Episode Eighty-seven:
Jack Tries to Stop Steve from
Going to Italy with Marina, but Fails.

[Air date mid-October 1989]

SCENE ONE: JACK DECIDES TO PAY ANOTHER VISIT TO MARINA BEFORE SHE LEAVES FOR ITALY.

JACK: Signorina Marina. I just came by to say hello.

MARINA: And I was just on my way to check out.

JACK: Oh, that's perfect timing. I wanted to wish you a bon voyage.

MARINA: Thank you, that's very kind of you.

JACK: I'm that kind of guy.

MARINA: Would you be kind enough to get that door for me?

JACK: Certainly. I understand that you are not going to be traveling alone.

MARINA: And how did you come to understand that?

JACK: Oh, you know us newspaper guys. We all have.... deep throats.

MARINA: So you came all this way just to find out who my traveling companions might be?

JACK: No. I know who your traveling companions are. I was afraid you don't. I just don't want somebody like you wasting your time.

MARINA: With?

JACK: Trying to take Steve away from Kayla.

MARINA: Jack, Kayla is coming with us.

JACK: Us?

MARINA: Us.

JACK: I see that you're traveling a little light to be traveling so far.

MARINA: The less baggage you have the easier it is to get your connections.

JACK: Hmmm. Well, maybe you have room for a little bit of friendly advice from somebody who knows. It can't work.

MARINA: They have wheels.

JACK LOOKS AT THE BAG IN HIS HAND.

JACK: So they do. But I'm talking about Steve and Kayla. In a world where nothing is impossible, nothing is going to come between them.

MARINA: And just how did you arrive at this philosophical juncture? By virtue of brotherly love?

JACK: By virtue of being her first husband.

MARINA: You?

JACK: Yeah. That's at least one source that I have over you. You look pretty good surprised.

MARINA: Really Jack, please, what does this have to do with my trip to Italy?

JACK: I just want you to know that I understand. After everything I've gone through with Steve and Kayla, I still care.

MARINA: I think you care a little too much if that was your real reason for this little "bon voyage."

JACK: Look, let this be a warning. That if anything happens to Kayla, I'll understand where you're coming from. That won't stop me from coming after you.

MARINA: I see.

JACK: Do you?

MARINA: Well I can't say that I'm not a little jealous, Jack. There's no need for you to worry, please. Let's be friends, alright? Kayla's coming on this trip. I don't see how Steve could ever find the time to be tempted. Will you bring these down?

MARINA WALKS OFF LEAVING JACK WITH ALL HER LUGGAGE AND HE WATCHES HER AS SHE WALKS AWAY.

SCENE TWO: LATER JACK ARRIVES AT STEVE AND KAYLA'S HOUSE. KAYLA [MARY BETH HAS RETURNED] IS SITTING ON THE GARDEN SWING NEXT TO THE FRONT PATH.

JACK: Eh.... Kayla, is Steve.... ah.... I need to--

KAYLA: No, you're too late.

JACK: What are you talking about? What do you mean?

KAYLA: He's gone.

JACK: But what about you?

KAYLA: I don't think that's any of your business Jack.

JACK: (Kneeling down by next to the porch swing) Wait a minute. Are you telling me that you're not going?

KAYLA: Goodnight, Jack.

JACK: No, no. This is crazy. He's leaving you alone and going off to Italy with Marina Toscano.

KAYLA: Why shouldn't he?

JACK: Kayla, look....

KAYLA: Jack why are you so interested in this all of a sudden? What have you got in this?

JACK: Nothing. This is not for me. I just think this is.... I don't know.... I just think this is kind of funny him going off into the wild blue yonder with Marina Toscano.

KAYLA: I already told you that's it's none of your business.

JACK: Look, don't mess around with Marina.

KAYLA: I'm not and neither is Steve.

JACK: Then why the hell is he going off with her?

KAYLA: I don't think I need to answer that.

JACK: Look I don't know what I'm doing here either. I just.... I.... I didn't mean to bother you.

KAYLA: Then go.

JACK: Okay. (Beat) I can't believe you're just going to let him go and not do anything.

KAYLA: Jack, you are the last person I need to tell me how to run my life. Why don't you go and bug somebody else, alright.

KAYLA GOES TO STAND UP BUT FEELS FAINT AND SITS BACK DOWN.

JACK: Wait a minute. Are you alright?

KAYLA: I'm fine. Just go.

JACK: Are you sure? I mean I can get a doctor. I can get Neil.

KAYLA: No, I'm fine really. Thank you.

JACK: Okay, okay, if you're sure.

KAYLA: Just go please.

