[Air date early September 1991]

SCENE ONE: IT IS THE NEXT DAY AND HAWK IS TRYING TO READ JENNIFER'S DIARY. HE IS SEARCHING IN THE DESK DRAWER WHEN HE HEARS A KEY TURN IN THE LOCK. HE QUICKLY MOVES AWAY AS JENNIFER ENTERS.

JENNIFER: Oh, hi Hawk.

HAWK: Oh, afternoon.

JENNIFER: Where's your nurse? Why isn't she helping you?

HAWK: Oh well, she never did show up this morning. I'm just trying to just keep walking around here, just keep things loose. There's really no substitute for actual therapy.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute, you're scheduled for a back massage today, weren't you?

HAWK: Yeah, first thing this morning. And it just seems to be getting worse and worse. AAAARGH!

HE PRETENDS TO BE IN PAIN AND GRABS HOLD OF JENNIFER.

JENNIFER: I don't believe this. Hawk!

HAWK: I'm sorry Jennifer.

JENNIFER: Are you okay?

HAWK: Boy I am sorry. It's amazing the difference that therapy makes every single day. You miss one time, it's just. Ooooh.

JENNIFER: Look I'm not a professional or anything but I could try to give you a massage. I mean if you don't mind I think I've pretty good hands. I could give it a shot.

HAWK: Yeah, I'm sure you do.

JENNIFER: Alright, so let's try it. I mean it could end up helping.

HAWK: Well alright, I mean I'm willing if you are. I mean anything if it's going to relieve this pain. I mean it's just absolutely just killing me.

JENNIFER: Okay, sit down.

HAWK: Thanks.

JENNIFER: Sit down right here and I'm going to find out what happened to this nurse.

HAWK: Okay.

JENNIFER: Let's just take your robe off here, alright. And we'll just do it without your shirt on. And I will call this nurse and find out where she is.

HAWK: Okay, thank you Jennifer.

JENNIFER: You're welcome.

SCENE TWO: BACK AT THE HOTEL, HOWARD AND CHAUNCEY HAVE HAD A MEETING. HOWARD IS WORRIED THAT HAWK IS GETTING TOO FOND OF JENNIFER AND THAT IT WILL MESS UP THEIR BIG PLAN.

SCENE THREE: BACK AT THE PENTHOUSE, JENNIFER BEGINS TO GIVE HAWK A BACK MASSAGE. HE IS LYING ON THE MASSAGE TABLE AND SHE IS RUNNING HER FINGERS OVER HIS SHOULDERS AND DOWN HIS SPINE.

JENNIFER: Alright, how's that? Am I getting deep enough?

HAWK: Actually you could go a little bit deeper Jennifer and I'll just let you know if that pressure gets too much for me to bear.

JENNIFER: Alright, alright let's see. There, is that okay?

HAWK: Oh yeah, Jennifer, you're just moving my circulation along just fine.

JENNIFER: Alright, how about the pain?

HAWK: You just keep right on doing what you're doing and I'm going to live.

JENNIFER: Alright.

AT THAT MOMENT, JACK WALKS IN THE DOOR.

JACK: Maybe, maybe not!

JENNIFER: Hi Jack.

JACK: What the hell's going on here?

JENNIFER: I'm trying to help Hawk with his therapy.

HAWK: Yeah, she's doing a good job too.

JENNIFER: He was supposed to have a back massage today.

JACK: I know that but what about your highly trained well proportioned nurse that I hired for you?

JENNIFER: She never came. I came home, Hawk was by himself and in incredible pain so I had to fill in.

JACK: You can't fill in. You're not.... you're not qualified.

HAWK: I thought she was doing just fine.

JACK: Well.... well there's no way that she can do that though. I mean there's a chance that she might misconnect the X-bone where it connects to the Y-Bone. Come on, come on, we have to go. We have an appointment, don't you remember?

JENNIFER: We don't have an appointment Jack.

JACK: Yes we do. You'll remember it as soon as we get there. It's very important.

JENNIFER: Hawk....

JACK: Howie have a good time. Take care of yourself.

