oldEpisode Two-hundred-fifty-two: Jack
Tells "Eve" He Loves Her. As Jennifer
and Jack Continue to Work Together
to Get Lawrence, They Get Even Closer.

[Air late February 1991]

SCENE ONE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE NOW WORKING HARD TO GET ALL THE INFORMATION THEY CAN ON THE TRAIN. SHE HAS GONE TO JACK'S PENTHOUSE SO THAT THEY CAN WORK IN PRIVATE. JACK HAS JUST FINISHED A PHONE CALL.

JACK: That was Francoise. He found Eve but they're in Florida. They're not going.... they're not going to be back here till he can beg, drag or otherwise haul her on board a plane. Till that time we're supposed to keep our mouths shut.

JENNIFER: Oh that's just great. Like we don't have enough problems, now we have to cover for Eve.

JACK: Well.... well let's not lose our heads, alright. Nobody.... knows that she tried to leave town let alone try to leave the country. Let's not worry. I mean nobody's even looking for Eve.

THE DOORBELL RINGS.

JACK: Who is it?

BRAIN: It's me, Brian Scofield. I'm looking for Eve.

JACK AND JENNIFER TURN AND LOOK AT EACH OTHER.

JENNIFER: You were saying.

THE DOORBELL RINGS AGAIN.

BRIAN: Jack, you didn't forget about me, did you?

JACK: Ah.... no, no. Just a second.

HE GRABS JENNIFER BY THE HAND AND STARTS PULLING HER.

JACK: Here.... get in the bedroom.

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: Get in.... you've got to get out of here. He can't find you here. I'm a married man.

JENNIFER: I know you're a married man Jack. You don't have to remind me that you're married.

BRIAN: Open up!

JACK: Ah.... just a moment. I've got a bun in the oven.

JENNIFER: Oh that's brilliant Jack. "You've got a bun in the oven?"

JACK: Look, this way. Come, this way. Just come this way and don't come out until I give you a high sign, okay.

JENNIFER: Okay.

JACK: Alright, stay there. Don't.... don't...

JACK HURRIES TO THE DOOR STUMBLING ON THE WAY.

BRIAN: Hi.

JACK: Brian Scofield, come in. What brings you here?

BRIAN: I already mentioned that. Where's Eve?

JACK: Eve?

BRIAN: Yeah, your wife, the one you're married to, Eve.

JACK: Oh Eve.... ah.... I don't know.

BRIAN: You don't know.

JACK: Yes.... I do know. She went to work.... to Wings.... to work.

BRIAN: To Wings, are you sure about that? It's funny because I just went over there and if she's at Wings.... let me use your phone okay.

JACK: No, no, no. Actually, you know what, she didn't go to Wings, she went to Shane's. She went to her father's house.

BRIAN: Are you positive?

JACK: Oh absolutely positive.

BRIAN: Well that's strange too because I just came back from there not ten minutes ago and she was no where to be found there, really.

JACK: You know, I positively heard her wrong. I think what she really said was she went to the mall.

BRIAN: Eve.... Deveraux went to the mall?

JACK: You're right. I don't buy it either. Um, the truth of the matter is, I'm protecting her. Can you blame me for that?

BRIAN: No I can't blame you. Where is she Jack?

JACK: Look, the girl is sick. She's upset. She's not eating, she's not drinking, she's not sleeping. I don't think she could take another little interrogation of yours.

BRIAN: Jack, just tell me where she is, please.

JACK: She's.... in the bedroom.

BRIAN: Well, um, why don't you go and get her for me?

JACK: I'm sorry that's really.... that's out of the question.

BRIAN: That's out of the question. Well I guess you leave me with no choice then.

JACK: Oh good, I'm glad you see it my way. I'll just....

JACK HEADS FOR THE DOOR BUT BRIAN WALKS STRAIGHT INTO THE BEDROOM. JACK PANICS AND RUNS AFTER HIM LEAPING OVER THE COUCH ON HIS WAY.

