Jennifer and Frankie in a Sleazy Motel, Jack
Gets the Wrong Idea. He and Eve Rush off to
Get Married. Meanwhile, Jennifer Decides
to to Tell Jack about the Rape; Will She
Get There in Time To Stop the Wedding?

[Air early February 1991]

SCENE ONE: FRANKIE HAS MADE JENNIFER STAY IN A ROOM AT THE SAME MOTEL UNTIL SHE TELLS HIM EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WHEN SHE WAS WITH LAWRENCE.

JENNIFER: Didn't you just hear me? Didn't you hear what I said? I slept with Lawrence, I went to bed with him.

FRANKIE: Yes I hear you. But there was more than that Jen. You didn't just sleep with him.

JENNIFER: I don't know what you mean.

FRANKIE: I mean how did it happen? How did you wind up in bed with him?

JENNIFER: What difference does that make?

FRANKIE: It makes a big difference. Come on tell me how it happened.

SCENE TWO: EVE HAS TAKEN JACK TO THE MIDTOWN MOTEL TO SHOW HIM WHERE HE WILL END UP IF HE DOES NOT MARRY HER AND USE NICK'S MONEY TO BUY OUT DIANA AND STOP LAWRENCE. JACK IS OUTSIDE IN THE HALL WITH EVE.

JACK: Listen, you showed me everything outside, alright. Why do you have to show me the inside? Between the squeaking of the mice and the bed springs this place is really disgusting.

EVE: Not so long ago Jack, this place was practically home for me. And you, right.

JACK: Look I'm not in the mood for any kind of lectures with or without the audio/visual aids, thank you very much.

EVE: Look I'm not going give you a lecture okay. Jack, just a prediction alright. Look around. This.... it's either this or getting married Jack. So what's it going to be, the Midtown Motel or yours truly?

MEANWHILE JENNIFER AND FRANKIE.

JENNIFER: Don't make me live through that night again Frankie. I want to forget about it as fast as I can.

FRANKIE: The only way you're going to be able to forget about it is to talk about. Live through it Jen. Don't close up. Come on talk to me.

JENNIFER: I'm scared.

FRANKIE: I know and I also know that you didn't go to bed with him on your own free will. JENNIFER: How can you know that?

FRANKIE: Because that's not the kind of person you are and there is no way you can convince me that you went to bed with him for the heck of it.

JENNIFER: It doesn't matter. I went to bed with him. If I denied that I would be lying Frankie.

FRANKIE TAKES HER ARMS.

FRANKIE: Jen, if you tell me what happened I guarantee I can make you see you didn't just have sex with him.

OUTSIDE IN THE HALL.

EVE: Jack, you didn't answer my question.

JACK: It's just that I've.... I've never heard a proposal put in the form of an ultimatum before.

EVE: Well maybe because the stakes have never been so high before. You can't deny that.

JACK: Well.... the situation is rather.... dire.... so to speak.

EVE: Well then why.... why won't you marry me Jack? I mean I don't think I'm unattractive. I think.... I'm kind of intelligent. I think I'm kind of funny.

JACK: If you do say so yourself.

EVE: And most of all I'm rich.... or at least I could be if you'd just say the word. Come on Jack, I'm offering you millions here. Not to mention saving the newspaper you love so much. Why won't you take me up on my offer?

JACK: Let's.... let's just say I couldn't.... I couldn't stand all that happiness.

EVE: This is isn't about Jennifer is it? I mean you've already told me that you've given up on her. Unless of course you were lying to me. Were you Jack? Were you lying to me about that?

JACK WALKS AWAY FROM HER UP THE HALL A BIT. HE SEES A DOOR OPEN AND GLANCES IN TO SEE FRANKIE HOLDING JENNIFER'S ARMS.

HE PRESUMES THAT THEY ARE THERE FOR A SECRET RENDEZVOUS.

FRANKIE: Come on Jen, come on.

JENNIFER: Frankie, please.

FRANKIE: Come on.

EVE PEEPS HER HEAD IN TO SEE WHAT JACK IS LOOKING AT. THEY ARE BOTH SHOCKED. JACK GRABS EVE AND PULLS HER OUT OF THE WAY.

JACK: Let's go. Let's go. Come on.

EVE: Where are we going?

JACK: Ah.... City Hall. That's where we're going. I've got a clerk down there, a friend of mine who will keep the office open for a few dollars more.
oldEp246C

JACK (CONT.):
I'll get us a license. (Beat) So smile Miss Donavon, today is your wedding day.