JACK DRAGS JENNIFER OUT THE DOOR LEAVING HAWK STILL ON THE MASSAGE TABLE. HAWK SMILES WHEN THEY LEAVE. HE IS SUCCEEDING IN GETTING JENNIFER TO FALL FOR HIS TRICKS AND ALSO IN CREATING TROUBLE BETWEEN JACK AND JENNIFER.

HAWK: Hurry home Jennifer.

SCENE FOUR: WHEN THEY ARE GONE HE GOES INTO THEIR BEDROOM AND FINDS HER DIARY. HE OPENS THE LOCK WITH A PAPER CLIP AND BEGINS TO READ HER SECRET FEELINGS.

"For a man who has a way with words, Jack has so few when it comes to expressing how he feels. Sometimes I wish he would just blurt it all out but I'm becoming pretty good at interpreting. No matter what he says or how he says it, I know he loves me and I love him too."

HE TURNS OVER A FEW PAGES.

"Now that Hawk is living with us, it's hard to be alone with Jack at all. And lately when we manage to accomplish that, Jack's mind is on other things. He's been so jealous and paranoid and it takes him so to trust anybody, if he ever does. Not that I trust Hawk yet either. But we'll see. It's still early."

HAWK IS VERY HAPPY TO HAVE THIS INFORMATION.

SCENE FIVE: MEANWHILE JACK TAKES JENNIFER TO WINGS.

JENNIFER: Wings? This was our appointment, coming to Wings?

JACK: Do you or do you not believe that Wings is your favorite restaurant?

JENNIFER: Well yes but....

JACK: Case closed. Oh captain, my captain.

JACK CALLS DAVE OVER.

DAVE: Yes someone will be right with you.

JENNIFER: I just don't understand why we rush out that way, Jack.

JACK: Look hunger is a harsh mistress, alright. Enough said.

JENNIFER: Alright, Jack.

AS THEY TURN BACK, THE NEW ASSISTANT MANAGER AT WINGS, CONNOR, WALKS UP. HE'S WORKING WITH JULIE AND HE'S VERY HANDSOME AND CHARMING.

CONNOR: Jennifer Horton! Wow, I watch your newscast everyday. It's very nice to meet you.

JENNIFER: Oh well thank you, thank you very much.

THE GUY KISSES JENNIFER'S HAND.

JACK: Enough slobbering, alright.

JENNIFER: Jack.
oldEp334
JACK: What are you trying to prove anyway?

CONNOR: Prove? Nothing. I didn't mean to offend you.

JACK: Oh, oh I see, I see. Well let me tell you something. Playing (An allusion to Gomez Addams, from The Addams Family) Gomez with my wife's arm is one good way to do it. I tell you something, she is not easy and neither am I, so thank you very much.

JULIE: Excuse me, is there a problem?

JACK: Yes, this maniac is....

JULIE: Oh Jack, Jack, it's you. I.... answered my own question.

JACK: I was just going to say that this maniac is assaulting my wife.

JULIE: By maniac, are you referring to Connor, the new manager I hired this afternoon?

JACK: Manager?

JULIE: There's an echo in here Connor.

JENNIFER: Say goodnight Jack.

JACK: Well perhaps someone could show us to a table that I could.... crawl under.

JULIE: Only if you promise to stay there through the appetizer. Come this way.

CONNOR: Nice to have met you Miss Horton.

JENNIFER: It was very nice to meet you too, Connor.

JACK: Yes, thank you.

JULIE: Considering the mood you two seem to be in, how about this table. It's at a distance from everything else.

JACK: Yes, it's perfect. Just bring us some champagne and some oysters and we'll see about dessert.

JACK TAKES HIS SEAT WHILE JENNIFER HAS QUICK WORD WITH JULIE.

JENNIFER: Your new manager is very cute.

JULIE: Cute? Did you say cute?

JENNIFER: Yeah, don't you think so?

JULIE: Well of course I think but cute is not the first four letter word I would have picked to describe him.

JENNIFER: Oh, alright.

JULIE: Well I hope the two of you just have a ball.

JENNIFER: Thanks Julie.

