SCENE ONE: SHANE, WHO WAS BELIEVED KILLED DURING THE
EXPLOSION WHEN HE AND STEVE WERE TRYING TO BRING DOWN COL.
JERICHO AND REV. TAYLOR'S SUPREMICIST GROUP, IS ALIVE AND HAS
AMNESIA. HE IS WANDERING AROUND WITH A WOMAN NAMED REBECCA.HE
WANTS TO GO TO CHICAGO BUT SHE MAKES EXCUSES. SHE POSSIBLY KNOWS
WHO HE IS AND DOES NOT WANT HIM TO REMEMBER.
SCENE TWO: A MAN RINGS KAYLA'S DOOR, AND TELLS HER HE IS GOING
TO TAKE HER TO "HER HUSBAND." SHE ASKS IF STEVE
SENT HIM. HE REPLIES, "HE NEEDS YOUR *RIGHT* AWAY! THERE'S
A PLANE WAITING AT THE AIRPORT TO FLY YOU TO ITALY." SHE
WONDERS IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO HIM. THE MAN TELLS HER
THAT HE KNOWS NOTHING ELSE. SHE AGREES TO GO WITH HIM.
SCENE THREE: KIM IS WITH CAL WINTERS [I BELIEVE THERE AT THE
SITE OF THE EXPLOSION]. HE IS DIGGING AND BELIEVES HE HAS FOUND
SCENE FOUR: JENNIFER HAS RETURNED WITH EMILIO AFTER
INTERVIEWING PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. SHE IS VERY
IMPRESSED WITH THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THEIR WORK HELPING EACH
OTHER AND THE NEIGHBORHOOD. "YOUR THE BEST OF ALL!"
SHE TELLS HIM. SHE TELLS HIM BECAUSE SINCE CHANGED SO HAS THE
NEIGHBORHOOD. WITH SANTOS AND HIS FRIENDS LOCKED UP, EVERYTHING
IS SAFER. SHE TELLS HIM SHE IS NOT WORRIED WITH HIM.
MEANWHILE THE GANG MEMBERS ARE WATCHING THEM. HE HOLDS HER. BUT
IS SHE ENJOYING IT?
SCENE FIVE: KAYLA IS ON THE PRIVATE PLANE, WAITING TO TAKE
OFF. JACK WALKS ON, SURPRISING HER.
JACK: Just on five o'clock. We should be leaving in just
KAYLA: I am not going anywhere with you.
JACK: Kayla, wait a minute. Don't let me stop you from seeing
KAYLA: Why should I believe you? All you ever do is try
to cause me trouble. Why should this be any different.
JACK: Kayla, you used to trust me a long time ago before
all of this stuff happened. I want it to be that way again.
PILOT: Ready for take-off Mr. Deveraux.
JACK: Ah.... um, just a minute. (To Kayla) I'm ready, what
KAYLA: If this is another one of your tricks Jack!
JACK: Kayla, I'll get off this plane right now if it'll
convince you to go to Steve. It's up to you.
KAYLA: Alright, I'm ready.
JACK: WE'RE ALL READY! Just think, you'll be seeing Steve.
You're going to be together.
SCENE SIX: LATER ON THE PLANE JACK OFFERS KAYLA A GLASS OF
KAYLA: I don't want it Jack.
JACK: You have to start taking care of yourself.
KAYLA: I don't need you to tell me how to take care of myself.
JACK: Being angry is really doing you a lot of good isn't
KAYLA: Well, you tricked me into this Jack. You lied to
me and you're not going to get away with it.
JACK: What are you planning to do?
KAYLA: I'm going to tell the pilot to turn this plane around.
JACK: Kayla, you can't get....
JACK REACHES OUT TO HER.
KAYLA: Don't touch me Jack.
JACK: (Pulling back, remembering the rape he is self-consconscious)
Look, we both know how uncomfortable the situation is. How uncomfortable
you are with me.
KAYLA: Then why are you arguing with me?
JACK: Because I'm the only one who's helping you. I'm the
only one who stood up and said you've got to go to Steve. That is
what you want isn't it?
SCENE SEVEN: STILL ON THE PLANE.
JACK: Well, the pilot said we'll be landing in Naples in
a couple of minutes.
KAYLA: Well, good. As soon as he lands, he can turn this
plane around back to Salem because I'm not getting off this plane.
JACK: After coming all this way?
KAYLA: Against my will. First you make that phone call and
then you practically kidnap me.
JACK: That phone call again? Do you mind telling me what
that phone call was about?
KAYLA: You know what it's about Jack.
