SCENE ONE: LAWRENCE HAS JUST WALKED INTO A CELEBRATION PARTY AT WINGS AND STATED THAT HE IS FREE.

 

JENNIFER: What are you doing here? How did you get out of jail?

JACK: I believe it's called being out on bail.

LAWRENCE: Like I said, I'm a free man, not a man out on bail. But Jennifer does raise an interesting question, one that I think should be addressed.

JENNIFER: I don't want to hear it.

 

JENNIFER WALKS OUT.

 

JACK: Right.... right.

SCENE TWO: JACK HAS FOLLOWED HER DOWN TO THE PIER.

 

JENNIFER: I can't believe this. I can't believe that Lawrence is getting away again. I don't believe there is anybody who can stop him.

JACK: Ah, I think there is. I think it's us.

JENNIFER: How is that Jack? How are we supposed to stop Lawrence if the ISA couldn't? I don't know what we're supposed to do anymore.

JACK: Well.... knowing you, you'll probably be facing up to him soon and knowing me I'll.... I'll probably be there to.... be there.

JENNIFER: Well I hope you have some ideas how to make it happen because I'm about out.

JACK: I didn't say I had any ideas. I just said the answer might be right in front of us for all we know.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute, wait a minute. This is all part of that thing that you're up to, isn't it Jack?

JACK: The thing? I don't know what thing you're talking about.

JENNIFER: The thing, the thing you wouldn't tell me at Lawrence's villa, that's it isn't it?

JACK: I think we should talk about it later.

JENNIFER: No, we should talk about it now. What is it?

JACK: Alright, let's talk about it right now. I think Lawrence has a video tape of the two of you from that night.

JENNIFER IS SHOCKED.

 

JENNIFER: A video tape?

JACK: Yes, a video tape. I didn't tell you before but there was a part of the wall in Lawrence's villa in his bedroom that had been replastered with the perfect vantage point of that bed. Ah, now I talked to Lila and she seems to think there may have been a camera there. Interestingly enough, Lawrence left the villa and came to Salem with a box full of video tapes.

 

JENNIFER IS VERY UPSET AND ALMOST CRYING.

 

JACK: Look I didn't want to tell you this way. I want it to.... I wanted it to help.

JENNIFER: It can help if there is a tape. I mean how do we know that Lawrence had that camera going that night?

JACK: Well once again according to Lila, Lawrence has.... well he has cameras running around the clock. I mean it's part of his security system.

JENNIFER: But why would he keep it? Why.... why wouldn't he destroy any evidence that he had against himself Jack?

JACK: Ordinarily that.... that' would make sense but you have to remember that we're dealing with somebody who's.... he works out of the ordinary.

JENNIFER: Jack, why didn't you tell me about this before?

JACK: I didn't want to get your hopes up. I didn't want you to count on something that mightn't happen, that's all.

JENNIFER: Well if that tape does exist, we have to find it.

JACK: Alright.... we will.

JENNIFER: You're right, we will. As long as we're together we will.

SCENE THREE: JACK AND JENNIFER GO BACK TO WINGS TO FIND OUT WHY LAWRENCE IS FREE. IT APPEARS THAT GREGORY, HIS ASSISTANT, HAS BEEN CHARGED INSTEAD. JENNIFER GETS FED UP LISTENING TO LAWRENCE TALK ABOUT HIS INNOCENCE AND HOW KIMBERLY STICKS UP FOR HIM.

 

JENNIFER: No Lawrence, that is not.... let go of me Jack.

 

JACK TRIES TO STOP JENNIFER ATTACKING LAWRENCE.

 

JACK: This is.... this is....

JENNIFER: Their not doing anything. You're the one who's always destroying everything.

JACK: This is not the time or the place.

JENNIFER: I want to go home.... right now.

ALICE: Jennifer darling are you alright?

JENNIFER: Yes I'm fine.

JACK: I'm sure she'll be fine.

ALICE: Alright, will you take her home?

JACK: Certainly.

ALICE: Thank you. This way.

 

JACK ESCORTS JENNIFER OUT OF WINGS.

SCENE FOUR: BACK AT THE LOFT.

 

JENNIFER: I mean it's just amazing.... it's amazing how Lawrence seems to worm his way out of everything.

JACK: It shouldn't be for too much longer.

JENNIFER: Well I hope you're right about that.