JULIE LEAVES THEM ALONE AT THE TABLE.

JACK: I heard what you said.

JENNIFER: This is very nice.

JACK: Huh, uh, huh, uh. I said I was hearing what you said. I mean you whisper like a teamster, you know that.

JACK IS QUITE UPSET WITH ALL THIS ATTENTION SHE IS GETTING FROM OTHER MEN.
oldEp334B
JENNIFER: Jack, he's cute. You have to admit that.

JACK: How do you know what cute is?

JENNIFER: I married you, didn't I?

JACK GLANCES UP AT HER.

JACK: Yeah, you know, Howie's cute.

JENNIFER: That's it, that's it. That's the whole reason we're here, isn't it? You are impossible Jack. The only man in this world that I love is you. Okay, why can't you be happy? No one can take that away from us.

JACK: Yes they can. I'm sorry that I have to be the one to tell you this but happiness can be taken away from you. It can happen just like that. It could be gone.
oldEp334C
JACK LOOKS ACROSS AND SEES CONNOR STARING AT JENNIFER.

JENNIFER: Jack look at me. What do you mean happiness can be taken away? Are you talking about our happiness?

JACK: Just forget it.

JENNIFER: No, I don't want to forget it. I want to take care of this and straighten it out.

JACK: It's too late, isn't it.

JENNIFER: No, please.

JACK: It's too late. I mean you were right, it was him. It's him alright. You were right all along.

JENNIFER: Him?

JACK: Hawk. (Beat) Howie. I mean I tried to not let him get to me but it does and so does he and that's the way I feel.

JENNIFER: Jack he is not going to be living with us forever.

JACK: It already feels like forever. I don't trust him. He's a sneak. I know what sneaky is. I mean that's one category I'm qualified to judge.

JENNIFER IS BEGINNING TO SEE HOW UPSET JACK REALLY IS.

JACK: I'm sorry, that's the just the way that I feel, alright. You asked....

JENNIFER: Alright, I understand.

JACK: You want to know how I feel? Okay. (Beat) It just took a long time for us.... (Jack corrects himself) for me to allow us.... to be us. And to even feel comfortable being alone with you. Now with.... now with Howie wandering.... I mean he's round that apartment all day and all night....
oldEp334D

HE TAKES HER HAND.

JACK: I tell you something. I just want it to be the way it was before we became a recovery ward. (Beat) I'm sorry, I'm just sure it must be ridiculous.

HE IS EMBARRASSED ABOUT SHOWING HOW DEEP HIS FEELINGS ARE.

JENNIFER: No, you're not being ridiculous. You're being you. That's how you feel.

JACK: Even if what I'm feeling is ridiculous?

JENNIFER: Look Jack, if Hawk living at our penthouse bothers you that much, we are going to have to work even harder to get him well and get him out of there as soon as possible, alright. But whatever we're going to do it together, right. Do you hear me, we're going to do it together.

SHE TAKES HIS HAND IN HERS AND STROKES IT. HE PUTS HIS HAND ON TOP OF HERS AND THEY CLING TO EACH OTHER. THEY LOOK IN EACH OTHER'S EYES AND DESPITE HER ASSURANCES, JACK KNOWS THAT THINGS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN.

SCENE SIX: BACK AT THE PENTHOUSE, CHAUNCEY HAS DROPPED BY. HE TELLS HAWK THAT GINGER IS LEAVING TO FIND HER FATHER AND HAWK WANTS CHAUNCEY TO GO WITH HER.

SCENE SEVEN: LATER JACK AND JENNIFER RETURN AND HAWK IS SITTING ON THE SOFA. JENNIFERIS IN A VERY GOOD MOOD.

JENNIFER: Oh, hey Hawk.

HAWK: Hey folks.

JENNIFER: You still up.

HAWK: Had a nice evening I hope.

JENNIFER: Yeah.

JACK: Yeah, it was none of your business but.... yeah.

JENNIFER: We had a.... we had a very wonderful dinner, just the two of us.

HAWK: Well it sounds cozy.

JACK: And private. At least it was, past tense.

JENNIFER: So how have you been doing?

