SCENE ONE: JENNIFER IS BENDING OVER JACK'S BODY. THERE IS BLOOD ALL OVER JACK'S SHIRT.

 

JENNIFER: JACK? Jack, come on, say something to me. Jack, SAY SOMETHING. JACK!

HAWK: Jennifer wait a minute, wait, wait. He can't be dead. I mean I know he's hurt but....

JENNIFER: WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE CAN'T BE DEAD? HE IS DEAD AND YOU KILLED HIM. JACK.... oh Jack.

SHE RESTS HER HEAD AGAINST HIS AND HOLDS HIM.

JENNIFER: Oh Jack! I tried to stop you, I tried to warn you. Oh Jack.

HAWK: Jennifer I didn't mean to. I didn't mean to. I....

 

HE MOVES TOWARDS JACK'S BODY AND SHE SCREAMS AT HIM.

JENNIFER: YOU GET AWAY. HAWK: Now will you listen to me?

JENNIFER: YOU GET AWAY.

HAWK: It was self defense okay.

JENNIFER: WHAT DO YOU MEAN? THAT'S ALL YOU CAN THINK ABOUT NOW IS SELF DEFENSE? YOU KILLED MY HUSBAND AND I AM GOING TO MAKE YOU PAY FOR THIS.

HAWK IS REALLY SCARED BECAUSE HE CAN HEAR SIRENS.

HAWK: Wait a minute, what's going on?

JENNIFER: The police. I called them on my way over.

HAWK: NO!

HE RUNS FOR THE DOOR AND MANAGES TO GET PAST THE POLICE AND ESCAPE.

JENNIFER: DON'T LET HIM GO. HE JUST KILLED MY HUSBAND!

POLICE: FREEZE!

 

HAWK RUNS AWAY.

SCENE TWO: HAWK HAS GONE BACK TO HIS OWN ROOM; HE IS PULLING THE FRONT PANEL OFF THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT. HE REACHES IN AND PULLS OUT A PLASTIC BAG CONTAINING A LOT OF MONEY. HE STUFFS IT INTO A SMALL SUITCASE WITH A FEW OF HIS CLOTHES. HE RUNS TO THE DOOR AND OPENS IT. JENNIFER IS STANDING THERE.

 

JENNIFER: You going somewhere Hawk.

HAWK: Jennifer, ah.... look, look I know how you feel about me right now and I don't blame you for that, okay. And I can explain everything but I don't have time right now. I have to get out of here before....

SHE WALKS STRAIGHT INTO THE ROOM.

JENNIFER: Before what? Before the police come? It's alright, you have a few minutes. I told them you'd probably be down on the docks but it's only a matter of time before they come looking for you here.

HAWK IS SURPRISED AT WHAT SHE SAYS AND PUTS DOWN THE SUITCASE.

HAWK: Wait a minute, why did you do that? Why did you put them off my trail?

JENNIFER: Because you said you had an explanation, alright. I just saw my husband being carried off in a body bag and I think I have a right to know why.

HAWK: It was self defense. (Beat) Wait a minute, you knew Jack was coming looking for me with a gun.

JENNIFER: How did you know Hawk? How could you have known that if you hadn't read my diary?

HAWK: Yeah, I read your diary.

JENNIFER: Hmm, I thought we were friends. I actually thought that you cared about me Hawk.

HAWK: I did. I do care about you.

JENNIFER: Oh you DO NOT! YOU LIE TO ME, YOU SNEAK AROUND READING MY DIARY. YOU WERE USING ME.

HAWK: I was not using you! (Beat) Not after I....

JENNIFER: What? After WHAT?

HAWK: After.... after I got to know you, I wasn't using you.

JENNIFER: AFTER WHAT HAWK, WHAT?

HAWK: After I fell in love with you.

JENNIFER: What did you just say?

