[Air date mid-October 1990]

SCENE ONE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE IN BED IN HER ROOM AT THE EMBASSY. THEY HAVE MADE LOVE AND JACK IS KISSING HER.

JENNIFER: Jack?

JACK: Hmmm (Between Kisses)

JENNIFER: I want you to promise me something.

JACK: I'll promise you anything.

JENNIFER: I don't want you to fire me anymore.

JACK: Heh. How can I do that, you don't work for me anymore.

JENNIFER: Promise me, Jack, promise.

JACK: I promise.

HE GOES BACK TO KISSING.

JENNIFER: Wait, no. And no more competition and no more snappy answers.

JACK: I promise.

JENNIFER: Okay, and no more notes.
oldEp199A
JACK LOOKS VERY REMORSEFUL ABOUT THAT.

JENNIFER: And no more waking up alone, promise me. And promise me that you'll never make love and leave me again, promise.

JACK: I'll never never leave you again.

JENNIFER: Okay, and promise....

JACK: I promise, I promise.

JENNIFER: You don't know what I'm going to say.

JACK: It doesn't matter, I promise.

JENNIFER: Promise.

JACK: If you'll excuse me, I think we have a conference call.

JENNIFER: A what?

JACK: A conference call right here.

HE PULLS UP THE BED COVERS AND SNUGGLES DOWN UNDER THEM WITH HER.

JENNIFER: Jack.... Jack.

JACK: It's for you.

JENNIFER STARTS TO GIGGLE AND LAUGH FROM UNDER THE SHEETS.

JACK: Ssssshhhh.

THEN HE GIGGLES TOO.

SCENE TWO: AT THAT MOMENT LAWRENCE COMES TO JENNIFER'S DOOR. HE IS ABOUT TO PUT THE KEY IN THE DOOR WHEN HE HEARS STRANGE NOISES COMING FROM THE ROOM. LUCKILY GREGORY COMES ALONG WITH AN URGENT MESSAGE THAT HE IS NEEDED IN HIS OFFICE. HE IS RELUCTANT TO LEAVE BUT GREGORY INSISTS.

SCENE THREE: BACK IN BED AND STILL UNDER THE COVERS.

JENNIFER: You know Jack, I was ready to walk this time, for real.

JACK: No you weren't.

JENNIFER PULLS BACK THE SHEETS AND THEIR TWO HEADS APPEAR.

JENNIFER: Yes I was. I mean it Jack and you couldn't blame me either.

JACK: Well I guess I couldn't. I mean I wouldn't. I mean, I guess I really don't.... deserve this.

JENNIFER: You're right, but I do. I worked very hard for this Jack but I think it's worth it now that I know how you feel for sure.

JENNIFER SITS WAITING FOR HIM TO REASSURE HER.

JACK: You know something, I think you know how I feel. I think I told you. I told you.

JENNIFER: I don't think you did.

JACK: I think I did.... maybe I didn't. Maybe it was somebody else.

JENNIFER SMILES.

JACK (CONT.): Maybe.... no, no, no, no.

JENNIFER: I think it was somebody else Jack.

JACK: Yeah it had to be you.

JENNIFER: I don't think it was me.

JACK: Yeah I think it had to be you. It had to be you.

JACK SITS UP AND PUTS HIS ARM AROUND HER.

JACK: Um.... Jennifer, I'd like to ask you one thing.

JENNIFER: Anything, I promise.

JACK: Good. I.... want you to come home with me.

JENNIFER: Home?

JACK: Salem, right now, both of us.

JENNIFER: Jack anything else but that. I can't do that. I can't leave, you have to understand that.

JACK IS FRUSTRATED BY HER STUBBORNESS TO CONTINUE WITH THIS PLAN. HE SIGHS HEAVILY.

JACK: Well I guess if you can't, you can't. I understand. You've got to do what you've got to do. (Beat) Alright if you're not going to be sensible, I guess I'll just have to call the police.

JENNIFER: What?

JACK: I'm going to tell the police that an American is being held against her will in a foreign embassy.

JENNIFER: Well I'll just tell them that I want to be here. Besides police have no authority once they're inside an embassy, Jack.

