[Air date early June 1991]

SCENE ONE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE SHENANIGAN'S, STANDING BY THE BAR. MARCHANDAND THEY SET UP A DISCUSSION THERE THAT HE CAN OVERHEAR. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE AT THE BAR WHEN THE MARCHAND, LAWRENCE'S LAWYER, WALKS IN AND SITS DOWN. THEY SIT DOWN AT THE NEXT TABLE. JACK SITS JENNIFER DOWN. SHE IS GOING TO SIT IN ONE SEAT BUT HE HE SITS HER IN ANOTHER.

JACK: No sit here, sit here. Good girl. (Patting Jennifer).

SHE GIVES HIM A LOOK. JACK SITS DOWN. JACK AND JENNIFER ARE TALKING JUST AS KAYLA AND SHANE ARRIVE. THEY PASS BY JACK AND JENNIFER.; JACK TUGS AT HIS NOSE, AS IF TO GIVE THEM A SIGNAL. KAYLA AND SHANE SIT DOWN, AT A TABLE AT THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF MARCHAND. SHANE WANTS TO ORDER FOOD, KAYLA CANNOT SEE HOW HE CAN EAT AT A TIME LIKE THIS. HE TELLS HER HE IS HUNGRY. KAYLA KEEPS LOOKING OVER TOWARDS JACK AND JENNIFER. AS IF ON CUE, JACK WALKS PAST THEM TOWARDS THE BAR. SHANE FOLLOWS.

SHANE: Jack?

JACK: Oh yes.

SHANE: Listen why don't I buy a round for you and Jennifer?

JACK: Oh well if you're buying I'd certainly love a big tall....

JACK IS DISTRACTED BY A MAN.

JACK (CONT.) ....drink of water.

THE MAN WALKS UP TO MARCHAND; BOTH JACK AND SHANE ARE CURIOUS AS TO WHAT IS GOING ON. THE MAN TELLS MARCHAND THAT LAWRENCE IS NOT ABLE TO MAKE THEIR MEETING. MARCHAND GIVES THE MAN SOME PAPERS FOR LAWRENCE TO READ. JACK AND SHANE MAKE A POINT OF LISTENING IN AND TRYING TO SEE WHAT THE PAPERS ARE.

MEANWHILE KAYLA GETS UP AND GOES OVER TO TALK TO JENNIFER. IT ISOBVIOUSLY STAGED AND THEY SPEAK VERY LOUDLY.

KAYLA: Jennifer.

JENNIFER: Hi Kayla.

KAYLA: How are you doing?

JENNIFER: Good, I'm alright.

KAYLA: Well I know it must be hard for you with trail and everything. I just wanted to say that if I could do anything for at all....

JENNIFER: Well actually there is one thing you can do. You can get Kimberly to stop sticking up for Lawrence.

THE LAWYER OVERHEARS THAT BIT AND KEEPS LISTENING.

KAYLA: I wish I could but we're not really seeing eye to eye right now.

JENNIFER: Well I don't really know what happened to Kimberly. She's not the same person she used to be.

KAYLA: Yeah I know and I wish I knew how to fix it but I don't.

JENNIFER: Well maybe you could talk to her. I mean maybe you could try. I mean it's not going to help my case if Kimberly keeps defending Lawrence.

KAYLA: Well I could talk to her but it's not going to make a difference. She won't listen.

JENNIFER: It's important. It's the only chance that I have Kayla.

KAYLA: Even if I did it I don't think it would work.

JENNIFER: Well what's going on? Are you saying that maybe Kimberly has feelings for Lawrence?

KAYLA: I don't know. I'm just saying that I think you're asking too much. I'd like to help you but really can't. I'm sorry.

KAYLA APPEARS TO GET VERY UPSET. SHANE AND JACK COME OVER TO CALM THINGS DOWN. THE LAWYER HAS OBSERVED IT ALL. KAYLA WALKS BACK AND SITS WITH SHANE AND ONCE AGAIN SAYS HOW MAD SHE IS WITH LAWRENCE.

SCENE TWO: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE BACK AT THE LOFT.

JENNIFER: Well Kayla was definitely upset at Kimberly.