EVE SIGHS AND FOLLOWS JACK OUT OF THE MOTEL.

SCENE THREE: IN THE ROOM FRANKIE IS STILL TRYING TO CALM JENNIFER.

FRANKIE: Just try to relax. Now slowly tell me what happened, alright.

JENNIFER: Frankie, listen to me alright....

FRANKIE: Come on, come on Jen. You can do it. Come on.

JENNIFER: Alright, it was our wedding night alright. It was Lawrence's and mine wedding night.

FRANKIE: Okay, did he force you to go to his room?

JENNIFER: No I went to his room by myself.

FRANKIE: Why?

JENNIFER: Because Jack and I were going to escape that night through the tunnels. The only way into these damn tunnels was through Lawrence's room.

FRANKIE: Okay so you went to Lawrence's room to meet Jack.

JENNIFER: Yes! I was waiting for Jack to get there. Jack never showed up alright. Lawrence showed up so what was I supposed to do. I had to pretend that I was there to meet him.

FRANKIE: Of course, you couldn't let him know you were there to meet Jack.

JENNIFER: No. So there was champagne on the table so I suggested that we start drinking the champagne.

FRANKIE: What were you thinking?

JENNIFER: I don't know what I was thinking. I was afraid he was going to hurt Jack. I was afraid he was going to do something. So I handed him a glass and I pretended that I was happy.

FRANKIE: You pretended to go along with this wedding thing.

JENNIFER: Yes. I was hoping and I was praying that Jack would come back in but he didn't. I didn't know what to do next. I led Lawrence to believe that I wanted to make love with him. I didn't know it was going to go that far.

FRANKIE: Go on.

JENNIFER: I don't know what happened after that alright. He was kissing me and he was touching me.

FRANKIE: Alright, after he was kissing you, after you got the feeling that he wanted to sleep with you, what happened then, did you say anything to him?

JENNIFER: WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MATTER WHAT I WOULD SAY? He reacted like any man. I led him on and he responded to it. It's my fault and I'm to blame for what happened that night.

SCENE FOUR: IN TOWN EVE STOPS BY A FLOWER SELLER AND BUYS A SMALL BUNCH OF FLOWERS WHILE JACK LOOKS THE MARRIAGE LICENSE.

JACK: As long as there is a dishonest man who will take money down at City Hall, there is hope for the world. Excuse me, what are you doing?

EVE: Well if you must know, I am buying flowers for my wedding. Every girl, even a girl like me, dreams about her wedding day. Since this may be the only time I get married I want flowers, alright.

JACK: It's your nickel. Go right ahead. Er...what...what's this for?

EVE PUTS A CARNATION IN THE LAPEL OF JACK'S COAT.

EVE: It's a boutonniere for the groom

JACK: Wait a minute, wait a minute. If you really want to play bride and groom, let's really play bride and groom. Right this way.

EVE: Where are we going?

JACK: Follow me, just follow me. Let's go.

JACK DRAGS EVE INTO JORDAN'S JEWELRY STORE.

JACK: Excuse me, excuse me. We're looking for a wedding ring and that is perfect. Thank you very much.

HE GRABS A LARGE GAUDY DIAMOND RING OUT OF THE HAND OF ANOTHER CUSTOMER.

JACK: (To the couple) It wouldn't fit you anyway. (To the manager) This one right here.

MANAGER: Oh, our Las Vegas style.
oldEp246D
JACK: Oh yes, it's very Liberace. Perfect.

EVE: It's incredible.

JACK: And.... expensive.

MANAGER: It's very nice. Take your time, think about it.

EVE: Alright.... I....

JACK: Yes.... well.... well.... ah.... just put it on and try not to blind yourself.

EVE: Why are you doing this?

JACK: Well it's obvious. We have to look like the real article. We have to sell Julie on this and you know wants to marry a woman, you know, he.... he gets her a ring.

EVE: Right.

JACK: A very expensive ring.

EVE:

JACK: But not to worry. Put that on the tab too. I mean as soon as Julie approves of us and you're able to collect on your inheritance, money is no object, right. No object at all.

EVE: Right.

MANAGER: Shall I bill you Mr. Deveraux?

JACK: Ah.... honey bunch?

EVE: It's beautiful.

JACK: Hahahah. We'll take it. Oh yes and do you have one of those little.... wedding rings?

EVE: Wedding ring, yes.