JACK: Jennifer, would you just wake up!

JENNIFER: No you have to understand that I am not leaving here until I find out what Lawrence is planning to do in Salem.

JACK: Alright, okay, I've heard that before. It's one excuse too many cause I've heard a lot of them. But I'm beginning to think that maybe there is another excuse, I mean the real excuse you're putting yourself through all this.

JENNIFER LOOKS VERY SUSPICIOUS AND JACK KNOWS SHE IS HIDING SOMETHING.

JACK: There is another excuse, isn't there? What is so important that you are willing to put your life, not to mention mine, on the line?

JENNIFER DOES NOT ANSWER.

JACK: Is this pause for dramatic effect?

JENNIFER: Jack, I made a promise.

JACK: A promise. To who, what?

JENNIFER: Look I just can't leave now. You have to understand that.

JACK HAS NOW HAD IT WITH HER EXCUSES.

JACK: Okay if you can't, you can't.

JENNIFER: I'm sorry, I can't.

JACK: Oh no, no, no, no. That's okay.

HE LEANS DOWN UNDER THE SHEETS FEELING FOR HIS BOXER SHORTS AND THEN PROCEEDS TO PUT THEM ON AND PULL THEM UP.

JACK: You got a secret, you have to keep it, you made a promise, that's important. A person has to do what a person has to do.

JENNIFER: Thankyou.

JACK: Oh, no, no, no. You're welcome. You've got to do what you have to do.... and I have to do what I have to do.

JACK HOPS OUT OF BED AND WALKS OVER TO GET HIS T-SHIRT.

JENNIFER: What do you mean by that?

JACK: Aaaah, what do I mean by that. I mean I've got to do what I've got to do.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute Jack, I'm just trying to explain.

JACK: Heheheh. Jennifer, I'm going to call Steve.

SCENE FOUR: BACK IN SALEM, BO HAS FOUND STEVE ON THE PIER. HE IS SEVERELY INJURED AND HE IS RUSHED TO UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL BUT THERE LOOKS LIKE LITTLE CHANCE THAT HE WILL SURVIVE.

SCENE FIVE: LAWRENCE GETS THE MESSAGE THAT STEVE WAS HURT AND HE IS ANGRY BECAUSE THE BOMB WAS MEANT FOR BO.

SCENE SIX: BACK IN THE EMBASSY.

JENNIFER: Jack, wait a minute, I am not going to let you call Steve. There is no way, it's too risky. Besides Lawrence is too smart. I'm surprised he hasn't caught up with you and your antics.

JACK PULLS ON HIS T-SHIRT AND POURS HIMSELF A GLASS OF WATER. HE IS A LITTLE ANGERED BY HER COMMENTS.

JENNIFER: I mean you've got to trust me about this. I have a feeling about this whole thing.

JACK: Jennifer, you trust your feelings and I will trust mine.

JENNIFER: Jack you don't understand.

JACK: This is not up for argument alright. At least I'm honest enough to know when I'm in over my head. I'm trying to get you out of here in one piece and I need Steve's help to do it. Okay where's my shirt?

JENNIFER: Why, why do you want your shirt?

JACK: Well I can't make a phone call from here can I? I have to change clothes and get back to the hotel because everything's bugged. Oh there it is. That's okay.

JENNIFER: Alright Jack, okay.

JACK: Okay, what?

JENNIFER: Alright, go back to the hotel and call Steve and ask for his help, alright. But you have to make me a promise.

JACK: A promise. I feel like I've been promising all day.

JENNIFER: Look, no one else can know but Steve. Swear to me.

JACK: Swear to you. Is a swear more important than a promise?

JENNIFER: Jack, please.

JACK: Alright, alright, I'll swear. I swear and I promise. Are you satisfied?

JENNIFER: Yeah I'm satisfied.

JACK: Good, because I'm not. I'm looking for my stuff.

THERE IS A KNOCK AT THE DOOR AND JACK AND JENNIFER FREEZE AND STARE AT EACH OTHER.

LAWRENCE: Katerina, it's Lawrence. Katerina?