HAWK: I love you. And I never meant for any of this kind of think to happen. And Gramps said it was going to be so easy, just to come in here and just take the cash and run, just like all the other times. This time it was different. Jennifer you were different. It broke my own cardinal rule. I mean just never get emotionally involved. But I never knew anyone like you. You're so sweet and so pure and.... and all the time when I was around you, I never felt the way that I felt with you before. And I had to have you. And the only way that I was going to get you Jennifer, I had to get Jack out of the way. But I never wanted him dead. You gotta believe that. All I ever wanted was for you and I to be together. Just.... I wanted to see you happy. I'm really sorry. I never wanted this to happen.

JENNIFER: I think I understand.

HAWK: Oh you do. You're not going to turn me in?

JENNIFER: I don't have to.

HAWK: What do you mean?

JACK APPEARS IN THE DOORWAY, WITH BLOOD STILL ALL OVER HIS SHIRT.

JACK: She means nobody died.

HAWK IS IN SHOCK.

SCENE THREE: A VERY ALIVE JACK APPEARS AT THE DOOR OF HAWK'S APARTMENT. HAWK CANNOT BELIEVE IT.

JACK: What's the matter Howie? (Beat) You look like you've seen a ghost.

HAWK REALIZES WHAT THEY HAVE DONE.

HAWK: What the hell! Jack! You two.... you two set me up, didn't you?

JACK: How does it feel to be on the other side Howie? How does it feel?

HAWK: I don't know what you're talking about Jackie Boy.

JACK: I'm talking about a setup Howie. The same kind of setup that you staged with me and Paul Wedder. You wanted me to think that we'd killed a Federal agent right? So I'd run off on my own and not call the police. So I'd leave everything behind. My home, my newspaper, my wife. Huh?

HAWK: I can't.... I can't believe that you even pulled this off Jack.

 

JACK IS REALLY PLEASED TO GET ONE UP ON BABY HOWIE. DESIRüE WALKS IN BEHIND JACK.

 

DESIRüE: And he had a little help from a friend.

HAWK: Dessy.

JENNIFER: And my grandmother and Jack's mother too.

DESIRüE: And you said you couldn't con a con. Well that's exactly what we did.

HAWK: And you're a little con, you're a little no good LYING CHEAT, DOUBLE CROSSER.

DESIRüE: DON'T EVEN TRY IT. Don't even try it. You're in enough trouble as it is.

HAWK GOES AFTER DESIRÉE BACK JACK STEPS IN BETWEEN THEM.

JACK: NO!

HAWK: Oh yeah?

DESIRüE: Huh.

HAWK: No I'm not. I'm not in any trouble here because Jack's standing right here and I didn't kill anybody.

JACK: Wait a minute. As far as I can remember, taking five million dollars from another person is still regarded as a crime isn't it?

HAWK: Well you got no proof Jack.

JACK: I don't need proof. Jennifer's got the proof. You confessed to her.

HAWK: Yeah well then it's just her word against mine, isn't it?

JENNIFER: No, Hawk. It's your word against yours.

JENNIFER OPENS HER COAT AND SHOWS HIM THE TAPE RECORDER SHE HAS HIDDEN.

JACK: We've got it all on tape. It's look like you're going to Club Fed.

HAWK: GIVE ME THAT!

HE REACHES OUT TO JENNIFER BUT SHE THROWS IT OVER HAWK TO JACK.

JENNIFER: JACK!

JACK: JENNIFER!

JACK: JACK!

JACK CATCHES THE TAPE RECORDER AND HANDS IT TO DESIRüE. THE POLICE WALK IN RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT AND TAKE THE TAPE.

JACK: There, quick! Oh officer! (Beat) Alright, alright thank you for coming officer. It looks like the con is finally over Howie.... finally.

THE POLICE START TO HANDCUFF HAWK.

HAWK: Jennifer, you remember what I told you. If there's anything I ever did, I did it for you.

JENNIFER: NO YOU DIDN'T!

HAWK: Yes I did.

JENNIFER: NO YOU DIDN'T HAWK. You said you wanted me but you never once thought to ask if I wanted you. I love my husband. I don't want anybody else except my husband.

JACK IS RELIEVED AND HAPPY TO HEAR THAT.

JENNIFER: So everything you did, you did for yourself and now you're going to have to live with the consequences.

POLICE: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be held against you....

DESIRüE: Shall I predict your future Hawk? I'd say eight to ten.

