SCENE ONE: IT IS VICTOR AND CARLY'S WEDDING DAY AND JACK IS WAITING AT THE LOFT FOR JENNIFER TO FINISH GETTING READY. HE SEES HIS REFLECTION IN A MIRROR AND BEGINS TO PRACTICE TELLING JENNIFER HE LOVES HER.
JACK: I love you.... I love you... I love you.... no, no, no, not you. Who am I talking to? Of course, it would be easier to talk to you.
HE KEEPS LOOKING AT HIMSELF AND SMILING CYNICALLY.JACK: You know I love you, so why don't we get married and get this thing over with?
HE NODS AT HIMSELF IN SATISFACTION.JENNIFER: Jack?
JACK: Then again, we better forget it. I'm already married not to mention spoken for.... somewhat.
JENNIFER COMES DOWNSTAIRS.JENNIFER: Jack, are you talking to Harper and Duke again?
JACK: No, no, just the competition.
JENNIFER: What?
JACK: Oh, never mind. Why aren't you already gussied up?
JENNIFER: Well I thought that I would at Victor's. Are you ready to go?
JACK: About as ready as I'll ever be.
JENNIFER: What does that mean?
JACK: It means that I'm not exactly looking forward to another wedding. I mean after all, with my imminent divorce from Eve, I'll be a three time loser. Let's talk about this for a minute. Your close personal friend is Carly. Eve, my wife, is already planning to go with her new soul mate Francoise. There is no reason for me to go. Really it's not going to break Victor's heart if I don't show up.
JENNIFER: You know, it's not going to break Victor's heart but you are going to this wedding.
JACK: There's no reason....
JENNIFER: You are going to this wedding, Jack. And there's no time to discuss it. So let's get in the car and you can tell me all the reasons why you don't want to go to the wedding on the way there.
JACK: Fine, alright. Let's go. I can hardly wait. Is there anything you haven't forgotten?
JENNIFER: Yeah, you carry my dress because it's heavy and my hands are full.
JACK: Certainly, certainly, if you want to trust me with it.
JENNIFER: Of course I trust you Jack. Why wouldn't I trust you?
JACK: Because there's no....
JACK PICKS UP THE DRESS OFF THE KITCHEN BENCH AND KNOCKS THE JADE PLANT ONTO THE FLOOR. THE POT BREAKS AND THE PLANT IS LYING ON THE FLOOR ALONG WITH THE ENGAGEMENT RING.JACK: OOOOOOH!
JENNIFER: What happened Jack? (Beat) OOOOOOH!
SHE LOOKS IN HORROR AT HIM AND HE LOOKS BACK KNOWING THAT SHE IS VERY UPSET.
JENNIFER: I can't believe this happened Jack. This is terrible.
JACK: This is a dead plant, is what it is.JENNIFER: No it wasn't. This our plant.
JACK: Listen, listen, you go to the nursery tomorrow. You get yourself a new plant, something that is much bigger and hopefully a lot healthier.
JENNIFER: It's not the same Jack.
JACK: Something maybe with some big tropical leaves, remind you of some big tropical adventure or something like that and.... ah....
HE PICKS UP THE RING.JACK: .... I'll just hold onto this. How about that?
JENNIFER: Well what are we going to do about the plant?
JACK: We're going to get out of here, that's what we're going to do. We have to leave it because we're already late.
JENNIFER: We can't just leave it.
JACK: We're already late. Now you told me that yourself.
JENNIFER: I can't just leave it here to let it die....
JACK: We have to go.
JENNIFER: .... on the floor like that Jack.
JACK: Alright, alright, just don't get emotional about it. I know it's a wedding and all that.
HE PICKS UP A COFFEE CUP AND BENDS DOWN TO TRY AND RECOVER THE PLANT.JACK: I'll just play Mr. Green Jeans or.... something. There it's all fixed up. Don't I hear jubilation coming from that side of the room, huh.