SCENE SEVEN: BACK IN SALEM, BO COMES TO WINGS TO TELL KAYLA THAT STEVE IS BADLY INJURED. SHE RUSHES FROM THE FAREWELL PARTY TO THE HOSPITAL ALONG WITH JO AND ADRIENNE.

oldEp200C
SCENE EIGHT: AT THE EMBASSY, JACK HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO HIDE. HE GATHERS UP HIS THINGS AND CLIMBS OUT ON THE WINDOW SILL WHILE JENNIFER GOES TO THE DOOR. LAWRENCE IS SUSPICIOUS BECAUSE IT TOOK "KATERINA" SO LONG TO ANSWER THE DOOR. SHE TELLS HIM SHE IS IN HER ROBE BECAUSE SHE WAS HAVING AN AFTERNOON NAP. SHE SEES ONE OF JACK'S SOCKS ON THE BED AN STUFFS IT DOWN HER FRONT SO THAT LAWRENCE WILL NOT SEE IT. HE ASKS HER TO DINNER AND WAITS WHILE SHE DRESSES. THE WINDOW IS STILL OPEN, AND HE LOOKS AT IT SUSPICIOUSLY; THEN SHUTS IT. JENNIFER COMES OUT OF THE BATHROOM, HAVING DRESSED IN RECORD TIME TO GET HIM OUT OF THE ROOM.

MEANWHILE ON THE WINDOW SILL OUTSIDE JACK IS LEANING BACK AND IS SCARED TO DEATH. HE IS ALMOST DRESSED BUT IS MISSING ONE SOCK.

JACK: I hate it when this happens. No matter how many times I do it, I still hate it.

AFTER LAWRENCE AND JENNIFER LEAVE THE ROOM, JACK CLIMBS BACK IN THE WINDOW.

JACK: Aaaah, okay.

HE LOOKS UNDER THE BED FOR HIS FAKE BEARD AND MOUSTACHE AND HIS RIFLE. THEN HURRIES OVER TO THE MIRROR TO PUT HIS BEARD BACK ON.

JACK: Alright, step one is taken care of, now to step two. Boy Steve I hope you're ready for this cause I know I'm not.

SCENE NINE: JACK IS BACK IN HIS HOTEL, HE PICKS UP THE PHONE TO CALL STEVE.

JACK: Alright, come on Steve, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.

THERE IS NO ANSWER.

JACK: Where the hell are you? (Beat) Jo, Jo, okay. Jo knows, Jo knows. Oh hi, I'm trying to get a hold of Jo Johnson, could you tell me.... heheheh, well if she's not there doing windows, where is she?

JACK LISTENS SILENTLY AS THE PERSON ON THE PHONE TELLS HIM SOMETHING. JACK'S FACE TURNS FROM A SMILE TO A VERY WORRIED FROWN.

JACK: Please give me the number.

BACK IN SALEM, KAYLA, JO, ADRIENNE, JUSTIN AND BO ARE WAITING AT THE HOSPITAL FOR NEWS ON STEVE. MARCUS IS OPERATING ON HIM TO TRY AND SAVE HIS LIFE. CARLY, ISABELLA AND ROMAN ARRIVE TO FIND OUT MORE OF WHAT HAPPENED. THE PHONE AT THE NURSE'S STATION RINGS AND IT IS FOR JO.

JO: Hello.

JACK: Jo, is that you?

JO: Oh Jack.

JACK: Alright, okay, wait, what is this family emergency?

JO: It's your brother.

JACK: Is it Steve, what?

JO: You better get back her right away. They don't know if....
oldEp200D
JACK: What? They don't know what, what?

JO: Well.... well he might not.... they said if he....

JACK: Okay, wait.... Jo.... wait. I'll be on the next plane out alright.

JO: Oh Billy, please.

JACK: I'll be.... don't worry about a thing. Jo, I'm going to be there, everything's going to be alright, Steve's going to be A okay. He'll be fine alright. I'll be there on the next plane.

JACK HANGS UP.

JACK: (Trying to reassure himself) He's going to be fine.

JACK HURRIES BACK TO THE EMBASSY TO TELL JENNIFER WHAT HAS HAPPENED.