JACK: Alright.

JACK LEAVES.

SCENE THREE: NEIL HAS VISITED KAYLA AND IS LEAVING. A MOMENT LATER WITH TWO BAGS JACK WALKS AROUND OF GROCERIES, HE LOOKS AROUND AS IF NOT WISHING TO BE SEEN. HE THEN OPENS THE DOOR AND WALKS IN. KAYLA IS SITTING ON THE COUCH IN THE LIVING ROOM.

JACK: (Nervously) Ahhhh.... Kayla. Hi. It's.... It's just me.

KAYLA: Jack!?

JACK: I ran into your grocery boy out there and I grabbed the groceries and.... er.... I was worried about you being alone while Steve is in Italy.

KAYLA: How many times do I have to tell you that it's none of your business.

JACK: Twice is enough. Look I saw Neil leaving. I'm glad you saw him.

KAYLA: I really don't want to talk about it.

JACK: You're pregnant! You're pregnant, aren't you? Look if Steve knew you were pregnant, he wouldn't be heading to Italy right now. He wouldn't.

KAYLA: Get out of here Jack.

JACK: Kayla, I just want to help you.

KAYLA: Get out please.

JACK: I just want.... I just want to help.

KAYLA: Jack, get out of my house and leave me alone.

JACK LEAVES AND SHUTS THE DOOR.

JACK: (To himself) I'm just going to help.

SCENE FOUR: STEVE ARRIVES AT THE AIRPORT AND MARINA ASKS HIM WHERE KAYLA IS. STEVE SAYS THAT SHE IS NOT COMING. THEY BOARD THE PLANE JUST AS JACK ARRIVES TO TALK TO STEVE.

JACK: Okay, the flight to Naples.

CLERK: I'm sorry sir, you just missed it.

JACK: No, no, no, no. You don't understand. I have to get on that plane. I have to stop it.

CLERK: That's impossible. The doors have been closed.

JACK: I don't care what they're closed. I.... I have to get on the plane.... I

CLERK: Sir.

JACK: I have to stop it.

[Air date mid-October 1989]

SCENE ONE: JACK IS STILL ARGUING WITH THE AIRLINE CLERK.

CLERK: I'm sorry sir, you can't go down there. The plane has already started to....

JACK: I'm telling you. This is an emergency. Call the tower. It's a family emergency.

CLERK: Alright. What's the name?

JACK: Johnson. Steve Johnson.

CLERK: I'm sorry sir, there's no listing.

JACK: Toscano. Marina Toscano. Or maybe she's there under d'Angelo.

CLERK: No. There's no one here by that....

JACK: Oh, let me look. It's got to be here somewhere.

JACK GRABS THE MANIFEST FROM THE CLERK AND BEGINS FLIPPING PAGES.

JACK: Dammit, where are they?

SCENE TWO: MEANWHILE STEVE AND MARINA HAVE BOARDED A PRIVATE JET. STEVE WANTS TO KNOW WHY THEY GOT OFF THE REGULAR FLIGHT AND ONTO A PRIVATE JET. MARINA SAYS IT IS BECAUSE A STORM IS CLOSING IN AND THIS WAY THEY CAN TAKE OFF FASTER BEFORE IT HITS.

SCENE THREE: KAYLA, MEANWHILE, HAS DECIDED THAT MAYBE JACK IS RIGHT AND THAT SHE SHOULD TELL STEVE THAT SHE IS PREGNANT. SHE HEADS FOR THE AIRPORT. MARCUS IS VISITING HER AND HE OBJECTS TO HER GOING. SHE DRIVES OFF AND HE STAYS AT THE HOUSE. AS HE GOES INSIDE. A YOUNG WOMAN WALKS UP TO THE DOOR AND LOOKS INSIDE.

SCENE FOUR: BACK AT THE AIRPORT.

JACK: Look I don't care if he's on the sheet. (Pointing) He's on the plane. I'll tell you that much.

JACK TRIES TO GET PAST THE CLERK.

CLERK: Sir, regulations....

JACK: I don't care about your regulations, alright. Do you know who I am? Do you?

SHE SHAKES HER HEAD.

JACK: Well, have you ever read The Spectator? No I guess not. I'm wasting my time talking to you. They're going down the runway right now. I'll tell you what. I'm going to find somebody in charge and then you'll see how easy it is to stop them. Wait a minute.

JACK SEES VICTOR AND HIS BODYGUARD NICO TALKING TO AN AIRPORT OFFICIAL. HE HIDES SO VICTOR DOES NOT SEE HIM BUT HEARS THE CONVERSATION ABOUT VICTOR CHANGING THE NAVIGATOR ON STEVE'S FLIGHT.