HE STUFFS THE PLANT, A BIT OF SOIL AND SOME BROKEN PIECES OF THE POT INTO THE CUP.JACK: There it's looking much better.
JENNIFER: You know what Jack?
JACK: What?
JENNIFER: That's what I like about you.
JACK: What, I can make a great mess?
JENNIFER: No, you know how to pick up the pieces.
JACK: Right!
JENNIFER: You know when something's not working out, you always find a way.
JACK: Let's not forget whose dress it was that started all this. This was a mass collaboration, one of our best to date. How is that?
HE SHOWS HER THE PLANT.JENNIFER: Jack it's not good. You've just got to fix it around the roots. You didn't do this right.
JACK: Oh look who became a botanist when I wasn't looking.
JENNIFER: Just let me take care of it Jack.
JACK: Alright, you're the expert. You know something, experts, in my expert opinion, take themselves and their work a little too seriously.
JENNIFER: No that's not true. I don't think so.
JACK: It is true. Come on, it's time to go, alright. Just leave it where it is. Time to go.
JENNIFER: Jack I don't know if I'm ready.
JACK: You're absolutely ready. Come on, just get everything out there, okay. Got everything? Okay, here we go.
HE HUSTLES HER OUT THE DOOR.JENNIFER: I don't know if I should leave it like that.
JACK: I think you should leave it. I think it's time to get in the elevator, alright. Now.... just....
HE RUNS BACK INSIDE.JENNIFER: Where are you going Jack?
JACK: My keys! We've got so much going on I almost forgot.... ah....
HE LOOKS ACROSS AT THE PLANT FOR A SECOND.JACK: and with the.... ah.... plant fiasco.
HE PICKS UP THE PLANT IN THE CUP AND DUSTS IT OFF THEN HIDES IT UNDER HIS JACKET.JENNIFER: The elevator's coming.
JACK: I know the elevator's coming. I know, I know.
HE KNOCKS THE PLANT AGAIN AND PUSHES IT BACK IN THE CUP.JENNIFER: Jack, where are you?
JACK: I'm.... I'm coming, really.
HE SLAMS THE DOOR SHUT AND SIGHS. THEN HE GLANCES DOWN AT THE PLANT.JACK: Get in there.
SCENE TWO: JACK AND JENNIFER ARRIVE AT VICTOR'S AND GO UP TO CARLY'S BEDROOM.CARLY: Oh come in.
JACK: Oh sorry about that.
CARLY: That's okay.
JACK PUTS THE DRESS ON THE BED.JENNIFER: Well what did you remember that you forgot. I brought something borrowed.
CARLY: Well what do you think of this for something blue?
CARLY HOLDS A DOUBLE STRING OF PEARLS WITH A DEEP BLUE SAPPHIRE SURROUNDED BY DIAMONDS IN THE CENTER.JENNIFER: Oh my gosh! That is beautiful with that big blue sapphire and all those pearls.
CARLY: Oh I love it.
JACK: Did he....
CARLY: Victor. Victor gave it to me.
JACK: Oh I guess he didn't get it in the street then.
CARLY: Of course he didn't get it in the street.
JENNIFER: Well where's the dress? I want to see the dress.
CARLY: It's over there. Help yourself.
JACK: Oh no, don't, don't touch the dress.
JACK PULLS JENNIFER AWAY FROM THE DRESS.CARLY: Jack, it's okay.
JACK: No, it's not okay, believe me.
JENNIFER: Jack, what's your problem?
JACK: I don't have a problem. You're the one with the problem.
HE HOLDS UP HER HANDS WHICH ARE STILL DIRTY FROM THE PLANT.CARLY: Should I ask?
JENNIFER: No.
JACK: No, just go wash your hands. Come on.
JENNIFER: I'll be right back.
CARLY: Okay.
JACK: That's a good idea.
JACK WALKS OUT WITH JENNIFER.JACK: Alright.
CARLY: Jack, where are you going?
