WHEN YOU FIND IT YOU'LL KNOW.

JACK: I THINK WE FOUND IT.

POLDY: WELL THEN YOU KNOW. YOU'RE GOOD AS FREE.

JACK: Heheheh. Okay here we go.

 

A BIG PILE OF DIRT FALLS ON THEM.

SCENE TWO: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE TRYING TO OPEN THE COMBINATION LOCK, TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM THE CAVE.

 

JENNIFER: JACK!

JACK: OH, OH, AHHHH.... AHHHHH.

JENNIFER: Okay.

JACK: I think we know the meaning of the words so near and yet so far.

JENNIFER: Alright, go slow.

JACK: LEOPOLD, THIS IS GOING TO TAKE A LITTLE BIT OF TIME, ALRIGHT. Ah just stay where you are.

JENNIFER: No I'm going to help you Jack.

JACK: No you're.... no, no, no. Stay where you are!

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: Please! See how shakey this ground here is and if we both go out there, we're both going to go down. So please just stay where you are.

JENNIFER: Okay, just be careful.

JACK: I'll be careful.

 

JACK CREEPS FORWARD AND JENNIFER CREEPS RIGHT ALONG BEHIND HIM.

 

JENNIFER: Jack.

SCENE THREE: FARTHER AHEAD, FRANKIE HAS A DREAM THAT JENNIFER DUMPS JACK AND COMES BACK TO HIM.

SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE JACK AND JENNIFER ARE GETTING DIRT DUMPED ON THEM FROM THE TUNNEL.

 

JACK: Okay, okay, near miss, near miss. Doesn't count.

JENNIFER: Jack wait, be careful.

JACK: I'll be careful.

JENNIFER: Jack.

JACK: Just, just stay where you are, thank you.

JENNIFER: Let me help you okay. I can make this easier.

JACK: JENNIFER! Please. For once when I ask you to do something just do it, alright. Now this is very shakey ground. If it goes down, and we both sincerely hope it doesn't, it would be most discouraging if both of us went down with it. So please.

 

JENNIFER WRIGGLES BACK AWAY FROM HIM.

 

JACK (CONT.): Thank you!

POLDY: HOW ARE YOU DOING IN THERE?

JACK: WE'RE GETTING THERE, WE'RE GETTING THERE. JACK CREEPS FORWARD AGAIN AND JENNIFER FOLLOWS.

JACK: AHHHHH, OKAY I TOUCHED IT. JACK CAN JUST REACH THE CONTROL KNOB.

JENNIFER: Jack you got it, you got it.

JACK: Okay, I touched it.

JENNIFER: Jack, you got it.

JACK: I can touch it, I can reach it, I can reach it now. I can reach the whole knob.

JENNIFER: Alright.

JACK: So what....

JENNIFER: YOU GOT IT.

JACK: I GOT IT.

POLDY: OH THAT'S VERY GOOD.

JACK: Ohhh, NOW WHAT'S THE COMBINATION?

POLDY: WHAT?

JACK: WHAT'S THE COMBINATION?

POLDY: Oh it's very simple. YOU DIAL THE COMBINATION.

JACK: YEAH, OKAY, WE'VE ESTABLISHED THAT. WHAT'S THE NUMBERS?

POLDY:WELL THE FIRST NUMBER GOES TO THE RIGHT, THE SECOND NUMBER TO THE LEFT AND THEN RIGHT AGAIN.

JACK: Okay, we've got the direction but once again, WHAT ARE THE NUMBERS?

POLDY: (Beat) NUMBERS. THE NUMBERS ARE.... I DON'T KNOW.

JACK: NO!.... COME ON, YOU GOTTA KNOW.

POLDY: I'M AFRAID LAWRENCE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS ECACTLY WHAT THE COMBINATION IS.

JACK: YOU HAD TO KNOW IT AT SOME POINT.

POLDY: WHY WOULD I HAVE TO KNOW? I ASKED LAWRENCE, HE PROGRAMMED THE LOCK.

JACK: Swell!