JACK: Well she had good reason to be too. I mean she's got a loved one living under the same roof as Lawrence and she.... oh I'm sorry, we weren't going to bring up his name today.

JENNIFER: No, it's okay. You don't have to pretend not to talk about it. I mean the trial's in a week. I think that's what's on everybody's mind right now Jack.

JACK: Oh I'll play that alone soon.

JENNIFER TAKES THE LETTER OUT AND LOOKS AT IT.

JENNIFER: I don't know, there is something about it. You know it just makes me wonder sometimes just what makes Lawrence the way is.

JACK: You know what makes the Lawrence the way he is. It's right in this letter. You don't have to think about.

JENNIFER: I know but it just bothers me. Maybe we shouldn't use this letter. Maybe we shouldn't keep it a secret.

JACK: Look we've kept it quiet this long alright. One more week to the trial and we should just stick with it.

JENNIFER: Alright. I just want to get through it.

JACK: And I think you will if you just stick to the plan.

JENNIFER: Okay.

THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR.

JENNIFER: Ah, I'll get it.

JACK: Yeah you get that and I'll just take care of this.

JACK QUICKLY TRIES TO PUT THE LETTER AWAY BUT CANNOT DO IT BEFORE KIMBERLY COMES IN. IT ISSTILL ON THE DESK.

JENNIFER: Kimberly come in.

KIMBERLY: Hi Jen, thanks. Hi Jack.

JACK: Hi.

KIMBERLY: I want to talk to you guys about the trial.

JACK: As long as you don't want to start sticking up for Lawrence again. I don't think either of us could listen to anymore of that.

KIMBERLY: No I just want acknowledge that we all want what's right and we all want to serve justice, am I right?

JENNIFER: Yes, of course.

JACK: Of course, yes, sure.

KIMBERLY: So why are you guys hiding evidence? You know what I mean. Lawrence told me you have his letter.

JACK AND JENNIFER EXCHANGE A QUICK GLANCE.

JACK: Ah.... a letter. I don't know what letter you are talking about.

KIMBERLY: You know the letter you have of Lawrence's that probably contains pertinent information to the trial and if you don't hand it over it means you are illegally withholding evidence and I know you don't that. So what I'm suggesting is that you just give me the letter or better yet give it to Lawrence because I know you don't want Roman to have to come in here and search the place.

JENNIFER: Well I mean why would you do that Kimberly?

KIMBERLY: Well I don't want to. I want what's fair and I just don't think it's fair that you're withholding valuable information that's Lawrence's.

JACK: I'm sorry. I don't understand any of this. Why are talking about being fair with Lawrence?

KIMBERLY: Not with Lawrence. Just fairness itself. Gathering all the evidence and all the facts and then drawing a conclusion.

JACK: Well I thought we all came to the same conclusion that, um, winning is all that matters. I mean those are Lawrence's words actually.

KIMBERLY: No come on Jack. Two wrongs don't make a right. I know you don't believe in that. Jen if you do have a case against Lawrence, this letter can't hurt you. It can't. Give me the letter, please Jennifer.

JACK: Kimberly, Lawrence really is getting to you isn't he?

KIMBERLY: If you both hold back evidence it can't possibly help your case.

JACK: How do you know? I mean do you know what's in this supposed letter?

KIMBERLY: No, no, but if you're right and if Lawrence is wrong, I mean what possible damage can that letter do to you?

JENNIFER: I don't understand what's going on here. I thought that we were supposed to be working together.

JACK: Yeah!

JENNIFER: And now it seems like you're out to get us Kimberly.

KIMBERLY: No, no, I'm not out to get anybody. I want what's right. I really do.

JACK: Well....

LILA COMES DOWNSTAIRS AND THEY DO NOT WANT KIMBERLY TO KNOW WHO SHE IS.

JACK: .... ah Lila! I mean ah.... ah....

KIMBERLY: Oh I didn't know you had company.

LILA: Oh I....

JENNIFER: Oh it's okay. It's alright. This is our friend.

JACK: Friend, yeah. Lydia from.... Las Vegas.

JENNIFER: Yes.

JACK: Boy her arms are tired because she just flew in. She's got some major jet lag.

JENNIFER: That's right.

