[Air early February 1991]

 

SCENE ONE: JENNIFER IS FROZEN IN TIME AS SHE SEES JACK AND EVE IN BED TOGETHER. SHE DROPS THE FLOWERS SHE HAD PICKED UP AND RUNS OUT OF THE ROOM. EVE HEARS HER AND GETS UP.

 

EVE: Jennifer!

 

EVE GOES OUT INTO THE HALL IN A PINK SATIN NIGHTGOWN.

 

EVE: Jennifer, Jennifer, what are you doing here?

JENNIFER: What am I doing here? I came here to see Jack, that's what I'm doing here.

EVE: I'm sorry. He's had a very eventful night so I really don't want you to wake him up. Is there something you want to ask or what?

JENNIFER: That isn't any of your business Eve.

EVE: I wouldn't be so sure. As you can see we've gotten very very close.

JENNIFER: Are you kidding me? Do you expect me to believe that you and Jack...that something happened between the two of you?

EVE: I don't know, why else would we be here Jen?

JENNIFER: Because you set it up, that's why.

VE: I set it up. That's it.

JENNIFER: Yes. You got him drunk and then you hopped in bed to make it look like he slept with you.

EVE: Well if that's what you want to believe.

JENNIFER: That's what I want to believe? That's the truth. Jack would never in his right mind go to bed with somebody like you Eve.

EVE: Ooooh, like you're the only one he'll ever want. Grow up Jen. Jack did. He realized there was nothing left for you two so he found someone else.

JENNIFER: Oh yeah, you're lying Eve and I'm going to go in there right now and find out what's going on.

EVE: Before you do Jennifer, I think there's something you should know.

JENNIFER: Eve I have heard enough of you lies. I'm going to go in there and find out the truth from Jack.

EVE: Jennifer I'm doing this for your own good because what I have to tell you I don't think you want to hear from Jack.

JENNIFER: Why don't you let me decide that? You can't keep me away from him.

EVE: I DON'T WANT YOU TO DISTURB MY HUSBAND!

 

JENNIFER'S MOUTH FALLS OPEN.

 

JENNIFER: Your what?

EVE: Ah.... you know, I didn't.... this is what I've been trying to tell you. I didn't want you finding out this way.

JENNIFER: Are you trying to tell me that you and Jack are....

 

EVE NODS.

 

EVE: We're married.

JENNIFER: NO YOU'RE NOT!

 

EVE IS ENJOYING ALL THIS.

 

EVE: Yes we are. Did you see all the rice.... and the champagne.... and the ring? Did you see this ring? It's true. I'm Mrs. Jack Deveraux. Just think, I don't even have to change my initials. I like the sound of it already, don't you. (Beat) I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I don't mean to rub this in, I don't.

JENNIFER: You're not sorry Eve. You're probably doing this on purpose just to get to me, right.

EVE: Jennifer on the contrary. The whole world doesn't revolve around you. I have much better reasons for marrying Jack like.... I love him and he loves me.

JENNIFER: Are you kidding me? Do you really expect me to believe that Eve?

EVE: I really don't give a damn what you believe Jen because now this is my penthouse and you know what, I'm going to ask you to leave.

JENNIFER: That's fine because I am going to find out what's going on.

EVE: Okay you do that. I hope you don't take it too hard. And we'll send you a little announcement okay just in case you want to send us a gift. Bye.

 

JENNIFER STORMS OUT OF THE APARTMENT AND GOES BACK TO THE LOFT.

SCENE TWO: LATER THAT EVENING, EVE AND JACK ARE AWAKE AND EVE IS GETTING READY TO GO TO WORK AT WINGS. JACK IS SITTING IN BED HOLDING AN ICE PACK TO HIS HEAD.

 

EVE: Is the coffee helping?

JACK: Oh, it's like transfusion to a corpse but I thank you for making it.

EVE: Oh it's what any good wifey would do.

 

JACK LIFTS HIS LEGS FROM UNDER THE COVERS AND HE IS STILL WEARING HIS SUIT PANTS AND SOCKS.

 

JACK: Tell me something, was I seeing pink elephants or did I actually call Diana Colville and convince her not to sell her shares to Lawrence?

EVE: No, you talked to her. And she's giving you a chance to outbid Lawrence but by the way it sounded she doesn't seem to like Lawrence much either.