JENNIFER: LOOK POLDY, HE MUST HAVE TOLD YOU THE NUMBERS AT ONE TIME.

POLDY: OH, YES HE DID.

JENNIFER: Alright, well think hard, you must know.

POLDY: I used to know it.

JACK: Well, IF YOU USED TO KNOW IT, YOU'VE GOT TO REMEMBER IT NOW.

POLDY: IT WAS SOMEONE'S BIRTHDAY.

JACK: Someone's birthday, someone's birthday. Ah.... ah....

POLDY: (Not sure) LAWRENCE'S BIRTHDAY?

JACK: Ah, LAWRENCE, LAWRENCE.

JENNIFER: (To Jack) Maybe Lawrence's.

JACK: Maybe Lawrence's yeah. (To Poldy) WHAT'S LAWRENCE'S BIRTHDAY?

POLDY: MARCH 15, 1960.

JACK: (To himself) Ah, Pisces, huh.

JENNIFER: Three, fifteen, 60, Jack.

JACK: Okay.

JENNIFER: Three to the right, fifteen to the left, 60 to the right.

JACK: Alright. THREE, FIFTEEN AND SIXTY.

JENNIFER: Okay.

POLDY: DID IT WORK?

JACK: Not so you'd notice!

POLDY: WELL THAT'S NOT GOOD.

JACK: That's a brilliant observation from your end.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute Jack, do you hear that?

JACK: Hear what?

JENNIFER: That. Do you hear that?

JACK: I don't hear anything, what that? What is that?

JENNIFER: Yes, that.

JACK: That.... LEOPOLD!

POLDY: YES.

JACK: LEOPOLD, I THINK WE'VE SPRUNG A LEAK DOWN HERE. THERE'S THIS HISSING COMING FROM SOMEWHERE.

POLDY: Oh I know what that is.

JACK: WHAT?

POLDY: That's the backup device that Lawrence installed.

JACK: The backup device, the backup device?

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: WHAT BACKUP DEVICE?

POLDY: IN CASE SOME TRESPASSERS FOUND THEIR WAY INTO THE SECRET TUNNEL. THIS DEVICE IS GEARED TO.... CHOKE THEM TO DEATH.

 

JENNIFER HAS STARTED TO COUGH AND JACK CANNOT GET HIS BREATH.

 

JACK: WHAT? I COULDN'T HEAR YOU.

POLDY: CHOKE THEM TO DEATH.

JACK: Jennifer stop your coughing. I can't hear. WHAT?

POLDY: WELL YOU SEE THAT'S THE TOXIC GAS I'M AFRAID.

JACK: What?

POLDY: TOXIC GAS. I FOGOT TO MENTIN IT. IT ACTIVATES AUTOMATICALLY WHEN SOMEONE, YOU IN THIS CASE, TRIES AN INCORRECT COMBINATION.

JACK: Toxic gas! I heard. Jennifer, get down, get down. Get below ground. Hot air rises. {Obviously see in-joke by Matthew) What that has to do with poison and toxic gas I have no idea.

JENNIFER: Do you think we're going to die?

SCENE FOUR: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE BECOMING EFFECTED BY THE POISON GAS THAT ESCAPED WHEN JACK USED THE INCORRECT COMBINATION TO UNLOCK THE THE TRAP DOOR FOR THE TUNNELS. JENNIFER IS FALLING ASLEEPJACK BEGINS TO COUGH VIOLENTLY.

 

JENNIFER: Jack let me go to sleep.

JACK: No, no, don't go to sleep. Just don't breathe. No, oh, you can breathe, just don't breathe this. Don't breathe, we got bad gas down here. Just don't breathe. We got.... LEOPOLD?

POLDY: JACK WHAT'S GOING ON?

JACK: LEOPOLD, WHO'S BIRTHDAY IS THE COMBINATION OF THAT DAMN DOOR?

POLDY: I'm not sure.

JACK: OH PLEASE IT'S GOT TO BE SOMEBODY. IS IT, IS IT.... AH...HOW ABOUT CARLY.... OR WHAT.... KATERINA?