KIMBERLY: Jack didn't just say Lila? Didn't somebody say Lila?

JACK: No you must be hearing things. Her name is Lydia. Isn't that right, Miss Horton?

JENNIFER: Yes, her name is Lydia.

JACK: Lydia. And she's so tired. Listen you don't look good at all. You need to get some....

JENNIFER: We going to put her back to bed.

JACK: .... Lydia this way, right, right?

JENNIFER: Excuse us for a minute.

KIMBERLY: It's nice to meet you Lydia.

JACK: Listen I want you to upstairs and stay up there and just get some good shut eye, alright. Just get some shut eye because you look terrible. And we want you looking good. This town is very superficial and we want you to look good at anytime. So you understand.... go upstairs and.... um....

WHILE THEY ARE SENDING LILA AWAY, KIMBERLY FINDS THE LETTER ON THE DESK AND PUTS IT IN HER BAG.

SCENE THREE: JACK AND JENNIFER COME BACK.

JENNIFER: She's going to get some rest.

JACK: .... ah she's quite a girl that Lydia. She's, actually she's kind of a lounge lizard, night club singer. And you should hear her do "Feelings" especially and she's very good at poker too. I mean.... she....

KIMBERLY: Jack?

JACK: Yeah?

KIMBERLY: Jack that's an interesting story. I'd love to hear it sometime but I've got to go.

JENNIFER: Oh so then we don't have anything to discuss then?

KIMBERLY: No, no. You're obviously not going to give me the letter. I wish we could have worked things out.

JACK: There's nothing to give you when we don't have a letter to give.

KIMBERLY: Yeah.

JENNIFER: Bye Kimberly.

KIMBERLY: Bye Jennifer.

JACK: Sometime we'll get together with Lydia and you know....

KIMBERLY: Sounds great.

JACK: .... play a little poker and something.

KIMBERLY: Goodnight.

AFTER SHE HAS GONE JENNIFER ASKS JACK WHAT THIS "LYDIA" BUSINESS WAS ABOUT.

JENNIFER: What is all this business about Lila, Lydia and all that?

JACK: Listen you cannot blame me for that. I mean obviously Kimberly is walking a very fine line with this thing. She.... why else would she be asking for that letter?

JENNIFER: Yeah I know.

JACK: That proves it. That's why we have to make sure she doesn't know anything about Lila.

JENNIFER: I know. I know. But what if she tells Roman? Then what are we going to do?

JACK: Well I think we're just going to have to hide the letter again and make sure no one can find it, alright.

JACK GOES OVER THE BOX WHERE THE LETTER IS KEPT ON THE DESK.

JACK: I mean we've been to too much trouble and we looked too long for that letter. We can't let somebody el....

HE STOPS TALKING BECAUSE HE CANNOT SEE THE LETTER.

JENNIFER: What? What's wrong?

JACK: We.... ah.... nothing. I....

JENNIFER: What do you mean nothing?

JACK: .... I put it somewhere else I guess. I thought it was in....

JENNIFER: It's probably right here.

THEY RUMMAGE THROUGH ALL THE PAPERS ON THE DESK.

JACK: Ah.... it's.... no it was....

JENNIFER: Jack don't tell me. Where is the letter?

JACK: Ah...I'm not telling you anything. It's ah.... the letter is, ah.... the letter's gone!

JENNIFER: Jack it can't be gone. You've probably misplaced it, that's all. You probably just forgot where you put it.

JACK: Yes well I was kind of hoping the same thing for a moment but unfortunately that is not the case.

JENNIFER: You think Kimberly took it, don't you?

JACK: I say that's a safe bet.

JENNIFER: But why would she do that? I mean she has no reason to take that letter.

JACK: Let's.... let's just examine the facts for a moment, shall we. First the letter was here, then Kimberly was here. Now Kimberly is gone and so is the letter. Stop me when you see a correlation developing.

JENNIFER: Jack that letter has got to be here somewhere. I know it's here and I'm not going to stop looking for it until I find it.

JENNIFER SEARCHES THROUGH EVERYTHING SHE CAN FIND.

JACK: I think it's time we gave it up and admit the obvious. (Beat) The reason we can't find the letter in question is because Kimberly did indeed take it.