JACK: No, I don't. And for the record I didn't kidnap you.
I supplied the plane yes but you came here of your own free will.
KAYLA: Well, you had no right to interfere in my life.
JACK: Kayla, stop using me as an excuse not to talk to Steve
about the baby. Yes I will take you back to Salem. That's no problem
but since you're here don't you think you should stay long enough
just to talk to him. Don't tell him about the baby. Just talk to
KAYLA: Alright, I'll stay.
JACK PICKS UP THE PHONE.
KAYLA: What are you doing?
JACK: Calling the hotel. Ah (Pronouncing it very poorly)
buon giorno. Senora, spraken zi.....er English? Good, good. I'm
looking for an American named Steve Johnson. (Beat) Oh, do you know
when he'll be back?
JACK: (Cont. He seems a little worried about what he heard
and it looks like he tries to hide his reaction from Kayla) Oh okay.

SCENE EIGHT: JACK AND KAYLA ARE
NOW AT A RESTAURANT. KAYLA IS SEATED AT A TABLE, JACK
JACK: (Looking at Kayla) What!
KAYLA: (Shrugging) Nothing.
JACK: You keep looking at me like that and say, "Nothing."
KAYLA: Alright, if you must know, I'm just trying
to figure out why are you doing this.
JACK: I think we already talked about this.
KAYLA: But you don't something unless there's something
in it for you.
JACK: That's true. There's always something in it for me.
(Thinking, then he mutters) Family.
KAYLA: (Is unsure if she heard correctly) What did you say?
JACK: (Turning to her, not wanting her to know the reason,
Jack gives a little laugh as if realized and finally admitted
he does care about being a Johnson) Nothing!
(Changing the subject) Look if you are finished with that, maybe
Steve will be back at the hotel.
JACK CALLING TO THE WAITER.
KAYLA: Ah, Giuseppe. Ah.... quando, check!
THE WAITER MOTIONS TO HIM.
JACK: (To Kayla) You still don't want to tell him about
KAYLA: I don't know. I just know I need to see my
SCENE NINE: SOMEWHERE IN THE BAY OF NAPLES STEVE AND MARINA
ARE IN A BOAT LOOKING FOR A "KEY." THEY BELIEVE THEY
FOUND THE RIGHT COORDINATES. STEVE TELLS HER THERE IS NO "X"
MARKING THE SPOT, THEY WILL BE DIVING THROUGHTOUT THE NIGHT.
SCENE TEN: BACK AT THE RESTAURANT JACK RELUCTANTLY IS GIVING
A TIP TO THE WAITER.
JACK: Look I said that I would pay for it. I brought you
here and I'll pay for it. Ready to go?
KAYLA: Not quite.
JACK: Look there is nothing to worry about.
KAYLA: Well, I am worrying so don't tell me not too.
JACK: (Smiling) Just like an old married couple. (Beat)
I'm telling you that the only thing Steve is going to be more excited
about other than seeing you, is hearing that you're having his baby.
KAYLA: You're probably right.
JACK: I know I'm right.
KAYLA: But ever since that phone call I've had some terrible
JACK: The one you're saying that I engineered?
JACK: Well, my mind is a real fog. I hope that you can refresh
it. What was it about?
KAYLA: Well, it was a woman's voice I think. She said that
my husband was betraying me.
JACK: I hate to disappoint you but my female impersonations
are not very good. I think it was a couple of teenagers on a prank.
KAYLA: I don't know what to think. If it wasn't you, who
could it have been?
JACK: I don't know. But worrying about it isn't doing any
KAYLA: I can't help it.
JACK: Well, look, as soon as you see Steve, you're going
to forget this whole stupid thing ever happened.
KAYLA: I hope so.
JACK: (Under his breath) So do I.
KAYLA LOOKS A BIT WORRIED BUT WHAT SHE MIGHT DISCOVER
WHEN SHE FINDS STEVE, BUT SHE ALSO SEEMS CONFUSED BY JACK, AS IF
WONDERING IF HE REALLY DOES CARE.
SCENE ELEVEN: UPSTAIRS IN THE HOTEL, MARINA FAKES HAVING A
NIGHTMARE AND CALLS OUT TO STEVE. HE HEARS HER AND COMES RUNNING
INTO HER ROOM TO COMFORT HER. SHE IS WEARING A LACE NEGLIGEE AND
HE HAS NO SHIRT ON.
AT THAT MOMENT, KAYLA AND JACK ARRIVE AT HER DOOR AND SEE STEVE
HOLDING MARINA IN HIS ARMS.
KAYLA IS DEVASTATED RUNS AWAY.JACK FOLLOWS HER.