JACK: Private plane?

JACK THEN DECIDES TO TALK TO VICTOR AND SEE IF HE CAN GET MORE INFORMATION.

JACK: Victor, hi. Hello.

VICTOR: Jack, it's been a long time.

JACK: Yeah, I was just saying that myself. You know I said the other day. I wonder how Victor's doing?

VICTOR: He's doing very well thank you.

JACK: Great, great. You going on vacation? I mean it's not usual that you'll take a commercial flight, is it?

VICTOR: No, I don't, usually.

JACK: So, what's so special about tonight?

VICTOR: You seem very interested Jack.

JACK: Oh, well, you know, it kind of comes along with the press pass. A perpetual case of curiosity.

VICTOR: Well let's hope the condition doesn't prove fatal for you. Curiosity is a very questionable character trait.

VICTOR WALKS AWAY LEAVING JACK VERY UNEASY.

JACK: Ah.... have a good night.

AS HE IS WATCHING VICTOR, THE AIRLINE CLERK WALKS BY AND JACK GRABS HER ARM.

JACK: Hey, hey, wait a minute. I'm going to give you one more chance, alright. You can redeem yourself. I want the names and numbers of every small private plane that's leaving tonight.

SHE GIVES JACK A LOOK OF FRUSTRATION.

JACK: (Cont.) Come on, go ahead, hurry up. Don't you know who I am. (Beat) No.

SCENE FIVE: STEVE AND MARINA ARE STILL ARGUING ABOUT THE TRIP WHILE WAITING TO TAKE OFF. JACK MANAGES TO GET ON BOARD.

JACK: Steve, Steve, are you in there? Oh, good, I'm glad I found you. Hello, Marina.

STEVE: (To Marina) Well, so everything's on the up and up, eh?

MARINA: I don't know what he's doing here? WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?

STEVE: Let's just find out.

JACK: Steve, Steve?

STEVE GRABS JACK BY THE COLLAR.

STEVE: WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS?

JACK: I don't know anything, nothing.

STEVE: Somebody better start telling me the truth around here.

JACK: Look, I swear to you. I've spent the last half hour trying to track you down.

STEVE: What for?

JACK: Look, you can't go back to Italy. You can't go there.

STEVE: What are you talking about?

JACK: Look, you have to stay here with Kayla, right.

STEVE: Why? What are you.... what does Kayla have to do with this?

JACK: Look, things are not what they seem. I just ran into Victor Kiriakis out there. He's very interested in the comings and goings of a certain small private plane.

STEVE: This isn't the only private plane flying out of here, is it?

JACK: Steve, look maybe I'm full of it. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

STEVE: Look when are you going to learn to stay out of my business?

JACK: I can't stay out of your business as long as I know that you've got to get back to Kayla.

STEVE: I told you before and I'm going to tell you one more time. Don't tell me what to do with my wife! She's the one that wanted me to take this trip. You didn't know that, did you?

JACK: That's before....

JACK STOPS DELIBERATELY KNOWING THAT HE SHOULD NOT BE THE ONE TO TELL STEVE THAT KAYLA IS PREGNANT.

STEVE: What?

JACK REMAINS SILENT BUT IT IS OBVIOUS HE KNOWS SOMETHING. STEVE HITS HIM ON THE CHEST.

STEVE: WHAT?

SCENE SIX: MEANWHILE KAYLA HAS ARRIVED AT THE AIRPORT. A STORM IS BREWING BUT SHE RUNS OUT ON THE LANDING LOOKING FOR STEVE'S PLANE. AN AIRPORT WORKER SEES HER AND TELLS HER THAT IT IS AN EMERGENCY AND SHE MUST TALK TO HER HUSBAND ON THAT PLANE. HE GIVES HER HIS AIRPORT WALKIE TALKIE WHICH IS IN CONTACT WITH STEVE'S PLANE.

SCENE SEVEN: BACK ON THE PLANE.

STEVE: What are you trying to tell me Jack?

JACK: All I'm saying is that you've got to stay here with Kayla.

STEVE: Why?

JACK: Trust me.

STEVE: Trust you? You want me to trust you? What is this Jack?

JACK: I'm telling you, I'm telling you, that you've got to stay....

STEVE: Yeah, I know what you're telling me. You're telling me you smell money and you want me out of the way so you and Miss Thing can get on with your treasure hunt.

JACK: No, that's not it at all.

STEVE: No? What is it then?

JACK: No. I'm telling you, as soon as you left.... I went up to your house alright. Alright. I went up to your house and....