MANAGER: With even more rocks on it.

THE MANAGER HANDS JACK A BIG SHINY DIAMOND STUDDED WEDDING RING.

JACK: Oh, goodie. Here you go.

EVE: Thank you.

JACK: Sure.

MANAGER: You're welcome.

JACK: Thanks a lot. See you next time.

EVE GIVES JACK A NASTY LOOK FOR SUGGESTING THE MARRIAGE WILL NOT LAST.

JACK: I mean.... I was kidding. That was a joke. That was just a joke.

EVE: Oh.

JACK: Goodbye.... goodbye.

MANAGER: Goodbye, congratulations.

JACK: Thank you. See you on the fiftieth. Right this way darling. Right this way.

EVE: Thank you.

THEY GO OUTSIDE AND JACK IMMEDIATELY GETS BACK TO BUSINESS.

JACK: Alright, let's get this over with.

JACK WALKS OFF BUT EVE STOPS TO LOOK AT HER NEW RINGS.

JACK: Miss Donovan, this way, please. Hurry!

EVE: COMING JACK!

SCENE FIVE: BACK AT THE MIDTOWN MOTEL, FRANKIE IS TRYING TO CONVINCE JENNIFER THAT SHE WAS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RAPE.

FRANKIE: Don't you dare blame yourself for what happened.

JENNIFER: Look, Lawrence said that I was responsible and it's all because of me and he's right.

FRANKIE: No, he's wrong, dammit. He's wrong for what he did to you and he's wrong for blaming you.

JENNIFER: Didn't you hear one word that I said? I STARTED IT. I LED HIM TO BELIEVE THAT I WANTED....

FRANKIE: But for how long.... how long Jen? Come on, did you make him think that you wanted to go through with it?

JENNIFER: Look I offered him champagne.... I....

FRANKIE: Look you're not answering my question. Did you make him think you wanted to go through with it or did you tell him to stop?

JENNIFER: That doesn't matter Frankie.

FRANKIE: It does matter. Did you make him stop, did you say anything?

JENNIFER: It still doesn't change anything....

FRANKIE: DID YOU TELL HIM TO STOP?

JENNIFER: YES, OF COURSE I DID. OF COURSE I DID. I told him to leave me alone, over and over.

FRANKIE: And what else Jen? Come on, what else?

JENNIFER IS ALMOST TOO UPSET TO TALK. SHE IS SOBBING AND CRYING.

JENNIFER: I told him.... that he was.... hurting me.... and I.... wanted him to stop cause I couldn't take it anymore. I begged him to stop.

FRANKIE: But.... he didn't, right.

JENNIFER: (Whisper) He raped me. Lawrence raped me.

FRANKIE: Jen....

JENNIFER: He hurt me. He hurt me so bad. I live with it everyday. I keep seeing it and I keep feeling it. It never stops hurting.

RANKIE: Jen, I am so sorry. I am so sorry.

JENNIFER: I guess you feel a little differently about me now than when you first met me.

FRANKIE: No. Yes you've changed but you dare think because you were raped that I feel any different about you Jen.

HE GOES TO TOUCH HER BUT SHE PULLS AWAY.

JENNIFER: Don't touch me Frankie, please. Don't.

FRANKIE: Look I know that you've been through a lot but that doesn't change the way I feel about you or the way anybody else is going to feel about you, Jen.

JENNIFER: You say that now Frankie, but after a while, you'll see.

FRANKIE: I've known for a while Jen.

JENNIFER: You what?

FRANKIE: I've known for a while. I overheard you on the phone talking to Dr. Baker.

JENNIFER: Wait a minute, you didn't say anything.

FRANKIE: I couldn't Jen. I couldn't. You had to be the one to tell me so I waited until you were ready.

JENNIFER: You knew this whole time?

FRANKIE: What could I do? I couldn't force you to tell me anything. I couldn't even help. All I could do was wait, Jen, that's all. You've got to believe me, it was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. It was the only way.

JENNIFER: That's why you were so anxious to get the von Leuschner money for my divorce.

FRANKIE: That's right. I didn't want him to be married any longer than he had to, to you.

JENNIFER: I'd still be married if it weren't for you. You gave up your whole families inheritance Frankie.

FRANKIE: I didn't want you to be hurting anymore. We have been friends for a long time and I will do anything to get that creep off your back so you could be happy again.

JENNIFER: I can't be that way Frankie. He destroyed every bit of happiness that I could have. It will never be that way.