STEVE TELLS MARINA THAT SHE IS MANIPULATIVE AND LEAVES
HER ALONE IN HER ROOM UNAWARE THAT JACK AND KAYLA SAW HIM.

SCENE ONE: KAYLA IS ON THE PHONE TRYING TO ARRANGE A FLIGHT
BACK TO SALEM
KAYLA: There's just got to be another flight. Well when
is the next flight? What about a charter? (To Jack) What are you
JACK: I'm trying to keep you from making a big mistake.
KAYLA: The only mistake I made was letting you convince
me to come to Italy. Now if you don't mind I have some reservations
JACK: Kayla, I think you should stop for a minute and calm
down and think about this.
KAYLA: I want to go home.
JACK: I think maybe.... look we came here to see Steve.
KAYLA: Oh, I think I saw him.
JACK: I don't think so. I don't think we really saw what
was happening in that room.
KAYLA: Since when did you become Steve's ally.
JACK: I just think that things are not always what they
KAYLA: Oh, you were there with me Jack.
You saw what I saw. What do you think was happening?
JACK: I think maybe you better get a hotel room and get
some rest because you're pregnant and you're exhausted.
KAYLA: I am not tired Jack. I am angry and I am hurt and
I feel like a part of me has just been ripped out.
JACK: I'm sorry.
KAYLA: Are you.... really?
JACK: I didn't bring you all the way to Italy to see you
get hurt like this.
KAYLA: Well, I saw what I saw.
JACK: (Very upset) I think maybe.... just give Steve a chance
KAYLA: You know Jack, I don't need any more advice or favors
from you. All I want to do is go home right now. So you can either
help me get to Salem or I'll just do it myself.
JACK: Is there anything I can say or do to change your mind?
KAYLA WALKS AWAY. JACK LOOKS WORRIED, NOT KNOWING WHAT
TO DO TO FIX THINGS.
SCENE TWO: JACK CALLS TO KAYLA.
KAYLA: So, are you going to help me Jack or shall I go alone?
JACK: (Getting Emotional) I think you need to give Steve
a chance to explain.
KAYLA: And let him lie to me some more?
JACK: No!.... No! I think he's got to tell you what
KAYLA: Marina was in Steve's arms and they were in bed together.
I don't think that needs much explaining.
JACK: Maybe.... maybe she was sick.
KAYLA: Oh, give me a break Jack.
JACK: Look, what.... whatever we saw, whatever really happened,
he's got to know that that's his baby.
KAYLA: I think Steve gave up all his rights when he started
lying to me. Look, Steve and I had an understanding. No lies and
no secrets. He's broken that trust.
JACK: Kayla.... I
KAYLA: I don't want to see Steve now. I can't. I just want
to go home. And if you ever cared about me Jack, please take me
JACK: I'll get the plane. I'm taking you home.
JACK WALKS OUT GET THINGS READY. KAYLA REMAINS.
KAYLA: (In tears) Home.
SCENE THREE: JACK AND KAYLA ARE ON THE PLANE ON THE WAY BACK
TO SALEM. KAYLA HAS FALLEN ASLEEP AND JACK GENTLY TUCKS IN A RUG
AROUND HER. SHE IS DREAMING AND CALLS OUT FOR STEVE.
JACK: I'm sorry Kayla. I'm sorry for everything.
KAYLA WAKES UP.
KAYLA: Did you say something?
JACK: No. (Beat) Are you okay?
JACK: You sure?
SHE NODS AGAIN AND THEY BOTH SIT BACK IN THEIR SEATS CONTEMPLATING
WHAT FRIENDS THEY MIGHT HAVE BEEN.
SCENE FOUR: A SHORT TIME LATER KAYLA IS ONCE AGAIN DREAMING
ABOUT STEVE. JACK WATCHES HER.
JACK: You didn't do it Steve. I know you didn't do it. You
didn't do it.
KAYLA WAKES UP AND HEARS JACK LAST WORDS.
SCENE ONE: [IT IS THE SAME DAY THAT JACK AND KAYLA WENT TO
ITALY, BUT ORIGINALLY AIRED ON A DIFFERENT DAY] JENNIFER ENTHUSIASTICALLY
ENTERS JACK'S OFFICE, THINKING JACK IS THERE, NOT KNOWING HE LEFT
FOR ITALY. SHE SAYS SHE IS READY TO HELP HIM HELP STEVE AND KAYLA.