AS JACK IS TALKING THEY BOTH HEAR KAYLA'S VOICE ON THE RADIO. JACK IS SURPRISED TO HEAR HER AND THAT SHE CHANGED HER MIND ABOUT COMING WITH STEVE.

KAYLA: Are you there Steve?

STEVE: I'm right here baby. What's wrong?

KAYLA: Is Jack there with you?

STEVE: (Suspicious of Jack) Yeah, he's sittin' right here.

KAYLA: Did you talk to him? Did he tell you?

STEVE: I can't hear you baby. There's too much static.

KAYLA: I was trying to say.... (Her voice is drowned out with static from the storm.

KAYLA TELLS STEVE THAT SHE IS SORRY JACK HAD TO BE THE ONE TO TELL HIM BUT IT IS TRUE. STEVE CANNOT HEAR ANY OF IT BUT STEVE RESPONDS TO HER QUESTION ABOUT JACK.

STEVE: Don't worry about Jack, okay. He's not going to be a problem.

THE STATIC DROWNS OUT BOTH THEIR VOICES.

JACK: Look, Steve, you've got to go out there and talk to her.

STEVE: I just talked to her and she said everything's alright.

JACK: No, no. You don't understand. She's trying to tell you something.

STEVE: Look I know what she was trying to tell me. She was trying to tell me that you were causing trouble again.

JACK: No, no. That's not it at all. You're turning the whole thing around on me.

PILOT: Once the storm locks in, we're not going anywhere.

STEVE: We heard you. Go ahead and start the engines.

JACK: No, no. You've got to believe me.

STEVE: I don't have to believe anything you say. Now either you get off this plane or I'm going to throw you off somewhere over the Atlantic. Do you understand?

JACK: Yeah, I understand you loud and clear.

STEVE: One more thing. You stay away from Kayla. When I come back back home, if I find out you were anywhere near her, I'm going to beat the crap out of you. You hear me?

JACK: Yeah, I hear you. Fine. Have a great time. Marina, take care of him. I know you will.

JACK WALKS OFF THE PLANE REALIZING THAT STEVE WILL NEVER BELIEVE HIM OR TRUST HIM.

SCENE EIGHT: SOMEWHERE THE MYSTERY WOMAN, WHO WAS HANGING AROUND STEVE AND KAYLA'S HOUSE, IS LOOKING AT HERSELIF IN A MIRROR, SHE THEN FLIPS IT OVER.

SCENE NINE: MARINA TELLS STEVE SHE IS GLAD HE IS COOLING OFF AND DECIDED TO COME WITH HER. HER TELLS HER THAT HE IS ONLY COMING WITH HER TO GET WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR SO SHE WILL GET OUT OF HIS LIVES. JUST THEN THERE IS AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT THEY HAD TO WAIT FOR THE NEW NAVIGATOR WHO JUST ARRIVED. THIS IS WHAT VICTOR WAS PLANNING. STEVE IS GETTING SUSPICIOUS, REMEMBERING WHAT JACK TOLD HIM. THOUGH HE STAYS ANYWAY.

SCENE TEN: STEVE AND MARINA TAKE OFF FOR ITALY. JACK STANDS WITH KAYLA, OUTSIDE OF THE AIRPORT TERMINAL, IN THE RAIN.

JACK: Hey, Kayla. (To the airport official) Get out of the way. You don't know who I am. Beat it.

KAYLA: Jack! You had no right to tell him.

JACK: Kayla, listen. I didn't tell him a thing. I promise you.

KAYLA: It doesn't matter now. He knows he heard it from me.

JACK: Look Kayla, he didn't.

KAYLA: It doesn't matter.

JACK: Kayla, listen to me.

KAYLA: When he gets back, he can take care of everything.

JACK: Kayla, he didn't hear you.

KAYLA: What?

JACK: I knew what you were trying to tell. I tried to get him to come out here but he wouldn't listen to me. There was too much static. He still doesn't know. (Beat) Come on, go ahead, you can still stop him. You came out here to tell him you were pregnant, didn't you?

KAYLA: I came here to stop you.

JACK: What do you mean?

KAYLA: I didn't want him to hear it from you.

JACK: That doesn't make any sense. Why can't you tell him that you're pregnant?

KAYLA: No. Because if he knew he wouldn't go on that flight. He wouldn't go with Marina and it would never be over with. I want Steve to come back to me and our baby with nothing hanging over his head. Maybe that can happen now.

JACK AND KAYLA STAND IN THE STORM AND WATCH THE PLANE TAKE OFF.