JENNIFER: No Jack, it can't be. She.... I mean why would she? Why would she take that letter and steal for Lawrence?

JACK: There's only one way to find out, isn't there?

JENNIFER: What are you talking about, where are we going Jack?

JACK: This way. We're going to have a little visit with Miss Kimberly.

THEY BOTH LEAVE THE LOFT TO SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING.

SCENE FOUR: KIMBERLY GOES BACK TO LAWRENCE WITH THE LETTER. IT IS HER WAY TO PROVE TO HIM THAT SHE IS ON HIS SIDE.

SCENE FIVE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARRIVE AT LAWRENCE'S HOUSE WHERE KIMBERLY ANSWERS THE DOOR.

KIMBERLY: Jennifer and Jack.

JENNIFER: We need to talk to you for a minute.

KIMBERLY: Well you guys it's not.... it's not a good time.

JACK: You're telling us. It seems Kimberly by some strange quirk of fate that a certain letter belonging to Miss Horton has suddenly turned up missing.

KIMBERLY: Is that the letter that we were talking about earlier. The one that as I recall you denied having.

JACK: Yes, yes. Well I think it's about time that we dropped our pretenses about that.... all of us.

JENNIFER: Kimberly, Jack had this idea that maybe you took the letter and I said he was crazy because you would never do something like that. Now I'm right, aren't I?

KIMBERLY: You're wrong Jennifer. I did take the letter.

JACK: What did I tell you?

JENNIFER: Kimberly I can't believe this. What were you thinking. You know how much that letter means to us.

KIMBERLY: Means to you? Do you know how much it means to Lawrence? How could you possibly keep that from him? He's a human being. He has a right to know his past.

JENNIFER: As far as I'm concerned he forfeited his human rights the night that he stopped behaving like one.

LAWRENCE ENTERS.

JENNIFER: The night that you raped me!

LAWRENCE: I have had enough of you and your holier-than-thou attitude Jennifer. Up till now you and your boyfriend have been passing yourselves off as blameless. Well not anymore. Not anymore. You know you kept information from me. You kept that letter. Information that would have helped me change my life around and I take that very personally. Now get out of here, both of you. Get out! Before I....

JENNIFER: Before what, before you call the police! Are you kidding me? Do you really think that that letter is going to get you off the hook?

LAWRENCE: Well if it was that innocuous why were you so intent on keeping it from me?

JENNIFER: What is wrong, what is happening?

KIMBERLY: He has a point Jennifer. He has a point. If you didn't think it could exonerate him, why did you keep it from him? I think it's terrible what you people have done.

JENNIFER: What is happening to you? You used to be this rational honest person. Somebody worthy of respect and now here you are standing up for someone like him? (Beat) You're not the same person that you used to be Kimberly.

JENNIFER OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS OUT.

JACK: Good day!

JACK FOLLOWS HER.

SCENE SIX: THEY GO OVER TO SEE SHANE. THEY JUST WALK INTO HIS LIVING ROOM.

SHANE: What the hell....

JENNIFER: We're sorry to burst in like this.

SHANE: Well so you should be sorry coming here like this. You could have blown our entire cover. Especially given the tough time we've had hiding the fact we've been working together.

JACK: Yeah, we know that's very important but this is.... well this is kind of an emergency.

SHANE: An emergency. Why, what is it?

JENNIFER: It's Kimberly. We think that she's done something that could ruin everything for us.

SHANE: Oh wonderful, wonderful. Tell me, what's she done this time?

JENNIFER: It involves a letter that Jack and I had. A letter that we didn't tell you about.

SHANE: You two been keeping secrets? I don't believe this, with everything that's at stake. Alright I think you two should tell me what the hell this is all about and let's just hope that it's not too late to undo some of the damage you might have done.

THEY RELATE THE WHOLE TALE TO HIM.

SCENE SEVEN: THEY HAVE JUST FINISHED TELLING SHANE WHAT HAPPEND.

SHANE: What was she thinking of, how could she do this?

JENNIFER: Well is there anything we can do Shane? There must be.