POLDY: YES, KATERINA.

JACK: KATERINA. WHAT'S HER BIRTHDAY?

POLDY: KATERINA, HER BIRTHDAY IS....

JACK: (Rather frustrated by this point) OH COME ON, WE ALL KNOW WHEN HER BIRTHDAY IS BY THIS POINT. I'M GOING OVER....

JENNIFER: I'm just going to take a nap.

 

JACK STRUGGLES OVER TO THE KNOB AND DIALS IN KATERINA'S BIRTHDAY, STARTING WITH THE DAY, THEN MONTH.

 

JACK: OH.... AHHHH.... THREE.... ELEVEN.... AHHHH. That's it. (Beat) THAT'S IT! I think it's stopped.

 

BEHIND HIM THE WALL SLIDES AWAY.

 

JACK: Hey it's open, it's open. Start breathing again Jennifer. We got some air, we got some good air this time. Come on, wake up. Come on, time to get up and start breathing.

JENNIFER: I want to nap.

JACK: No! No more naps. Wake up, wake up, time to breathe. Whoa.... breathe, come on. Are you okay? I think we're alright.

SCENE FIVE: JENNIFER COMES ROUND AND THEY MANAGE TO BREATHE IN SOME FRESH AIR.

 

JACK: Lucky, they would have been measuring us for halos.

JENNIFER: Oh man, you saved my life Jack.

JACK: That I did.

JENNIFER: That was very quick thinking coming up with Katerina's birthday to break through the code.

JACK: Oh well you know, asphyxiation does wonders for the constitution.

JENNIFER: You really are my hero Jack.

JACK: Yeah.

POLDY: JACK!

JENNIFER: Poldy.

POLDY: Are you alright?

JACK: Oh, yeah we're just fine now thanks to you.

POLDY: Oh Jennifer if anything had happened to you I never would have forgiven the person responsible for all this.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute, you just called me Jennifer.

POLDY: Yes, well that's your name isn't it?

JENNIFER: How did you know my name?

POLDY: (Feeling bad about all the bad things Lawrence did, and guilty because he did not prevent them) Well there are a lot of things I didn't want to know. I didn't want to see how cruel Lawrence could be but unfortunately I came face to face with irrefutable proof.

JACK: Well I'll tell you something, it was very fortunate for us.

JENNIFER: I'm sorry Poldy.

POLDY: No I'm the one who should be apologizing to you two and also your friends. Where are they, Julie, Kayla and the others?

JACK: Oh I believe they're all down that-away, trapped, kind of similar to the way we were trapped.

POLDY: Then we have to go rescue them.

JACK: No, no, no, no. No wait a minute, you stay there. I'll go.

POLDY: I feel responsible

JACK: No, don't feel responsible, okay. I'll do it.

JENNIFER: No, what if there is a fall or another cave-in. What if something happens to you? No one's going to know.

JACK: Ah, don't worry about me. (Beat) Worry about us. (Smiling).

JACK (CONT.): (Beat) I'm going to go.

 

JACK HEADS BACK DOWN THE TUNNEL WHILE JENNIFER IS VERY SCARED. SHE LEAVES WITH POLDY TO TRY AND GET HELP OUTSIDE.

SCENE SIX: THEY GET TO ONE OF POLDY'S CARS BUT IT WILL NOT START. WHILE THEY ARE THERE HE TELLS HER THAT HE KNOWS THAT LAWRENCE REALLY HURT HER AND HE IS VERY SORRY. THEY CANNOT START THE CAR SO THEY DECIDE TO TRY THE PHONE IN THE VILLA.

SCENE SEVEN: BACK DOWN THE TUNNEL, JACK FINDS FRANKIE UNCONSCIOUS FROM THE LANDSLIDE.

 

JACK: Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go. I hate these dark holes. I hate this. There must be something around here somewhere. Francoise, is that you? Take...take...take it easy okay. I guess you already are. Ah, here I'll just get you...I'll get some of this out of the way. Ah, I know how Fred Flintstone felt working in that quarry. Here.... ahhhh.

