Jennifer's Shower. Jennifer Has an Ultrasound,
and She and Jack See a Photo of their Baby

[Air date early October 1992]

SCENE ONE: THE NEXT DAY AND JENNIFER IS FIDDLING WITH HER CLOTHES AS JACK COMES INTO THE LIVING ROOM. JACK NOW HAS SHORT HAIR.

JACK: Question before I go. What is this compulsion of women to wear shoulder pads?

JENNIFER: Well you see they are very slimming so that when you look at me the first thing that you will look at is my shoulders. You won't.... you won't feel like the first thing you want to look at is my.... how can anybody look at your shoulders when your stomach is this humungous Jack?

JACK: I.... I don't think you need to worry about anyone looking at anything. I mean I think you should be proud to look the way you do with or without shoulder pads.

JENNIFER: I love you so much Jack. I love you so much.

SHE GIVES HIM A HUG AND THEY KISS.

JACK: You know perhaps.... perhaps I should change my plans and not go in to work today.

JENNIFER: No, no, I'm fine. I don't need you to stay here and hold my hand all day. I'll be fine.

JACK: That's true. I know you can incubate on your own and we both know I need to get to work so that I can get us a decent place to live.

JENNIFER: You know what Jack, you don't need to worry about it. I mean we have a roof over our heads for the time being. We'll be fine.

JACK: Yes, your grandparents roof and for the time being we'll deal with it. But that just reminded me. I need to go get the rest of our things out of that apartment so we can get them before they are thrown into the street.

JENNIFER: You know what, I really wish you'd let me help you.

JACK: I don't think that's a good idea.

JENNIFER: All right, why don't you just go. I'll be fine, okay. Stop worrying about me and you just go.

JACK: I'll go when you assure me that you're going to stay right here and take it easy. Now remember Isabella is going to come over. Am I correct? And help you out with your shower and....

JENNIFER: You know what Jack, I'm thinking about calling her and telling her not to.

JACK: I don't think that would be a good idea.

JENNIFER: She's very sick. I don't want to make her worse. I don't think that's a good idea.

JACK: Well then don't make it worse. I think.... I think she needs this as much or more than you do. So I will.... I do.

THE DOORBELL RINGS AND THEY GO TO ANSWER IT. IT'S ISABELLA AND THEY BOTH PAUSE BEFORE OPENING THE DOOR.

SCENE TWO: JENNIFER OPENS THE DOOR AND ISABELLA LOOKS EVEN SICKER THAN EVER.

JENNIFER: Hi.

ISABELLA: Hi you guys. Everybody ready to plan a shower?

SHE WALKS PAST JACK AND JENNIFER INTO THE LIVING ROOM. THEY BOTH WATCH HER AND REALIZE THAT SHE DOES NOT HAVE LONG TO GO. JACK LEAVES FOR WORK.

SCENE THREE: JENNIFER, ALICE AND ISABELLA ORGANIZE THE SHOWER. ISABELLA IS IN GREAT PAIN THROUGH THE WHOLE MEETING AND JENNIFER FEELS GUILTY.

SCENE FOUR: JACK ARRIVES AT THE HOSPITAL TO MEET JENNIFER FOR THEIR APPOINTMENT WITH THE OBGYN.

JACK: Yes, yes, I know I'm late. Dr. Manning.

CARLY: Hi Jack.

JACK: Hi.

JENNIFER: Hi.

JACK: Don't tell me, did I miss the appointment?

JENNIFER: No, no, you didn't. The doctor's running late so it's all right, you're fine.

JACK: Good, good, I've missed enough of this pregnancy as it is.

JENNIFER: No, you will be ringside for the main event.

JACK: I plan to be with.... with gloves on.

JENNIFER: Oh no. Well Carly we're going to go see the doctor and check this baby out and you and Bo better get busy because we need a little friend for our little baby to play with here, okay.

CARLY: Yeah. Bye.

JENNIFER: Bye.

JACK: Yes.

SCENE FIVE: A SHORT TIME LATER, JENNIFER IS HAVING AN ULTRASOUND. SHE AND JACK TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE PICTURE.

JENNIFER: Look at this.

JACK: Well obviously it's a picture of a baby and.... and there's the head.

JENNIFER: Oh no Jack, I think that's the other end.

JACK: Oh! Well then that's the....

JENNIFER: NO!

JACK: That would make it a boy.

JENNIFER: Is that it?

JACK: That's it. You're carrying a boy.

JENNIFER: Oh.

DOCTOR: That's the cord.

JACK: Oh I thought it was the....

DOCTOR: I can you the gender if you want.

JENNIFER: Oh no, no, no.

JACK: Yes!

JENNIFER: Well all right.

JACK: No, no, no.

DOCTOR: You don't have to decide right now.

A NURSE COMES IN AND THE DOCTOR HAS TO LEAVE.

JACK: We're done?

DOCTOR: Huh, huh.

JACK: So that means everything is going to be all right?

DOCTOR: Well it appears that the false labor was just that. In fact if anything Jennifer may deliver late.

JENNIFER: What? Ah, what do you mean? How late?

DOCTOR: It's hard to say. Well maybe a few days. Maybe a few weeks. Everything's fine.

THE DOCTOR LEAVES.

JACK AND JENNIFER: A few WEEKS!