JACK: I KNEW IT! I KNEW YOU WERE LISTENING IN ON THE EXTENSION. I'm getting a private line.

 

EVE SITS DOWN ON THE BED NEXT TO HIM.

 

EVE: Are you going to start keeping secrets from me now Jack, huh? How are we going to convince Julie we're happily married with this kind of attitude?

JACK: I want you to get on the phone right now, call Julie and try to sound blissful.

EVE: I think we should rehearse this with someone else first, don't you think?

JACK: No, no! Let's just get it over with Julie then we'll just break it to the rest of the town a little more gently.

EVE: You mean like.... Jennifer?

JACK: Did I say Jennifer? I didn't say that. I didn't say anything.

EVE: Well it doesn't matter see, because Jennifer.... knows already.

JACK: What do you mean, she knows already?

EVE: Well she came by tonight when you were passed out.

JACK: Wait.... what.... so.... so what, you talked to her and you told that you and I got....

EVE: I had to Jack. (Beat) She saw us in bed together.

JACK: So Miss Horton.... saw us sleeping together.

EVE: Yeah she just breezed on in. I guess we were so drunk we forgot to lock the door.

JACK: Yes.... ah.... but that's all that we did, was sleep. (Beat) Right?

JACK SEEMS SLIGHTLY UNSURE ON THIS POINT.

 

EVE: You don't remember? Thanks, I'm crushed! I'm crushed Jack, I'm crushed.

JACK: Oh now come on, please, please. I know.... I know that that's all we did. We didn't do anything.

EVE: Don't worry, don't worry. You were a perfect gentleman I promise. Except.... for the burping.... argh!

JACK: So you're saying that she thinks that.... ah....

EVE: I'm saying that we should make sure that everybody thinks we have a very very happy marriage Jack.

JACK: So you didn't do anything to convince her that we did otherwise, is that what you're saying?

EVE: Why are you so worried about what Jennifer thinks anyway? I mean she obviously wasn't worried about you.

JACK: I thought that we've exhausted that subject.

EVE: You know what, I'll never mention her name again.

JACK: Good.

EVE: But you'd better get over you know who. Because you're a married man now Jack.

JACK: Let's.... let's clarify one thing alright. We have a piece of paper now that says that we are married. If you think.... if you think that means anything more than that...

EVE: Wait a minute, you mean we're not going to share the same bed?

 

SHE CLIMBS ON THE BED NEXT TO HIM; TERRIFIED HE BACKS UP AWAY FROM HER.

EVE: We're not going to sleep together? Oh.

JACK: Don't get any ideas.

EVE: Don't flatter yourself Jack. I'm not anymore interested in you than you are in me.

JACK: Well that's.... that's.... good. At least we.... at least we understand each other then.

EVE: We understand perfectly. That's why we make the perfect match. And that's why we have to convince Julie. Unless you're having second thoughts are you?

JACK: Not for a second.

EVE: Alright, good. Well I'm going to go ahead and get her number for you right now.

JACK: Uh...you're going.... for me.... what....

EVE: Yes.

JACK: Huh, I get the dirty work.

SCENE THREE: JENNIFER RUNS BACK TO THE LOFT AND GOES INSIDE. SHE IS VERY ANGRY AND UPSET. FRANKIE COMES DOWN AND ASKS HER HOW IT WENT WITH JACK.

 

FRANKIE: Jen, how did it go, did you see Jack?

JENNIFER: Oh yeah, yeah, I saw Jack.

FRANKIE: Well what happened?

JENNIFER: I saw him but I wasn't able to tell him about Lawrence.

FRANKIE: Why not?

JENNIFER: Because Eve was there.

FRANKIE: Eve! Wait a minute, did she start something with you?

JENNIFER: No, she didn't start anything. She....

FRANKIE: What?

JENNIFER: She was in bed with Jack!

FRANKIE: What?

JENNIFER: Yes. I went there looking for Jack and there they were in bed together.

FRANKIE: No way. No, I ain't buyin...wait a minute, I hate to break this to you but she hates Jack.

JENNIFER: She hates Jack?

FRANKIE: Yeah.

JENNIFER: She married Jack!

FRANKIE: Married? Well what the hell did Jack say about all this?

JENNIFER: He was asleep.

FRANKIE: And you didn't wake him?

JENNIFER: No I should have but I couldn't. And I couldn't talk to him because she was there.