VERN INFORMS HER THAT JACK IS IN ITALY. JENNIFER CANNOT *BELIEVE*
IT. SHE WAS SUPPOSE TO HELP HIM WITH HIS CASE. JUST THEN EMILIO
SCENE TWO: EMILIO WANTS TO KNOW WHY SHE IS SO UPSET. SHE TELLS
HIM. WHICH CAUSES HIM TO BECOME MORE UPSET WITH JENNIFER. HE ACCUSES
HER OF CARING FOR JACK, AND USING WORK AS AN EXCUSE. JENNIFER
SAYS THAT THERE IS *NOTHING* BETWEEN THEM, SHE JUST IS AN EMPLOYEE.
HE THINKS SHE CARES TOO MUCH FOR HER BOSS. THE MORE HE PUSHES
THE MORE SHE DENIES IT. EMILIO TELLS HER THAT SHE HAS BEEN LEADING
HIM ON, BUT THEN ALWAYS RUNS TO BE WITH JACK. HE WANTS THAT TO
STOP. HE THEN WONDERS WHY SHE HAD JACK STAY AT HER PLACE. SHE
TELLS HIM THAT HE WAS HURT, AND NEEDED A FRIEND. HE STILL DOES
NOT BUY IT. HE WONDERS IF ANYTHING HAPPENED WHEN HE WAS STAYING
WITH HER. SHE SAYS *NO*! HE TELLS HER THAT THE ONLY REASON NOTHING
HAPPENED WAS BECAUSE JACK HAD BROKEN RIBS. THEY BOTH LEAVE IN
DISGUST. BUT IS JENNIFER BEING TRUTHFUL, OR DOES SHE REALLY CARE
SCENE THREE: EMILIO, STILL UPSET, IS PLAYING POOL AT THE CHEATIN'
HEART. JENNIFER COMES IN WEARING STREET CLOTHES. EMILIO WONDERS
WHY THOSE CLOTHES. SHE TELLS HIM THAT SHE WANTS TO HAVE MORE THINGS
IN HER LIFE. EMILIO STARTS QUESTIONING HER ABOUT JACK. SHE CONTINUES
TO DENY SHE HAS FEELINGS FOR JACK. SHE CAN NEVER CARE JACK BECAUSE
OF WHO HE IS, HE PLAYS GAMES AND SHE DOES NOT WANT THAT. SHE TELLS
EMILIO THAT HE DOES NOT DO STUFF LIKE THAT. EMILIO AND SHE KISS.
HAS JENNIFER MADE HER CHOICE?

SCENE ONE: JACK AND KAYLA ARE BACK FROM ITALY AND JACK IS
HELPING KAYLA INSIDE WITH HER BAGS.
KAYLA: Jack, you really didn't have to walk me in.
JACK: Don't worry about. Sit down and put your feet up.
KAYLA: I'm alright.
JACK: You're not alright. You've been upset all the way
back from Italy.
KAYLA: I'm fine now I'm at home.
JACK: Oh really? Prove it to me. Tell me nothing happened
between Steve and Marina.
KAYLA: Do you call my husband in bed with his ex-lover,
JACK: It was nothing. He was sitting on the bed. Both feet
on the floor.
KAYLA: With his arms around her.
JACK: Don't do this Kayla. Don't do it. You're throwing
it all away without talking to Steve.
KAYLA: I have nothing to say to Steve.
JACK: Just talk to him. Pick up the phone. Maybe he has
something to say to you.

WHILE JACK IS UPSTAIRS, KAYLA LISTENS TO HER MESSAGES AND
THERE IS ONE FROM STEVE TELLING HER WHERE HE IS STAYING AND THAT
HE LOVES HER. JACK HEARS THE END OF IT.
JACK: People spend their whole lives trying to get what
you have. Their whole lives.
SCENE TWO: A ROOM WHICH LOOKS LIKE A HOSPITAL ROOM,
THE MYSTERY WOMAN IS THERE WITH SOMEONE WHO APPEARS TO BE
A DOCTOR. HE TELLS HER ABOUT NOT HAVING VISITORS BUT HE
DOES NOT WANT TO "HAVE RAISED EYEBROWS" SO HE WILL ALLOW
DR. HUNTER TO VISIT HER. SHE HAS BEEN SNEAKING OUT AND WAS THE
WOMAN AT STEVE AND KAYLA'S WITH WHOM MARCUS WAS SPEAKING. SHE
IS AGAIN LOOKING AT HERSELF IN A MIRROR, AND THE DOCTOR
GIVES HER A BRUSH AND SHE BEGINS TO BRUSH HER HAIR. SHE
HAS A FAR-AWAY LOOK TO HER.