HAWK: Well, I'm sittin' up.

JACK: What a talent!

HAWK: But you know those fingers of yours did my back a world of good.

JACK SIGHS AND TURNS AWAY BUT JENNIFER HOLDS ONTO HIM.

JENNIFER: Well good. I'm just glad that it didn't do any damage that's all.

JACK: Look I hate to break up this cozy little tt-á-tt but ah.... is that my financial section?

HAWK: Well Jack it just so happens it is and it's opened right up here to the stock market. I figured you'd want to look at it there to check up on that little purchase you made. Oh by the way it's gone down again.

JACK: You don't have to tell me, alright.

HAWK: Yeah, that one I was telling you about is doing just great. You know it's up 6 3/4% from yesterday alone.

JENNIFER: Really? What stock is this?

HAWK: You know you guys can still get in on the ground floor there. The money's guaranteed.

JACK: There is nothing guaranteed in this world especially when it comes to stocks.

JENNIFER: Yes but Hawk just said there was a good....

JACK: Listen, Harper Deveraux may not have been Grandpa Walton. But he was one thing and that was a good investor and he taught me all about it. He didn't do too bad for himself either.... at least financially.

JACK STARTS TO WALK AWAY.

JENNIFER: Well where are you going?

JACK: I am going to look over my losses in peace, if that's alright. And also to get away from anymore business tips from Quickdraw McGraw.

JACK WALKS INTO THE BEDROOM.

SCENE EIGHT: JACK HAS GONE TO BED, JENNIFER HAS REMAINED IN THE LIVINGROOM, AND IS SITTING ON THE SOFA NEXT TO HAWK. SHE CONTINUES TO FALL FOR HIS PHONY LINES, AND STILL CANNOT SEE THAT HE IS MANIPULATING HER, AND PURPOSEFULLY CAUSING A PROBLEMS FOR HER AND JACK.

JENNIFER: Sorry.

HAWK: Yeah. Hey why don't you come over here and sit down next to me?

JENNIFER: Thank you.

HAWK: These days are so long.

JENNIFER: I bet they are for you, huh.

HAWK: So where did you all go for dinner tonight?

JENNIFER: Oh there's a restaurant called Wings. Have you been there yet?

HAWK: Well just to the bar.

JENNIFER: Oh.

HAWK: You know it is so heartwarming.

JENNIFER: What's that?

HAWK: Well you two just going out and having candlelight and doing what you can to keep your romance alive, fresh you know, and you know, really not taking it for granted. Not that you would take it for granted being newlyweds and all. But you know, it can just.... it can slip away so fast when you're not paying attention. And there are other circumstances too, I'm sure.

JENNIFER: What do you mean by circumstances?

HAWK: Well like me for instance. I mean you're much too kind to say it but I'm pretty sure I'm quite a strain on you and Jack.

JENNIFER: You know to tell you the truth Hawk, Jack has been having a....

THE PHONE RINGS.

HAWK: Well I guess I'm going to have to wait to hear that truth.

JENNIFER: Yes. Just one moment, okay.

HAWK: Okay.

JENNIFER PICKS UP THE PHONE AND IT IS DESIRÉE. SHE TELLS JENNIFER THAT SHE KNEW IT WAS HER BEFORE SHE ANSWERED. JENNIFER FALLS FOR ALL DESIRÉE'S LINES WHEN SHE SAYS THAT SHE NEEDS ANOTHER READING. SHE TELLS JENNIFER THAT SHE IS ON HER WAY TO SALEM, WHEN IN FACT SHE IS REALLY ALREADY THERE. JENNIFER TRIES TO TELL DESIRÉE THAT IT IS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO COME BECAUSE OF JACK BUT DESIRÉE PRETENDS THE LINE IS TOO BAD TO HEAR AND HANGS UP.

JENNIFER: Oh no, oh Jack.

HAWK: Some problems?

JENNIFER: No but there will be when I tell him. That was the psychic that we met on our honeymoon and she's in the area and she wants to see us.

HAWK: Hmmm, that is strange isn't it?