FRANKIE: What.... look I'll see you later. I'll see you in a little while.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute Frankie. Don't do this. I don't know what's going on.

 

FRANKIE LEAVES ANYWAY INSISTING ON FINDING OUT WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON.

SCENE FOUR: BACK AT THE PENTHOUSE, JACK OPENS THE DOOR TO JULIE. THE PLACE IS STILL A MESS WITH THE LEFT OVERS FROM THE WEDDING. JACK IS WEARING HIS PANTS AND SOCKS AND HIS SHIRT IS UNDONE OVER HIS UNDERSHIRT OR SINGLET.

 

JACK: Julie, please come right in. Thank you for coming over.

JULIE: Well the urgency in your voice piqued my curiosity. What's going on?

JACK: Ah.... could I get you a glass of champagne?

JULIE: Are we celebrating something Jack?

JACK: Ah, yes we certainly are. We're.... ah.... you know.... you know Julie there comes a time in a man's life when.... ah.... he finds himself alone and lonely and he's in need of company and companionship and very often in the strangest of circumstances....

JULIE: Jack.... is this your concept of a come-on?

JACK: No.... no, no. That's not it at all, not that you wouldn't be a fine catch indeed.

JULIE: Indeed!

JACK: Indeed but as a matter of fact, I'm already spoken for.

JULIE: My god! (Beat) You've done it. You married Eve!

JACK: How did you know that?

JULIE: Well she's been hitting me over the head with hints.

JACK: Oh, well then you know. I mean, you know.... ah.... how she feels about me and how I feel about her. And you approve. That's great. That is so great. That is....

JULIE: Hold it Jack. You don't think I'm quite that naive do you?

JACK: No.... no, no, no, no. You're not naive at.... no. I mean you're a very shrewd woman and you know that.... what a perfect arrangement this is.

JULIE: Arrangement, yes. Marriage, oh I'm not so sure. I think I know what true love looks like. It looked to me like you and Jennifer. I thought I saw it on Ernesto's cruise, later on the island and even a bit more profoundly at Lawrence's villa.

JACK: Heh.

JULIE: I don't think that's the kind of emotion that you just, shall we say, just turn off at a moment's notice.

JACK: Well sometimes that's just not enough.

JULIE: Are telling me you're not in love with Jennifer?

JACK: Yes, it's all over. It's over.

JULIE: Really. (Beat) And so you expect me to believe that now you love

Eve the way you loved Jennifer and you're going to be just as happy with Eve as you would have been with Jennifer.

JACK: No, no, you see there's different kinds of happiness. The kind of.... the kind of relationship that I have with Eve is going to make both Eve and myself happy.

JULIE: I know exactly what Eve expects to get out of this Jack. Darling, what's in it for you?

JACK: Well.... ah.... compatibility for one thing. I mean, I mean Eve and I are really one of a kind. I mean we're much better suited for each other than Jennifer and myself.

JULIE: Oh.... the devil you say.

JACK: No, I really mean that. I mean.... she really.... she makes me happy, Eve does. And I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know that that little I do just.... just kept Lawrence from taking over my paper.

JULIE: Oh, oh, I begin to see.

JACK: Oh not only that. You see.... you see.... my lovely bride has helped me put one over on Lawrence and I know that that will make you happy too because Lawrence has got way too much power in this town already. So.... so tell me.... you approve, right?

JULIE: I don't know Jack. I've got to think about this..

JACK: I don't have any time.

JULIE: Well I'm sorry. I don't make decisions without all of the information. What does Jennifer say about this?

JACK: Jennifer doesn't.... ah.... Jennifer doesn't know about this. I haven't told her.

JULIE: Well.... I guess you better tell her.

 

JULIE STARTS TO LEAVE.

 

JULIE: Because until you develop the strength of character to face her with this.... I ain't buying your marriage.

 

SHE WALKS OUT AND SLAMS THE DOOR.

SCENE FIVE: MEANWHILE, FRANKIE GOES TO WINGS TO CONFRONT EVE AND SHE SHOWS HIM THE MARRIAGE LICENSE. JULIE ARRIVES AT WINGS AND EVE DOES EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO PERSUADE HER THAT SHE LOVES JACK. JULIE TELLS EVE THAT SHE KNOWS ABOUT THE SPECTATOR.