FRANKIE: It doesn't have to be that way.

JENNIFER: I am never going to be able to let go of this. You don't understand.

FRANKIE: Yes. But there is one Jen, one way. Go to Jack. Tell him what you've told me.

SCENE SIX: MEANWHILE, JACK AND EVE HAVE GONE BACK TO THE PENTHOUSE TO PREPARE FOR THEIR WEDDING. JACK IS OPENING ANOTHER BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE AFTER DRINKING A COUPLE ALREADY.
oldEp246E
JACK: Ah.... here we go.

HE POURS A GLASS AND SWIGS IT DOWN IN ONE GULP. AT THAT MOMENT, EVE COMES OUT DRESSED IN A WHITE LACE GOWN.

EVE: Isn't that supposed to be for after the wedding Jack?

JACK: I.... I.... couldn't wait. How about you?

EVE: No thank you.

JACK: Suit yourself.

HE TURNS AROUND AND SEES HER DRESS AND SHE SWINGS ROUND TO SHOW IT OFF.

JACK: Ah, well I'll say one thing. I'm glad you have a sense of humor about this. (Beat) You're wearing white.... a white dress, you know.

EVE: I know, yes.

JACK: It's great, great.

SHE KNOWS HE DOES NOT MEAN IT.

EVE: Thank you.

THE DOOR RINGS AND IT IS THE PHOTOGRAPHER.

EVE: I'll get it since you're so busy. (At the door) Ah hi, just a minute. There's a photographer here Jack.

JACK: Ask him if he wants something to drink.

EVE: What is he doing here?

PHOTOGRAPHER: I thought this was a wedding.

JACK: Oh and it certainly is my good man. Right this way, here you go.

JACK GIVES THE GUY A GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE.

JACK: Welcome to the nuptials.

EVE: I'm sorry, is this some kind of a joke here Jack.

JACK: Well, cosmic perhaps but I don't hear anybody laughing upstairs yet.

EVE: You're right. (To photographer) I'm sorry but we're going to have to ask you to leave. There's been some kind of mistake.

JACK: Oh, oh, oh. Excuse us just a moment. Honey bun.

EVE: I don't think....

JACK: Just a moment.

HE TAKES EVE ASIDE.

JACK: You've got to think. Remember we are deliriously happy, totally in love. We want to get married so we rush right off and do it. Then we get the big question. Where are the pictures, Julie asks. Pictures for the children and the grandchildren.

EVE: Right.

JACK: Scary thought I know but if we say oops we forgot, she's going to know we set this whole thing up just to get our hands on the money.

EVE NODS AND TURNS BACK TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER.

EVE: Okay, if we can get this done as fast as we can, I'd.... I'd really appreciate it, okay. Honey?

JACK: Oh yes dear, sweet.

EVE: Honey dear.... Jack.

JACK: Yes, here we go.

THEY POSE FOR THE PICTURE BUT THEN JACK REMEMBERS SOMETHING.

JACK: Oh wait, wait. Oh wait, wait.

HE RUSHES OVER AND GETS ANOTHER BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE TO HOLD IN THE PICTURES.

JACK: Tell me, you're an objective observer. Do we look like a happy couple?

THEY TAKE EACH OTHER'S ARMS AND PUT ON FAKE SMILES FOR THE CAMERA.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Sure.

JACK: Great. CHEESE!

THEY THEN GO THROUGH A SERIES OF STILL POSES JUST FOR THE CAMERA WITH JACK GIVING DIRECTIONS.

JACK: Ah.... here.

EVE: Here can you hold this please?

JACK: Ah.... oh.... say Julie.

oldEp246G
EVE: Julie.

JACK: Money.

oldEp246H
EVE: Money.

JACK: Here's to.... pooowwwweeeeerrrr!

JACK STRAINS TO LIFT EVE INTO HIS ARMS.

EVE: Power.

SCENE SEVEN: BACK AT THE MOTEL.

FRANKIE: I'm glad that you told me Jen but now don't you think it's time to tell Jack?

JENNIFER: I have tried so many times. You know that I have tried Frankie. Something.... something keeps stopping me. There's something inside that is stopping me.

FRANKIE: You didn't think you could tell me either but you did.

JENNIFER: I cannot tell him what happened. He would never be able to even touch me again.

FRANKIE: You don't know that.

JENNIFER: Yes I do know that. I know Jack. He would blame himself for not being for me, for not stopping it.