JACK: Hey, wait! Wait a minute, wait!

SCENE TWO: BRIAN WALKS INTO THE BEDROOM AND SEE SOMEBODY UNDER THE COVERS.

BRIAN: Eve, are you alright there?

WAIT A MINUTE! JACK CATCHES UP WITH HIM.

JACK: Who.... who are you talking to?

BRIAN: What are you talking about? I'm talking to your wife. I'm talking to Eve.

A HAND WAVES FROM UNDER THE PINK SATIN SHEETS.

JACK: Heheheh, well that's the little woman for you. If she doesn't want to face reality, she just blocks it out.

BRIAN: Yes. That's great. Excuse me. Eve this is Detective Scofield here and I know you're not feeling well.... obviously she's not feeling well.... so we need to talk. Take the blanket off, Eve.

THE HAND HOLDS TIGHT ONTO THE BLANKET AND SLAPS BRIAN'S HAND.

BRIAN: Ouch, she slapped my hand.

JACK: Yes I know.

BRIAN: She....

JACK: Look I'm no expert in this area but don't you think it'd be a bad idea to force someone who's in a such a psychologically altered state into talking? I mean she could lose it. She could just go nuts, develop multiple personalities and do you think we're really ready for the "three faces of Eve?"

BRIAN: Wow. I didn't think of that. You have a point there Jack. Really a point. It's amazing. You know I really should talk to Eve. I really have to....

JACK: No, no, no, okay. Alright, if it has to be done, let me do it. I mean there's nobody like the groom to make the bride open up. If you know what I mean.

BRIAN: I have no idea what you're talking about Jack. It's amazing me as we speak.

JACK GOES OVER TO THE BED AND LEANS OVER TO TALK TO "EVE." JENNIFER'S FACE IS PEEPING OUT OF THE SHEETS AWAY FROM BRIAN SO HE CANNOT SEE.

JACK: It's okay. Okay. Ah.... ah.... hello there. It's.... it's me.... Jack. Don't worry, nobody's going to hurt you Lamb Chop.

JENNIFER GRINS AND MOUTHS THE WORDS "LAMB CHOP."
oldEp252B

JACK: Ah.... look, we know you're scared and nobody out here blames you because let's face it, this is a hell of a mess. I'm just trying to say that if you hide from your problems.... you'll never get past them. So I just want you to know that if you face up to your problems, I'll be right there next to you because I believe in you and.... I love you.
oldEp252C
JENNIFER REALIZES THAT JACK IS REALLY TALKING TO HER, JENNIFER, AND NOT "EVE," AND GETS EMOTIONAL, REALIZING THAT JACK STILL CARES FOR HER.
oldEp252D

BRIAN:
Wow, that was quite a speech you made to.... Eve, Jack. I'm surprised she didn't have a response.

JACK: Ah, don't you have any kind of.... response, darling. Anything to say?

JENNIFER WHISPERS A REPLY.

JENNIFER: I love you too Jack.

JACK IS HAPPY BUT SCARED WITH BRIAN THERE.

JACK: Ah.... did I detect a faint utterance from betwixt the sheets, huh?

JENNIFER COUGHS.

JACK: Sick, see. Need we say anymore. Enough said, huh?

JACK STANDS UP BUT BRIAN IS NOT CONVINCED.

BRIAN: Great. Well I hate to spoil the fun here. We're having a lot of fun. But the show's over. Here we go.

HE PULLS BACK THE SHEETS AND JENNIFER SITS UP AND SCREAMS.

BRIAN: Eve, look at that. That's great.

JACK: How did you know that it wasn't Eve.

BRIAN: Well if it was Eve, you would have never said I love you to her.

JACK AND JENNIFER LOOK AT EACH OTHER AND FEEL VERY AWKWARD.

BRIAN: Okay, let's get down to business here. I need to know where Eve is. Where is Eve, Jack?

JACK HELPS HER OUT OF THE BED. THEY STAND VERY CLOSE TO EACH OTHER, TRYING, UNSUCCESSFULLY, TO FOOL BRIAN.