JACK: Um, I just have an errand to run. I'll be back.... I'll be back in time for the ritual.
CARLY: You promise?
JACK: I love weddings. I really do. I'll be back.
CARLY SMILES AT HIM AS HE LEAVES BUT HE POPS HIS HEAD BACK IN AS SHE IS LOOKING AT THE PEARLS.JACK: Oh and I have a close personal friend who's a jeweler if you want me to have that checked?
CARLY: Nah.
JACK: Alright.
CARLY: Okay.
JACK LEAVES.
SCENE THREE: PREPARING FOR THE WEDDING, JENNIFER AND CARLY TALK. JENNIFER STILL WONDERS IF CARLY IS MARRYING VICTOR FOR THE WRONG REASONS. WHEN THEY WERE YOUNG THEY ALWAYS TALKED ABOUT THE MEN OF THEIR DREAMS. JENNIFER SAYS THAT THOUGH JACK IS NOT EXACTLY WHAT SHE INVISIONED BACK THEN, HE *IS* THE MAN OF HER DREAMS, HE IS MUCH MORE THAN SHE DREAMED. SHE TELLS CARLY THAT CARLY ALWAYS DREAMED OF MARRYING A PIRATE, THAT SHE SHOULD WAIT FOR REALLY LOVE, LIKE SHE DID WITH JACK.
SCENE FOUR: JENNIFER GOES DOWN TO FIND JACK. EVE AND FRANKIE ARE THERE ALONG WITH ALICE, JULIE AND MOST OF SALEM. AS JENNIFER IS TALKING TO EVE AND FRANKIE, JACK APPEARS, GUIDING THE MINISTER.JACK: Right this.... right this way Monsignor. Alright, now we can start everybody. Right this way., sir. Poor soul was lost in the men's room. That way, right up to the podium.
JENNIFER: Jack where have you been?
JACK: Oh, I was.... ah.... I just had an errand to run. Figured we had a little bit of time. So, when does the shindig start?
JENNIFER: Well any minute. I mean everybody's ready, everything's ready.
JACK: Great.
SCENE FIVE: MEANWHILE JULIE, ALICE AND TOM ARE TRYING TO STALL VICTOR IN THE HOPE THAT CARLY CHANGES HER MIND AND STAYS WITH BO. HOWEVER ISABELLA COMES TO SAY CARLY IS READY AND THE GUESTS ARE ASKED TO TAKE THEIR SEATS.ISABELLA: Okay it's almost time. If you want to find a good seat, you better hurry.
JACK: Alright, I'll see you when the deed is done.
JENNIFER: We're ready.
JACK: Right.
JENNIFER RUNS OFF TO SEE CARLY.JACK: Come now my Pea Blossom.
EVE: The second it's over Frankie, alright.
FRANKIE: I promise. Hahahahah.... oh Jack.
JACK: Francoise, what you don't trust me for a moment alone with my wife.
JACK LOOKS SURPRISED THAT FRANKIE IS LAUGHING AT HIM.JACK: (To Eve) Come on. You're makin' us look bad.
EVE: Let's just sit, Jack.
JACK: Alright, you make my knees tremble too.
THEY SIT TOGETHER UP NEAR THE FRONT ON THE RIGHT OF THE AISLE.
SCENE SIX: THE MUSIC BEGINS AND SHAWN D WALKS DOWN THE AISLE WITH THE RING FOLLOWED BY ISABELLA. THEN JENNIFER BEGINS TO WALK DOWN AND JACK GETS A BIG GRIN ON HIS FACE.EVE: Ooooooh, look who's coming.
JACK: Please, a little bit of decorum.
EVE: Oh give me a break Jack. You have so much love and flowers in your eyes.
JACK: Please.JENNIFER GIVES JACK A HUGE SMILE AND HE LOOKS AT HER EXACTLY AS EVE DESCRIBES, FULL OF LOVE AND ROMANCE. THE MUSIC BEGINS FOR CARLY BUT SHE DOES NOT APPEAR. THE ORCHESTRA STRIKES UP AGAIN BUT STILL NO CARLY. JACK BEGINS TO LOOK AT HIS WATCH AND WONDER.JACK: Well....