SCENE THREE: JACK COMES BACK A SHORT TIME LATER TO SEE HOW
SHE IS. SHE IS SITTING ON THE GARDEN SWING OUTSIDE THE FRONT DOOR.
KAYLA: Jack, what are you doing back here?
JACK: I think you know.
KAYLA: I told you I'd be fine.
JACK: Have you called Steve yet?
KAYLA: I don't want to get into this again, Jack.
JACK: I'll take that as a no.
KAYLA: Why do you care if I did or not?
JACK: It's just important, that's all. It's just important.
JACK: You know that.... er.... the little.... the little
baby that you're carrying, I mean that could be my niece or nephew.
And.... er.... I don't know, I just want it to have a happy home.
KAYLA: I don't think that's possible now.
JACK: DAMMIT! Kayla make it possible! We've got to wake
up. I mean what has the last three years of our lives been worth
if not for this? I mean all the lying and the hurting and the pain.
I hate myself for some of.... (Crying) ....for some of the things
I've done. I always thought that somewhere, there's something out
there that's bigger. That's better. Steve and Kayla. Now
Steve and Kayla are going to have a baby.
KAYLA: It's supposed to be one of the happiest times of
JACK: It's going to be. It's got to be Kayla. I know that
and you know that too.
KAYLA: It's not as simple as you make it sound Jack.
JACK: Steve's not trying to hurt you.
KAYLA: He already has.
JACK: No. He's trying to do everything he can to protect
you, to keep from hurting you, so you don't get hurt.
KAYLA: I don't think I'd say everything Jack.
JACK: How do you know? You haven't even called him. What
have you got to lose? I mean you're already convinced that he's
KAYLA: Maybe you're right. Maybe I should hear it from him.
JACK: See, you haven't given up on him yet.
KAYLA: Believe me, I want to find out that you're right
Jack. I want this whole thing to be just a giant misunderstanding.
JACK: Then call him and you'll see that I'm right, that
it is a misunderstanding. Just call him.
KAYLA: I guess I owe him that.
JACK: You owe it to everybody. You owe it to the baby.
KAYLA: Steve and I have been through a lot. I should fight
JACK: That's right. Fight.
KAYLA STANDS UP AND BEGINS TO WALK INSIDE.
JACK: Yes, fight.
KAYLA: I better go and make that call.
KAYLA GOES IN THE DOOR.
JACK: Way to go Kayla. Way to go.
JACK WALKS OVER AND SITS ON THE PORCH RAIL. AS HE DOES SO,
HE KNOCKS A POT PLANT ONTO THE GROUND.
JACK: Oh, Jack. Break one thing, fix another, break another.
HE BENDS OVER TO PICK UP THE PLANT AND PUT IT BACK IN THE
POT AND IN AMONGST THE SOIL HE FINDS A PIECE OF PAPER.
JACK: Wait a minute. What's this? "Marriage License!
Certificate of Marriage of Marina Toscano and Steven Earl Johnson."
Oh no! Steve, you stupid....
KAYLA COMES BACK OUT THE DOOR.
KAYLA: Well, I made the call. He wasn't there.
JACK TRIES TO HIDE THE MARRIAGE LICENSE AND HURRIEDLY PUTS
THE PLANT BACK IN THE POT.
KAYLA: Jack, what are you doing?
JACK: Um.... nothing. I knocked this stupid thing over and
I was.... sorry, I'll fix it. Don't worry about it.
KAYLA: What's that paper?
JACK: Nothing, really. It's just a piece of paper. Don't
worry about it.
KAYLA: (Kayla knows Jack is hiding something) Then
why are you trying to hide it?
JACK: I said, don't worry about it. It's none of your concern.
KAYLA: Why don't you let me decide, Jack?
JACK: (Very reluctantly) Alright. You do.
KAYLA: Steve and Marina were married? Where did you find
JACK: It was out there in the dirt and when I knocked over
the flower pot.... I found it.
KAYLA: Some misunderstanding.
JACK: Kayla.... I....
KAYLA: Jack, could you go?

KAYLA: Could you just go please?
JACK LEAVES. KAYLA GOES INSIDE. SHE STOPS AT THE DOOR AND SAYS,
"WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME STEVE?!"
SCENE FOUR: MONTAGE ENDING, "IF YOUR HEART COMES OUT
TONIGHT," STEVE CALLS HOME. KAYLA IS WALKING DOWN THE STAIRS
OF THEIR HOUSE, CARRYING A SUITCASE. SHE WALKS INTO THE LIVING
ROOM AND LOOKS AT HER AND STEVE'S WEDDING PICTURE.