JENNIFER: Look I don't want you to take this the wrong way alright, but if we have another guest in our house, Jack's going to go out of his mind. I just hope she heard me.

HAWK: So do you plan on telling Jack?

JENNIFER: Well I'm going to start anyway. Let's just keep our fingers crossed and pray that she doesn't come here.

HAWK: Yeah.

JENNIFER GOES TO THE BEDROOM AND LEAVES HAWK ALONE.

HAWK: Yeah let's all pray.

SCENE NINE: A BIT LATER JENNIFER COMES BACK OUT AND HAWK IS STILL UP.

JENNIFER: Hawk?

HAWK: You still up?

ENNIFER: Yeah I thought you might want the rest of your paper back.

HAWK: Oh actually I'm doing just fine with what I've got.

JENNIFER: Yeah well Jack and I are going to be turning in so if there's anything else you need.

HAWK: I couldn't be more content, given the givens here. I want to thank you for worrying about me.

JENNIFER: Well you're welcome. I mean I just wish I knew what happened to that nurse.

HAWK: You mean why she didn't show up this morning?

JENNIFER: Yeah.

HAWK: Well I have to be honest with you Jennifer. It might have been something that I said. You see I just happened to mention to her that I wasn't in the market for any kind of a casual relationship and she wasn't really too thrilled with that news.

JENNIFER: I see.

HAWK: Well I mean I didn't want to hurt her feelings or anything and it's not that I didn't think she was a really attractive girl and a super hard worker. It's just that I'm really honest and upfront with people, good or bad, and that's just the way that it is and if I wasn't I couldn't look myself in the mirror every morning. It might be a little selfish but that's just the way I am.

ONCE AGAIN JENNIFER FALLS FOR ALL HIS LINES.

JENNIFER: No actually, I really admire that Hawk.

HAWK: Do you really?

JENNIFER: Look to tell you the truth, as far as I'm concerned honesty is never a problem. I mean I wish more that people could feel like that and could be open like that.

HAWK: Yeah I know what you mean Jennifer. I do know what you mean.

HAWK HAS A SLY SMILE ON HIS FACE.

SCENE TEN: LATER THAT NIGHT, JENNIFER SPENDS SOME TIME WRITING IN HER DIARY WHILE JACK CLEANS HIS TEETH AND GETS READY FOR BED.

I felt the longer I worked the harder finding ideas for stories would get to be. But I was wrong. Tomorrow I begin doing research on the Hawkins family. I don't know what I'm looking for yet but I know I'll find something interesting to tell about them. Maybe I'll do a story on Hawk.

JACK'S GARGLING NOISES COME FROM THE BATHROOM.

I haven't said anything to Jack yet. He's been so upset and jealous about any attention I've pay to Hawk these last few days. In fact he gets upset about any attention I show anybody. So at least until I've decided what the story's about, I just think I'm better off not mentioning it. I will though soon, I guess. I mean there's no reason not to.... really.

JACK COMES INTO THE BEDROOM.

JACK: I.... I got this great idea.

JENNIFER: Huh.

JACK: From now on when I'm getting ready to go to bed, you can read me a little, you know, bedtime story from that little book of fairy tales that you're writing.

JENNIFER: No, I don't think so Jack.

JACK CLIMBS INTO BED.

JACK: Alright, whatever you wish. It was just a suggestion. I thought it would be nice way to end the day.

JENNIFER: True, true.

JENNIFER TURNS OFF THE BEDSIDE LAMP.

JENNIFER: But I have a better idea for how to end the day.

SHE CLIMBS INTO BED AND CURLS UP BEHIND HIM. HE TAKES HER HAND.
oldEp334F
JACK: Well whatever you suggest. I just want to let you know I'm here to listen if you have anything to say.

JENNIFER IS SILENT.

JACK: Jennifer?

JENNIFER: Huh?

JACK: Something on your mind?

SHE WRAPS HIS ARM AROUND HER.

JENNIFER: No. (Beat) No, not a thing. I'm not thinking about a thing.

SHE STARES INTO SPACE AND JACK KNOWS THAT SOMETHING IS GOING ON.