FRANKIE: (Muttering) Jen.... Jennifer.

 

JACK LOOKS DOWN AT THE UNCONSCIOUS FRANKIE AND TALKS TO HIM AS HE REMOVES SOME MORE ROCKS.

 

JACK: Still thinking about Jennifer, huh. Well I tell you what, you got your work cut out for you. And you're not doing a very good job now. She's gone through a lot since you left Salem, I tell you that. She's grown up, developed, become a very very good reporter. And that's.... ah.... that's because of me. Because I trained her and worked with her and gave her a lot of hell. Funny thing is she loved it as hard as that is to believe. So I tell you what, you got a lot of ways to go but you know something, what's life without a little challenge, huh. As they say.... go for it! (Beat) Alright, you got to get out of this now. Don't.... come on, it's going to be okay, huh. It's.... hey!

 

JACK PUTS HIS HAND OVER FRANKIE'S MOUTH AND CANNOT FEEL ANY AIR COMING OUT. HE IS SCARED FRANKIE IS DEAD. IN THE VILLA, POLDY FINDS OUT THE PHONE IS DEAD SO THEY DECIDE TO WALK TO TOWN.

SCENE EIGHT: MEANWHILE ROMAN HAS ARRIVED TO RESCUE EVERYBODY AND HE RUNS INTO JENNIFER.

SCENE ONE: JACK HAS FOUND FRANKIE UNCONSCIOUS IN THE TUNNEL AND IS TRYING TO REVIVE HIM. MEANWHILE JENNIFER HAS FOUND ROMAN WHO IS THERE TO HELP WITH THE RESCUE. THE OTHERS ARE ALL TRAPPED IN A ROOM WHERE ALICE WAS HELD PRISONER.

 

JACK: Francoise, come on. Francoise, look this is not funny. Come on, wake up, wake up. Come on. Listen, look I came all the way in here to get you out of this. If you get killed now I'm going to be dead too. I will, that's true. Come on, wake up please, please. Please wake up. (Beat) Francoise come on please wake up. Come on, for Jasper Jasper, come on, come on, come on.

 

FRANKIE STARTS TO COUGH IN JACK'S FACE.

 

JACK: Ah there you go. There you go, there you go. That's it, back to life. Come on, let's get out of here. Come on, come on.

FRANKIE: Deveraux?

JACK: That's right, in the skin, at your service. Let's.... oh no.

 

MORE DIRT FALLS ALL OVER JACK.

 

JACK: Whoever said brave men only die once never meant me. Let's go, come on, can you get up, can you move? I think the rest of the ceiling is going to try for the floor. We gotta go this way. Come on.

FRANKIE: Ahhhh.

JACK: Let's crawl and dig this....

FRANKIE: Jack.... thank you, thank you.

JACK: Who's your buddy, who's your pal. Let's go.

FRANKIE: Yeah.

 

JACK AND FRANKIE CONTINUE DOWN THE TUNNEL TO TRY AND FIND THE OTHERS.

SCENE TWO: MEANWHILE JENNIFER SHOWS ROMAN THE ENTRANCE AND POLDY INSISTS ON SHOWING HIM WHERE TO GO. JENNIFER GOES BACK TO THE VILLA TO WAIT FOR THE ISA.

SCENE THREE: MEANWHILE THE OTHERS HEAR JACK AND FRANKIE CALLING TO THEM FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WALL.

 

FRANKIE: Is anybody there, anybody?

JACK: Yeah anybody.

CARLY: Francois? KAYLA: Jack? Jack can you hear us? Get away from the wall.

 

BO AND SHANE DECIDE TO BREAK DOWN THE WALL TO GET OUT TO JACK AND FRANKIE.

 

JACK: WE KNOW.

 

BO AND SHANE PUSH A LARGE TIMBER BEAM THROUGH THE WALL WHILE FRANKIE AND JACK REMOVE MORE ROCKS.