SCENE TEN: HE ARRIVES TO THE EMBASSY GATES, WEARING HIS TRENCH COAT, HAT AND GLASSES.

JACK: (Speaking in his faux-German accent) Please to excuse. I know I am late.

THE GUARD STOPS HIM ENTERING.

JACK: Heheheh. I believe there's a misunderstanding here. You do not recognize me out of uniform. Let me remind you. I am....

GUARD: No longer allowed on these premises.

JACK: Oh, there has been a mistake. Let me remind you who I am.

JACK CAREFULLY PUTS ON HIS GLASSES.

JACK: I work here.

GUARD: You did work here. Now I have orders to shoot you if should you make the slightest attempt to pass. And I hope you do, please.

JACK: Heheheheh. (Speaking in his normal voice) Alright, alright, I'm an American. I.... you're right, I'm an American, you got me. And let me tell you something. I'm about to do a very American thing. I'm going to offer you a bribe. No offense, no offense at all. I'm not asking for you to let me back in. I just want you to send a message, please, please. Allow me to write it. A big American bribe. Here turn around, trust me, okay.

JACK USES THE GUARD'S BACK TO LEAN ON WHILE HE WRITES THE NOTE. JACK HATES THE IDEA OF LEAVING HER THERE ALL ALONE, AND FEELS BAD ABOUT WRITING HER A NOTE AND THEN LEAVING, AFTER JUST PROMISING NEVER TO DO THAT AGAIN.

JACK: (Talking to the Guard) Alright, this will just take two shakes of a lamb's tail, huh. American saying.... (To himself) message and I told Jennifer.... no more notes. Heh. Right, well. (Writing) "Steve in trouble back home, will return ASAP." Yes, that should do it. Right, okay, now this is for you.... yes. (Handing the note to the Guard) This is for Katerina, alright. Take that right up to her.... come on, for old time's sake. Take it. Alright, there you go. That's the moral fiber that made your country great, huh. Alright, take it right up to her and we'll all be happy. Okay I'm going to turn around now and we're going to make everybody happy.

AFTER GIVING THE GUARD THE NOTE AND EXTRA MONEY, JACK TURNS HIS BACK TO HIM AND RAISES HIS HANDS.

JACK: I'm going now. I'm not coming back. Don't shoot me please. Please don't shoot me. I promise I'm never coming back. I'm.... I'm.... I'm going home.

SCENE ELEVEN: BACK IN THE EMBASSY, LAWRENCE BRINGS JENNIFER BACK TO HER ROOM AND SHE HOPES THAT JACK GOT AWAY SAFELY. WHEN JACK LEFT HE FORGOT TO SHUT THE WINDOW, LAWRENCE NOTICES THIS. JENNIFER TRIES TO MAKE EXCUSES BY SAYING THAT HER PERSONAL MAID KNOWS SHE LIKES TO SLEEP WITH IT OPEN TO GET FRESH AIR. HE THINKS IT IS FAR TOO COLD FOR THAT. JUST THEN GREGORY COMES IN AND SAYS THAT THE IMPOSTOR HAS BEEN CAUGHT AND DEALT WITH. JENNIFER IS VERY SCARED THAT JACK IS HURT OR WORSE. SHE SHUDDERS AND LAWRENCE TELLS HER, THAT HE WAS RIGHT IT IS MUCH TOO COLD TO KEEP THE WINDOW OPEN. BOTH HE AND GREGORY SHARE A SADISTIC SMILE. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT THEY BOTH KNOW WHAT HAS BEING GOING ON BETWEEN HER AND JACK.

LAWRENCE LEAVES THE ROOM AND MEETS THE GUARD OUTSIDE. HE TELLS LAWRENCE HE HAS A NOTE FOR KATERINA. LAWRENCE TAKES THE NOTE THAT JACK WROTE AND READS IT. THEN HE SCREWS IT UP AND THROWS IT AWAY.

SCENE TWELVE: AT HIS HOTEL, JACK IS TRYING TO GET A FLIGHT HOME.

JACK: No, no, you don't understand. Look I have to be on that plane tonight. I have to be in Salem tonight, you understand that. No ifs, ands or buts, alright.

JACK HANGS UP.

JACK: I have to be there.