JACK: What do you mean hope I'm right? I thought we were on the trail of the secret weapon?

JENNIFER: Secret weapon?

JACK: Is this doubt I'm hearing? You said you were ready to go look for that tape.

JENNIFER: I am and I still want to, I do.

JACK: I'm glad we're in agreement.

JENNIFER: So am I.

JACK: I mean a little bit of agreement makes teamwork go a long way. Teamwork you know, my brains and your persistence. With it we should be able to track down that tape.

JENNIFER: I know and you're right. You're right, we will.

JACK: Right. (Beat) Well now that that's all taken care of, I'll be going.

 

JACK WALKS TOWARDS THE DOOR BUT IT'S OBVIOUS HE DOES NOT WANT TO LEAVE AND SHE DOES NOT WANT HIM TO.

 

JENNIFER: Jack wait, I.... hold on a second. I just.... I.... ah.... I just wanted to say goodnight.

JACK: Goodnight.

JENNIFER: Goodnight.

 

SHE LOOKS DISAPPOINTED.

 

JACK: Yes, you need some sleep. (Beat) Goodnight.

 

SHE CLOSES THE DOOR AND SIGHS.

SCENE FIVE: LATER AFTER SHE ISCHANGED FOR BED, SHE HEARS A KNOCK ON THE DOOR. JACK IS STANDING THERE.

 

JENNIFER: Hi!

JACK: Hi.

JENNIFER SMILES AND IS REALLY HAPPY JUST LIKE JACK IS.

 

JENNIFER: You're back.

JACK: Yes, just like the Cat in the Hat. Actually I've been downstairs all this time. Couldn't get my damn car started.

JENNIFER: You've been down there all this time with your car?

JACK: Yes, I was working on it with my own two hands.

HE PICKS UP THE PHONE AND STARTS TO DIAL.

 

JENNIFER: Really? That's amazing how you didn't get any grease on yourself if you were working on the car.

JACK: Yes, I'm very clean. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to call the auto service place and get a little bit of.... service. Just take a moment.... a second. (Beat) Hi there, this is Jack Deveraux. I'm having a bit of car trouble and I was wondering if you could come over and service it. It's.... ah.... (Beat).... wait a minute what do you mean? What do you mean you can't.... what kind of an auto service is this? Do you know who you're dealing with?

 

JENNIFER GRABS THE PHONE FROM HIM.

 

JENNIFER: Jack.... Jack you can't yell at....

JACK: Listen, my name is Jack Deveraux and I....

JENNIFER: I'll take care of it.

JACK: No, no, you don't have to.... just hang up, hang up.

 

HANG UP. THEY STRUGGLE WITH THE PHONE AND SHE WINS.

 

JENNIFER: Jack, I'll give them the address and it will be fine.

 

SHE PUTS THE PHONE TO HER EAR.

 

JENNIFER: Hello, I would like to....

 

SUDDENLY A VOICE COMES OVER THE LINE.

 

VOICE: The time at the tone is 9.52 and ten seconds.

 

JENNIFER HANGS UP AND SMILES.

 

JENNIFER: It's not the auto club.

JACK: Oh it's not? Well no wonder I'm getting lousy service. Here let me.... let me....

JENNIFER: No, no, no Jack. I don't think so. And you know what, I don't think your car's broken down either.

JACK: Actually it is broken down. And now I'm stuck here because you won't let me make a call.

JENNIFER: Well do you think maybe you want to stay here tonight?

JACK: Do I want.... do I want to stay here tonight? No.... I mean.... well you know.... you know what I mean. It's.... well I would but of course not, not like that.

JENNIFER: And how about like this?

JACK: Oh.

 

SHE TAKES HIS HAND.

 

JACK: Wait a minute.

JENNIFER: Just sit down Jack.

 

SHE PUSHES HIM BACK ONTO THE SOFA.

 

JACK: I'm just trying to....

 

HE FLOPS IN THE CORNER AND LOOKS STIFF.

 

JENNIFER: Relax.

JACK: I am relaxed.

 

SHE PICKS UP HIS ARM AND PUTS IT AROUND HER AND SNUGGLES INTO HIS SHOULDER.

JACK: Ah.... you wouldn't happen to have.... any popcorn, would you?

 

SHE LOOKS UP AT HIM AND GRINS.