JACK: Ah.... well would you believe that Eve is ah.... ah.... ah.... at the library?

BRIAN: No.

JACK: Would you believe Eve is at....
oldEp252E

JENNIFER: Church.

JACK: ... at the church.

BRIAN: Look, look, you guys are driving me nuts here.

JACK: Would you believe....

BRIAN: Listen, I'm going to be very clear here okay or as clear as I'm able to be. I need to speak with Eve and I need to speak with Eve tonight. Now I'm going to be in my office until about nine o'clock. Now if Eve comes there before then, we'll forget about this whole thing. But if she doesn't, you two are in a lot of trouble.

JENNIFER: You know maybe Eve's not guilty.

BRIAN: Well the evidence says she is.

JENNIFER: Well sometimes things change you know.

BRIAN: "Sometimes things change....?" look what are you guys talking about here? Please tell me what you know, please?

JACK: Well, what do you mean what do we know? What do you know, you're the policeman. We only know what we read in the papers, what we print.... sometimes.

BRIAN: That's great but what is all this.... what if Eve didn't do it talk.... what is this?

JENNIFER: It is speculation.

JACK: There you have it, it's speculation.

JENNIFER: It is speculation because we both know Eve and we're not sure she's capable of murder.

JACK: Yes, she may be capable of lying, cheating, man eating, poking of fudge into the bottoms of those little chocolates but killing a man, I think not!

BRIAN: That's incredible the way you speak of your wife like that. You know it brings me to mind of Donald and Ivana, actually.

JACK: I wouldn't even mention them names in the same breath as ours. I mean, Eve is plastic free and proud of it.

JENNIFER RAISES HER EYEBROWS AT THIS.

BRIAN: "Plastic free....?" I'm sure she is. Look, listen I'm going to be in my office until nine o'clock and if Eve comes, that's going to be great. But if she doesn't, you guys are going to be in his and hers cells.

BRIAN WALKS TO THE DOOR THEN STOPS.

BRIAN: Oh you too, Marla!

HE LEAVES AND JACK TELLS JENNIFER TO BE QUIET UNTIL HE IS OUT OF EARSHOT.

JENNIFER: I can't believe....

JACK: Ssssshhhhh!

THEY HEAR THE DOOR CLOSE.

JACK: Oh boy, I'm so glad he's gone.

JENNIFER: Wow, I didn't realize you were so anxious to be alone.

JENNIFER CLIMBS ON THE BED AND JACK SITS RIGHT ON THE END AND SLIPS STRAIGHT OFF THE SLIPPERY SATIN SHEETS AND HAS TO HOLD ON TO STAY SEATED.

JACK: Look... damn sheets. (Beat) If you are referring to what I said before when you were under the sheets and were supposed to be Eve, then.... ah....
oldEp252F

JENNIFER:
Then what?

JACK: Then ah.... well I was just...

HE SLIPS OFF AGAIN AND SHE GRABS FOR HIM. HE ENDS UP KNEELING AT THE END OF THE BED AND HOLDING HER HANDS.

JENNIFER: Jack!

JACK: Damn these sheets. (Beat) Ah.... I was just saying what had to be said to convince Scofield that you were Eve.

JENNIFER: Right. Well of course, why else would you say those things?

JACK: Ah.... well that really doesn't matter now. What's important is that.... I mean I don't think he's as stupid as he looks, alright. If Eve shows up tonight I think he's still going to be looking for the reason why we're doing this. That means we have to work fast.

JENNIFER: Alright, alright, let's work.

JACK: That means.... not.... not here, not here.

JENNIFER: Jack, what's wrong with working here?

JACK: There is more room in my office and.... ah.... that's where we're going to meet, in the office.

JENNIFER: Alright, I just have to....

SHE CLIMBS OFF THE BED MUCH TO JACK'S RELIEF.