SCENE SIX: JENNIFER IS LOOKING AT THE BRIDE DOLL AND FIREMAN DOLL THAT JACK GAVE HER AT CHRISTMAS. THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.

 

JENNIFER: Who is it?

JACK: It's Jack.

 

SHE THINKS FOR A MINUTE ABOUT WHETHER TO ANSWER THE DOOR BUT DECIDES TO GO AHEAD. SHE THROWS THE DOLLS IN THE HOPE CHEST AND RUSHES TO THE DOOR.

 

JACK: Look I know it's late but the light was on and I thought that I should come up and.... that we could....

 

SHE PUSHES THE DOOR OPEN.

 

JENNIFER: Hi.

JACK: (Peaking through the door, hoping Frankie is not there) Are you alone?

JENNIFER: Yes I am. What do you want?

JACK: Well I would like to come in and.... talk to you.

JENNIFER: Okay.

 

SHE WALKS AWAY FROM THE DOOR AND HE KNOWS THAT SHE IS VERY ANGRY. HE SHUTS THE DOOR AND ENTERS.

 

JACK: Okaaaay. (Beat) Let's get right down to the point. I know you were at my apartment and I know you saw Eve in bed with me and I would like to explain that.

JENNIFER: Look just tell me one thing, alright. (Beat) Is it true? Did you really marry Eve?

JACK: Yes I did!

JENNIFER: Why? (Beat) So why did you marry Eve, Jack?

JACK: You see we have a lot in common. We're both manipulating, scheming and conniving. We are...

JENNIFER: You don't love her so why did you marry her?

JACK: There are many different types of love Jennifer. There's the kind of love.... there's your average kind of love and then there's the kind of love that Eve and I have, which is....

JENNIFER: You're lying. You don't love her.

 

JACK LOOKS AT HER IN FRUSTRATION.

 

JENNIFER: You love me, remember. You love me, so why don't you tell me the truth.

JACK: Okay, here's the truth. You want to hear the truth? The truth is I needed her inheritance. Now I can stop Lawrence from taking over my paper.

JENNIFER: No! We both know that Eve has to be happily married in order to get that money.

JACK: We will both be very happy.

JENNIFER: Are you kidding me? Do you really believe that?

JACK: It doesn't matter what I believe. It doesn't even matter if she's happy. I KNOW THAT I'M NOT HAPPY WITH YOU. (Beat) I'LL NEVER BE HAPPY WITH YOU. I CAN NEVER BE WHO I AM. I HAVE TO BE SOMEONE ELSE. AND FOR ALL HER FAULTS, AT LEAST SHE ACCEPTS ME FOR WHO I AM. (Beat) I think I deserve that, don't you?

JENNIFER: Huh, uh. Yeah. I think you both deserve each other.

 

THEY ARE BOTH HURTING EACH OTHER.

 

JACK: Good, good. I'm glad that's settled now. (Beat) (Stops as he is about to walk out) One more thing. Why did you come to my apartment tonight?

JENNIFER: It doesn't really matter anymore. (Beat) Congratulations Jack. I hope that you are very happy because that's all I ever wanted for you.

 

JACK IS HURT TOO BUT THEY BOTH CONTINUE TO TRY AND BE STRONG.

 

JACK: Thank you.

 

HE WALKS TO THE DOOR AND PAUSES FOR A SECOND TO LOOK BACK AT HER BEFORE SLAMMING THE DOOR. INSIDE SHE IS ABOUT TO CRY AND OUTSIDE HE STOPS AND TRIES NOT TO FEEL THE HURT.

SCENE SEVEN: THE SHOW ENDS WITH NAT KING COLE SINGING SMILE AGAIN WHILE THE PEOPLE OF SALEM THINK OVER THEIR LIVES.

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you.

EVE LOOKS AT HER WEDDING RINGS WITH TEARS IN HER EYES.

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear maybe ever so near.

JENNIFER GETS THE DOLLS OUT AGAIN AND LOOKS AT THEM.

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worth while
If you just smile.

JACK PICKS UP THE BROKEN PICTURE OF JENNIFER THEN SEES THE CONFETTI AND STREAMERS ON THE BED. HE PICKS UP A HANDFUL AND SITS ON THE END OF THE BED THINKING.

That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying....

JACK THROWS THE CONFETTI IN THE AIR AND PICTURE FREEZES AS IT FLIES ABOVE HIM.