FRANKIE: You don't know how he's going to react that way.

JENNIFER: Yes I do. He is still suffering so much from the pain he caused Kayla. He would never be able to look at me the same way Frankie.

FRANKIE: Oh Jen, he loves you.

JENNIFER: I know that. I know that.... when he used to look at me that he.... loved me, alright. If I told him this it would hurt him so much. I couldn't do it. I couldn't stand to do that to him. He can't know.

FRANKIE: Then you're going to lose him.

JENNIFER: I'll lose him either way. It's happening already.

FRANKIE: What?

JENNIFER: We have been growing further and further apart. We've said a lot of horrible things to each other, a lot of hurtful things, Frankie.

FRANKIE: What do you mean hurtful?

JENNIFER: Jack has the impression that I slept with Lawrence because I wanted to.

FRANKIE: Oh come on Jen. He doesn't mean that. He's just trying to figure out what the hell happened. He's confused, don't you see that? (Beat) Jen, come on. Look it's like I said to you before. I'm your friend for always and I want you to be happy but personally I don't think you're ever going to be happy unless you work things out with Jack.

JENNIFER: I know that. You're right.

FRANKIE: Alright, then go to him. Go to him, will you? Tell him, tell him the truth.

JENNIFER SHAKES HER HEAD.

FRANKIE: Or...take the chance that you're going to lose him.

SCENE EIGHT: BACK AT THE PENTHOUSE, JACK IS NOW VERY DRUNK. HE IS ON THE FLOOR TRYING TO OPEN ANOTHER BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE.

JACK: Ah.... up periscope.

THE DOORBELL RINGS.

JACK: Ah.... COMING! I'm coming. I'm coming.

HE GOES TO THE DOOR AND EVE COMES OUT.

EVE: (To herself) Something old, the dress, something new, the ring, something blue.... me, something borrowed.... oh something borrowed.

SHE WALKS OVER TO JACK AND TAKES HIS HANDKERCHIEF FROM HIS POCKET. HE IS STANDING NEXT TO A MIDDLE AGED COUPLE.

EVE: Hi. Who are you?

JACK: Oh these are the Swinbournes. Mr. and Mrs. Justices and the Peace.

EVE: Hi, hi. I can't tell you how happy I am.

JACK: Well then.... don't.

JACK PUTS HIS ARM AROUND EVE AND TAKES A SWIG STRAIGHT OUT OF THE CHAMPAGNE BOTTLE.
oldEp246J

WOMAN:
The very picture of a blissful bride. The best of luck to you love. Look why don't you and I start talking about the music?

EVE: Sure.

JACK: Something with a beat. Hahahahah.

JP: I hope you've thought long and hard about marriage.

JACK: I've been thinking long and hard for quite some time.

JP: Well then I'm glad to hear that because you're going to be waking up next to this woman for forty or fifty years. You better be ready for that.

JACK IS ALMOST SICK AT THE THOUGHT.

JACK: Well that's my penance.... my.... my.... pleasure. That's my pleasure.

JP: Well, you couldn't have picked a lovelier bride.

JACK: Neither could Frankenstein.

JP: Huh?

JACK: I said, frankly I'm a lucky man.... mine.... lucky man. Heheheheh.

JP: The girl of your dreams huh?

JACK: Yeah, the girl of my dreams.

JACK LAUGHS. AT THE SAME TIME THE WOMAN IS TELLING EVE THAT JACK IS THE MAN OF HER DREAMS AND EVE IS AS TURNED OFF AS JACK. EVE DECIDES THEY BETTER DISCUSS THIS ONE MORE TIME.

EVE: Jack, darling, could you come here for a minute?

JACK: Oh yes, excuse us please, please.

EVE: Jack?

JACK: What's up, what's up.

EVE: I was just wondering. Are you sure we should go through with this? I mean I know this was my idea but....

JACK: And a wonderful idea it was.... is. Just stupendous.

EVE: You think so?

JACK: Oh absolutely. Very soon you're going to be lighting cigars with dollar bills and giving pause to all those who laughed before like.... ah.... ah.... like Francoise. I mean he never appreciated you, did he?

EVE: No.... no.

JACK: So.... revenge is sweet.

EVE: I know but forever just seems so final Jack.

JACK: No, no, no. Only death is final. Everything else is just cursory up to that point. Let's get back to the party.

EVE: Are you sure? Are you sure this is right Jack, really, are you sure?