JENNIFER: I just have to stop by the studio and talk to Dan and make sure it's okay for me to do this whole train story.

JACK: That's great, great. I'll see you when I see you.

JENNIFER: Okay.

SHE LEAVES AND JACK SIGHS WITH RELIEF TO HAVE HER OUT OF HIS BEDROOM. HE SITS BACK DOWN ON THE END OF THE BED AGAIN AND SLIPS STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR.

JACK: Damn slipper sheets!

SCENE THREE: JENNIFER GOES TO SEE WHITNEY BAKER AND TELLS HER THAT THINGS ARE IMPROVING BETWEEN THEM BECAUSE OF THE WAY HE SPOKE TO HER TODAY. SHE SAYS SHE KNOWS JACK STILL LOVES HER BUT SHE IS STILL A BIT UNSURE BECAUSE SHE FEELS SAD THAT THINGS MAY NEVER BE QUITE THE SAME AGAIN.

SCENE FOUR: JACK MEANWHILE HAS GONE TO HIS OFFICE AND HE IS LOOKING OVER THE TRAIN'S SCHEDULE. THERE IS KNOCK AT THE DOOR AND HE HIDES THE BROCHURE.

JACK: Ah, ah, Vern, come on in, door's unlocked.

MELISSA ENTERS.

JACK: Ah Vern, you've never looked so lovely.

MELISSA: Thank you Mr. Deveraux. Let's hope you're as free with your favors as you are with your compliments.

JACK: Well I suppose the correct response to that is, your wish is my command.

MELISSA: The Spectator ran a feature article about a week ago....

JACK: Huh, uh.

MELISSA: .... on this old fashioned cross country train ride. Do you think you could find it for me?

JACK IS SUSPICIOUS.

JACK: Why would you be interested in some tired old train?

MELISSA: Heh... I just got a job singing on that tired old train.

JACK: No, no, forget about it. Forget all about it. Forget it, forget it. No.

MELISSA: Excuse me.

JACK: Look, Madonna doesn't belt on the buses, Streisand doesn't sing in the subways. Transportation and showbiz do not mix.

MELISSA: Okay, what's going on?

JACK: Going on, nothing's going on. I just have a sincere interest in your career tracks, that's all. That's all.

MELISSA: Why don't you want me to go on that train, Jack?

JACK: Well, if the truth be told, I'm going to be working very extensively on that train along with.... Miss Horton.

MELISSA: (Smiling) Does your wife know?

JACK: There's nothing for my wife to know. It's a couple of reporters working on a story, that's all.

MELISSA: Hmmm, you're probably going to tell me this is none of my business Jack, but I know Eve and I know how she feels about Jennifer and I'm having a little bit of trouble believing that she's just going to let the two of you go off together.

JACK: You know something, you are right. It's none of your business.

MELISSA: Fair enough but if this does mean that the two of you are getting back together again, I'm glad. Bye Jack.

SCENE FIVE: BACK AT THE HOSPITAL, JENNIFER IS LEAVING WHITNEY'S OFFICE WHEN SHE RUNS INTO ALICE WHO NOTICES HOW HAPPY SHE LOOKS.

ALICE: Hi darling, what are you doing here? Are you doing a story?

JENNIFER: Yeah actually I am doing a story. It's sort of a love story.

ALICE: Oh that's my favorite kind.

JENNIFER: Yeah mine too.

ALICE: Jennifer if I didn't know you better I'd say you were in a honest to goodness good mood.

JENNIFER: And grandma, if I didn't know me better, I'd say you were right.

SCENE SIX: MELISSA GOES TO VISIT BRIAN -- THEY HAVE BEEN GETTING VERY CLOSE RECENTLY. SHE TELLS HIM THAT JACK AND JENNIFER ARE GOING ON THIS TRAIN TRIP, AND THAT JACK ACTED STRANGELY, TRYING TO GET HER NOT TO GO. THIS MAKES BRIAN EVEN MORE SUSPICIOUS THAT THEY ARE HIDING SOMETHING.