THE MUSIC STARTS UP AGAIN AND THIS TIME SHE BEGINS DOWN THE AISLE. SHE AND VICTOR ARE MARRIED WITH BO AS BEST MAN. AFTER THE CEREMONY BO WALKS BACK DOWN THE AISLE WITH JENNIFER FOLLOWED BY FRANKIE AND ISABELLA.
SCENE SEVEN: AT THE RECEPTION, JACK, JENNIFER AND EVE ALL SIT ON THE SOFA WATCHING WHAT IS GOING ON. JACK CHATS TO ISABELLA. CARLY GOES OUT TO THE GARDEN AND THERE SHE MEETS BO WHO ASKS HER WHY SHE MARRIED VICTOR AND HE KISSES HER. BO'S DATE, EMMY IS VERY JEALOUS OF CARLY AND SHE DECIDES TO POISON HER. INSTEAD BO DRINKS THE POISON AND NO ONE KNOWS. A VERY DRUNK BO MAKES A SPEECH AT THE RECEPTION AND THEN LEAVES TO GO HOME.
SCENE EIGHT: CARLY THROWS THE BOUQUET AND EMMY CATCHES IT. THEN VICTOR THROWS THE GARTER AND IT LANDS ON JACK'S SHOULDER.AND THEN FALLS TO THE FLOOR.JACK: What the hell.... what the hell was that?
JENNIFER: Jack.
JACK: Who's throwing these things? It seems everytime I turn up at one of these things they keep throwing them.
JENNIFER: Jack, you caught the garter.
JACK: No, I didn't catch the garter. No, no, no, this is not an omen. I don't believe in omens.JENNIFER: (Reluctantly) Neither do I.
JACK: Good, good. I tell you what, why don't you just.... why don't you hang onto that.
JENNIFER: I thought you said you don't believe in omens.
JACK: No, I don't. But this could hold up your bobbie socks or.... something. You know.
SHE GRINS AT HIM.
SCENE NINE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARRIVE BACK TO THE LOFT.JENNIFER: Now you see Jack, that wasn't really as bad as you thought it was going to be, was it? No.
JACK: Yeah, yeah, right. We did.... we should have walked home with a door prize.
JENNIFER: Heheh.
JACK BEGINS TO LOOK AROUND THE ROOM.JENNIFER: What's the matter with you Jack, what are you looking at?
JACK: Something I've noticed. I think.... someone's been in here, something's different.JENNIFER: Oh come on Jack, the place has not changed since this afternoon.
JACK: I wouldn't be so sure about that.
JENNIFER: You did something. What did you do?
JACK PUTS HIS HANDS UP TO SURRENDER AND SAY IT WAS NOT HE.JENNIFER: Jack, you....
SHE LOOKS AT THE TABLE AND THE JADE PLANT IS THERE IN A NEW POT WITH THE ENGAGEMENT RING. SHE PICKS UP THE PLANT.JENNIFER: Oh my gosh, Jack. That's where you disappeared to earlier. That's what you did. You went to the nursery, didn't you?
JACK: Why would I want to go to a nursery with a bunch of screaming little kids and their.... oh you mean that kind of nursery with the.... thing.
JENNIFER: Yes Jack, this kind of nursery. (Beat) Thank you Jack.
SHE GIVES HIM A BIG HUG.JACK: For what, a little clay pot.
JENNIFER: No, you gave me more than that. You gave me back my hope.
JACK: Your hope. Your hope for what?
JENNIFER: For our future.
JACK: Oh....
SHE WALKS BACK TO HIM AND GIVES HIM ANOTHER HUG AND HE RAPS HIS ARMS AROUND HER.JACK: .... in that case.
THEY BOTH SMILE.