JACK: It's the rightest of rights. Absolutely. Now just say after me, money and power, right. You told me, money and power.

EVE: Money and power.

JACK: Money and....

JP: Well kids what do you say?

SCENE NINE: AT THE MID TOWN MOTEL.

FRANKIE: Jen, I'd hate to see you lose Jack over this. It's just not worth it.

JENNIFER: I can't do it. Frankie, you just don't understand, I love him too much. I can't hurt him like this.

FRANKIE: That's exactly why you have to do this. Do you really think Jack wants to lose you Jen?

JENNIFER: I don't know. I don't know what's right. I don't know what I'm supposed to do.

FRANKIE: Well I do. Trust me okay. Look I know that you two can work things out if you get this secret out in the open. Because Jen, that's what's destroying this relationship. Not the rape.

JENNIFER: Alright and what if I tell him....

FRANKIE: Jack loves you Jen. He's not going to stop loving you because of something like this happening to you. Come on. You know that.

JENNIFER: Alright, alright. Wish me luck.

FRANKIE: Always.

JENNIFER: Alright. So how do I thank you?

FRANKIE: Go on, get out of here.

JENNIFER: Okay.

JENNIFER LEAVES TO TELL JACK ABOUT THE RAPE.

SCENE TEN: BACK AT THE PENTHOUSE.

JP: Well are you ready to tie the knot?

JACK: Ah yeah, just a second here. We're a quart low. We're running on empty.

JACK IS LOOKING FOR MORE CHAMPAGNE.

JP: Come on over here.

JACK: Ah.... here. Here I am, here I am. I'm all yours or I'm all hers.

JP: Okay.

EVE: Oh I forgot my flowers. They're in the refrigerator. I'll be right back.

JACK: Okay.

EVE RUNS OFF TO GET THE FLOWERS.

JACK: Well I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a.... frontal lobotomy.

JP: Yeah.

EVE: Alright.

JP: Ready.

JACK AND EVE STAND TOGETHER READY TO TAKE THEIR VOWS. JACK IS HOLDING A BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE AND EVE IS HOLDING THE FLOWERS. THE JP'S WIFE STARTS A TAPE OF ORGAN MUSIC.

JP: We're gathered here for a joyous occasion. The joining together in marriage of two people in love, Eve and Jack. I know that you present yourselves here today before god and this company, without any reservation, certain of the love that you have for each other. This marriage will enrich your lives immeasurably. Where there were two, there will be one. One heart, one mind.... JACK: Ah.... could you.... you know.

JACK IS STARTING TO FEEL SICK ABOUT THE WHOLE THING AND SIGNALS THE GUY TO MOVE IT ALONG AND SKIP ALL THE ROMANCE STUFF.
oldEp246K
EVE: Hurry, hurry please. JP: Oh yes, of course. (Beat) Do you Jack, take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, forsaking all others as long as you both shall live?

JACK LOOKS AT EVE LIKE HE KNOWS THIS WILL END IN DISASTER. IT IS ALSO OBVIOUS THAT HE CANNOT HELP BUT WISH THAT IT WAS JENNIFER HE WAS MARRYING.
oldEp246L

SCENE ELEVEN: IT IS LATER THAT EVENING AND THE RADIO IS PLAYING IN THE PENTHOUSE. THERE ARE FLOWERS ON THE FLOOR AND CONFETTI AND RIBBONS ALONG WITH EMPTY CHAMPAGNE BOTTLES. THE SONG PLAYING IS NAT KING COLE SINGING SMILE.
Smile though your heart is aching....
JENNIFER WALKS IN THE OPEN PENTHOUSE DOOR.

JENNIFER: JACK?
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by.

JENNIFER SEES THE REMAINS OF A PARTY.

JENNIFER: Jack?

Smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow....

JENNIFER PICKS UP EVE'S FLOWERS AND AN EMPTY BOTTLE.

You'll see the sun come shining through For you.
Light up your face with gladness
Hide very trace of sadness...

THE SCENE SWITCHES TO THE BEDROOM WHERE JACK IS ASLEEP WITH A BOTTLE UNDER HIS ARM.
oldEp246M
IT SLIPS TO THE FLOOR AND EVE STIRS NEXT TO HIM.
Although a tear maybe ever so near.

JENNIFER: Jack? Jack I wanted to talk....

JENNIFER OPENS THE DOOR AND COMES IN TO SEE THEM IN BED TOGETHER.
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile what's the use of crying....
JENNIFER FREEZES.