 

JACK: What are you doing in there, playing patty cake? Come on.

FRANKIE: Look out, look out Jack.

 

ANOTHER LANDSLIDE LANDS ALL OVER THEM.

 

JACK: AHHHHHH! I HATE THIS.... OHHHH.

 

FRANKIE: We're alright.

JACK: We've got to move or move her permanently.

 

KALYA AND CARLY MAKE A STRETCHER FOR ALICE TO LIFT HER OUT.

MEANWHILE ROMAN AND POLDY HAVE MADE IT UP THE TUNNEL.

 

ROMAN: Deveraux!

JACK: What? Roman is that you.

ROMAN: Hey Frankie.

 

ROMAN HUGS FRANKIE.

 

JACK: Okay come on, enough huggy, huggy, kissy, kissy, we gotta get out of here.

 

BO AND SHANE PICK UP THE STRETCHER AND BEGIN TO GET HER OUT OF THE ROOM.

SCENE FOUR: UPSTAIRS IN THE VILLA, JENNIFER IS WAITING FOR THE ISA WHEN LAWRENCE ARRIVES. SHE IS SCARED FOR A MINUTE OR TWO AS HE THREATENS HER BUT THEN SHE STANDS UP TO HIM AND THROWS THE WEDDING RING AT HIM AND TELLS HIM HE WILL PAY FOR WHAT HE DID TO HER. HE LAUGHS AT HER AND LEAVES TO FIND HIS FATHER.

SCENE FIVE: POLDY IS TRYING TO APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE WHEN A LARGE LANDSLIDE HAPPENS AND POLDY IS HURT. AT THAT MOMENT LAWRENCE ARRIVES AND IS DISTRAUGHT ABOUT HIS FATHER. HE ASKS EVERYONE TO HELP HIM WITH HIS FATHER. THEY ALL STARE AT HIS SUDDEN COMPASSION. THEY MANAGE TO GET ALICE OUT SAFELY AND THEN ALL THE OTHERS GET UP TO THE SURFACE.

SCENE SIX: ALICE IS LYING ON THE STRETCHER AND IS WORRIED ABOUT JENNIFER. JENNIFER RUSHES TO HER GRANDMOTHER'S SIDE WHILE JACK IS LEANING ON THE GARDEN WALL WATCHING.

 

JENNIFER: Oh grandma. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. This never would have happened and you never would have come here.

ALICE: Darling, darling, it was my decision. There was nothing you could have done to stop me.

 

JACK COMES OVER AND CROUCHES DOWN BESIDE JENNIFER.

 

JENNIFER: Grandma I love you so much.

ALICE: And it was worth it, every single minute if you're safe. Oh my Jennifer Rose....

 

ALICE NOTICES JACK, IS HAPPY THAT HE AND JENNIFER ARE TOGETHER. FRANKIE IS NOT THAT HAPPY TO SEE THAT ALICE LIKES THE IDEA OF JACK AND JENNIFER.

 

ALICE (CONT.): Jack?

JACK: Oh, right here (He gives here a little wave).

ALICE: There you are, the two of you together. It's just.... just what I always wanted.

 

THE AMBULANCE ARRIVES. SHANE ANNOUNCES THAT THE AMBULANCE CANNOT COME INTO THE GARDEN, SO THEY WILL HAVE TO CARRY ALICE OUT TO IT.

 

JACK: It sounds like a plan.

 

SHANE AND JACK EACH TAKE ONE END OF ALICE'S STRETCHER, TO CARRY HER TO THE AMBULANCE.JENNIFER WANTS TO GO WITH ALICE, WORRIED AND FEELING GUILTY.

SHANE: You ready?

JACK: (Grunting as he lifts his end of the stretcher) Ready!

 

THEY CARRY THE BODY TO THE AMBULANCE. JULIE AND JENNIFER GO WITH ALICE, SHANE, AND JACK; BO GOES TO CHECK ON THE REST OF THE GANG, BACK IN THE TUNNEL.