HAWK: JUST SHUT UP!

DESIRüE: Oh daddy, you're in the slammer now so you don't frighten me or nothing.

HAWK: SHUT UP DESSY, SHUT UP!

HAWK IS TAKEN AWAY BY THE POLICE WITH DESIRüE FOLLOWING BEHIND ENJOYING THE WHOLE THING.

SCENE FOUR: BACK INSIDE, JACK AND JENNIFER ARE VERY HAPPY.

JENNIFER: We did it!

JACK: Yeah, you're right, we did it. Let's call ourselves.... what.... Redford and Newman. How about that?

JENNIFER: No, let's call ourselves Deveraux and Deveraux.

JACK: Alright.

SHE LEAPS INTO HIS ARMS.

JACK: Deveraux and Deveraux it is!

 

THEY BOTH SMILE AS THEY HOLD EACH OTHER TIGHT.

SCENE FIVE: JACK, JENNIFER, AND DESIRüE ARE AT ALICE'S RESTAURANT FOR A LITTLE CELEBRATION.

JACK: Alright ladies, I brought you here to celebrate. Order whatever you want, within reason of course and I'll cover it.

DESIRüE: You could have at least popped for Wings Jack.

JACK: I'll be popping for a lot of things when I get my five million dollars back. But in meantime I thought it was good to celebrate now. Just...I mean to see the smug look disappear from Baby Howie's face, to beat him at his own game. fake blood, fake fight, fake bullets, it was perfect. It was perfectamundo.... perfect.

JENNIFER: Well it wasn't exactly perfectamundo.

JACK: Well what do you mean?

JENNIFER TURNS TO DESIRüE.

DESIRüE: You tell him.

JENNIFER: I think you should tell him DesirØe.

JACK: Tell.... tell me what.

DESIRüE: Well it all happened so fast Jack you know. We were in the alley and Dave was working for Mrs. Horton so when he dumped the trash it created the perfect diversion for.... for me to switch the bullets in Hawk's gun to blanks. And it all happened so fast you know. I put in as many as I could but then....

JACK: Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait a minute. Are you trying tell me that there were real bullets in that gun?

DESIRüE: Only one.

JACK: Only one! Did you know about this?

JENNIFER: Jack when I found out I tried to get to you immediately. I called the police and I raced right over.

JACK: Let me get this straight. You're telling me that Baby Howie could have shot me dead.

JENNIFER: Yes.

JACK: Oh, well that's not....

JACK EYES BEGIN TO ROLL BACK IN HIS HEAD

AND HE FAINTS. JENNIFER AND DESIRüE LOOK AT EACH OTHER IN SURPRISE.

SCENE SIX: A SHORT TIME LATER, JENNIFER HAS MANAGED TO GET JACK INTO A CHAIR WHERE SHE SLAPS HIS FACE TO GET HIM TO COME TO.

JENNIFER: Look at me, wake up, Jack.

HE WAKES UP AND THE FIRST THING HE SEES IS THE BLOOD ON HIS SHIRT.

JACK: AAAARRRRGGGHHHH! I'm dying, I'm dead.

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: I'm dead. I need a drink.

JENNIFER: Jack you are not dead. Jack, you're not dead. Remember it was fake blood. Jack you are not dead. Look at me.

JACK: I'm not.... oh I'm not. Cause it would be running out of me by now. Fake blood, fake fight, fake bullets, of course. Yeah it's coming back to me now, of course it is.

JENNIFER: Yes! This whole thing with Hawk is finally Jack and he's never going to come between us again.

JACK: Wait a minute, there was one more thing I was remembering. When I was.... you were saying something.... you were saying something to Baby Howie about.... ah.... well about your husband being.... well that you loved him more than anyone.

JENNIFER: Yes and I meant every word of it.

JACK: Well I feel the same way. I mean not about the husband part but.... you know, don't you?

JENNIFER: I know. I know. And I'm never going to doubt you again Jack, never ever.

THEY MOVE CLOSER AND CLOSER UNTIL THEY ARE KISSING AND HUGGING EACH OTHER.

JENNIFER: We did it!