SHANE: No, you two have done quite enough. Thank you very much. You just leave Kimberly to me. You just worry about keeping yourselves out of trouble.

JENNIFER: Alright, well come on Jack.

JACK: Yes, well....

JENNIFER: We'll talk to you soon.

SHANE: You can count on it.

SCENE EIGHT: AT THE LOFT AND JACK TAKES JENNIFER UP TO THE ROOF. HE COVERS HER EYES WITH HIS HAND.

JACK: Okay.

JENNIFER: Jack.

JACK: Watch your step.

JENNIFER: What are you doing?

JACK: I'm not quite sure actually. It's something that came up rather suddenly. Just take a right. No take a left. There you go. Now this is a kind of half baked surprise if you will. Kind of in the moment. I know you're in need of one. Ah, as it turns out a couple of ah.... a couple of out of town guests apparently popped in and wanted to pay you a visit. Ah....

JENNIFER: I wasn't expecting any guests Jack.

JACK: I know.

JENNIFER: Who are they?

JACK: They are.... well as I said, they're from out of town and they.... ah.... well I guess a good hint would be to tell you that they are not the most brilliant conversationalists but they.... ah.... they're fairly good listeners and I think you could probably use that right now.

JENNIFER: Come on Jack, I really.... I....

JACK: You haven't guessed it right?

JENNIFER: No.

JACK: Well I guess the best thing to do would be to let you see for your own eyes because I kind of can't believe it myself. Here you go.

HE TAKES HIS HAND AWAY AND THERE ON THE ROOF ARE TWO SNOW PEOPLE JUST LIKE JACK MADE HER IN THE WOODS. THEY ARE SITTING AT A TABLE SET FOR FOUR PEOPLE.

JENNIFER: I can't believe this Jack. It's Herman and Hermione. I can't believe you brought them here.

JACK: Yes. In the flesh or actually in the Styrofoam if you will.

oldEp293A

JENNIFER: Mopheads. Obviously they're not real. I mean it's too warm out.

JACK: Well, I think they're a little bit more prepared for the climate. Well don't be rude, please, have a seat.

JENNIFER: Okay.

JENNIFER SITS DOWN AND JACK SITS NEXT TO HER OPPOSITE THE SNOW PEOPLE.

oldEp293B

JACK: I set it up girl girl and.... boy, thing and boy. It's better for the conversation, I guess. Ah, yes.... well ah, I'm hoping that the two ladies over here will be pleased. What do you think?

JENNIFER: I think we're going to have a really wonderful time.
oldEp293C

JACK: Why?

JENNIFER: I don't think we've ever been in better company.

JACK: Um, that's saying a lot isn't it? If you'll excuse me, it only gets better. Get ready for the piece a la resistance.

JENNIFER: Oh, oh, am I ready for this?

JACK: Yes. And you know the best part, it's just us. We're the only ones. Listen, just the four of us.

JACK WALKS OVER AND PRESSES THE START BUTTON ON A SNOW MAKING MACHINE. IT SHOOTS A SPRAY OF SNOW OVER THE ROOF.

JENNIFER: Jack!

JACK: Yes!.... Yes, yes, yes.

SCENE NINE: THEY BOTH START TO LAUGH. THEY ARE SITTING AT THE TABLE ABOUT TO MAKE A TOAST WHEN SHANE WALKS UP TO THE ROOF.

SHANE: JACK, JENNIFER!

JACK: Ah.... oh, let me get that.

SHANE LOOKS AMAZED AT THE SNOW MACHINE AND JACK AND JENNIFER WEIRD DINNER COMPANIONS.

JACK: Oh, oh, oh.

JENNIFER: Jack.

SHANE: I'm sorry to interrupt. I knocked downstairs but I just assumed when there was no answer that you were.... I don't know why I just assumed.... what is going on here?

JACK: Well....

JENNIFER: It's a long story Shane.

JACK: Please.

SHANE: I'm sure it is but I just came from Kimberly and she's not going to budge. It seems that I can't control her anymore.

JACK: Well where does that leave us?

SHANE: Well it leaves us with our original agenda as planned. We just have to hope that Kimberly doesn't ruin our chances of getting Lawrence Alamain.

THEY ALL LOOK VERY WORRIED.
