(Air
date Monday, February 9th, 2004)
Scene
One: Rae is with John and Bo discussing the case. Natalie drops
by and John is short tempered with her, worried about her safety
after his last chat with the killer. She leaves upset. After
she has gone Rae berates him. He tells her that he feels guilty
enough about Cristian's death. It would be too much for him
if because of being friendly with Natalie she is also killed.
Scene Two: Haver is in his office, deep in thought, tinkering
on the piano, playing Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet
when Jessica arrives at his office. She stops at his door a
listens, unnoticed.
JESSICA:
How does it feel?
Startled
he stops playing, and looks up saying nothing.
JESSICA:
(Apologizing) Sorry (giggles).
STEPHEN: Just thinking.
JESSICA: Yeah, I could see. (Walking towards
him). But how does it feel to try to get inside the mind of
a killer?
Still looking down towards the piano, still pensive,
she looks at him.
JESSICA:
That's what you are trying to do, right? Getting inside the
killer's head?
STEPHEN: The killer picked the Tchaikovsky
music because it meant something to Troy MacIver. (He appears
to be thinking out his theory out-loud, using Jessica) This
one perfect little detail sent the police tumbling after MacIver,
but what if there is something else to the music. As far as
Troy goes, why him? Why Troy
JESSICA: (Shakes her head) I hope you're
not asking me (little laugh).
STEPHEN: (Makes a face) Only the killer can
answer this question for sure (a walks off).
JESSICA: At least you know which questions
to ask.
STEPHEN: (In agreement) Hmmm (Looking out
his office door) So (then back at her), tell me, what brings
you here at this hour?
JESSICA: Oh, (holds up her laptop) the research
that you asked me to do, I couldn't wait to show you what
I found.

Haver flashes
a very odd, almost sinister look. Or is it. It is hard to
decipher.
Scene Three: Awhile later, Jessica and Haver are sitting on
his couch, discussing what she has done. They both seem to
be having a good time. Could Haver have a bit of a crush on
her. He is also charming here.
STEPHEN:
I knew I was right, when I was thinking you'd be an excellent
research assistant (smiles).
JESSICA: Well, thanks the works fascinating,
I just, you know, I sit in the library and hours go by and
I don't even notice (laughs).
There
is a knock on the door, it is Nora Buchanan.
NORA:
Hi! (Stepping into the office) I'm sorry am I interrupting?
STEPHEN: (Jessica shuts her lap top, Haver
seems pleased to see Nora) Oh, no, no, not at all we were
just finishing up, with.... please.
Jessica
shuts her lap top. Haver seems pleased to see Nora. They get
up.
NORA:
Oh good. Hi Jess, how are you?
JESSICA: (Getting her things and begins to
leave ) Hey, Nora, very well.
NORA: Dr. Haver, I.... I'm working
on a case, um, for next spring, uh, a child abuse case. I
was wondering if i could pick your brain for a few minutes.
STEHEN: (Motioning) Please, I would love
to help.
NORA: Oh, Great!
JESSICA: (Pointing to Haver) Well, you should
get Dr. Haver to be a witness for you, he is the
(putting her finger and thumb together, for the "OK"
sign) expert in forensic psychology.
Haver
looks at her amused. She looks at him. And he laughs at her
praise.
NORA:
Oh!
JESSICA: Well, see you guys later (and leaves).
STEPHEN: (Calling to her, still amused by
all her praise) Goodbye Jessica.
JESSICA: Bye.
NORA: (After Jess has gone) Maybe you should
have her write the jacket cover for your next book.
STEPHEN: (Smiling) That would be a good idea.
NORA: Yeah, I think so. I'm sorry to put
you on the spot. I mean I know the LPD and the FBI have been
really pretty demanding of your time.
STEPHEN:
(Brushing it off as no problem) Ooohh, no, no, not at all.
I'll forgive you as long as (putting on the charm) we can
talk about it over a drink.
NORA: Oh, well (throws up her hand) in that
case, okay.
STEPHEN: (Smiling and laughing charmingly)
Okay! (Nora laughs too) Good, alright. (Goes over to his chair
and gets his jacket). Now I understand y.... you were pretty
upset (walking back towards her) when you were seeing Troy
MacIver the other day, I was just wondering, (putting on his
jacket) how do you feel now that he has been exonerated?
NORA: (Thrown by the question) I don't ever
want to see someone punished for something they didn't do,
especially not Troy. The unfortunate thing is since he is....
not the killer, I guess that means the killer is still out
there somewhere.
Scene
Four: Back in Bo's office, he, Rae, and John are discussing
the murder case in Chicago, the Love Child Murders, which Haver
wrote about. For John there seems to be a similarity between
the two cases. Rae admits that there are similarities, those
killings are also strangulations, but she points out that the
Love Child Killer uses his hands, while the Music Box Killer
uses a pair of red leotards. She states that all her knowledge
about serial killers makes it a very significant difference.
John wonders about the doctor who was accused of the killings.
What if he, like Troy, he was framed. Bo and John seem convinced
that both serial killings were done by the same person.
Scene Five: Haver and Rae arrive at Rodi's. They walk towards
a table.
NORA:
You don't mind if I grab a burger, do you?
STEPHEN: You haven't eaten yet?
NORA: Oh no, this schedule going on.... thank
you (he helps her with her chair)....
STEPHEN: Certainly (He goes to his chair
and puts down his case and sits).
NORA: .... Al I have to do (motioning) I
mean I jus.... either eat at work, or I starve, hahaha, (Pointing
to herself) we can all see that I'm not
starving.
STEPHEN: (Haver laughs too) So I guess you're
ready for your trial tomorrow?
NORA: (Wiping the table) Well, as ready as
I'm going to be. I just wish he was a sell out, (brush her
hands together) and would take a plea bargain, but he isn't.
STEPHEN: Hmmm.
Just
then Evangeline Williamson, Todd's attorney, walks up to the
table. Nora looks up.
Haver
looks up.
EVANGELINE:
(Gives a little wave) Hi. Your baby sitter told me you'd be
here.
NORA: Yes, Evangeline Williamson, defense
(Haver looks over at Nora) attorney, (motioning to Haver)
this is Dr. Stephen Haver, (pointing at him) forensic psychiatrist.
Looks
over at her, he seems impressed. He offers her his hand.
STEPHEN:
How do you do? Nice to meet you.
EVANGELINE: (To Haver, but not really paying
attention) Same to you. (Talking to Nora) I.... Look, I'm
sorry to interrupt you guys (walking next to Nora, Haver continues
to look at her) I just, um, I need to talk to you right away.
NORA: Oh! Okay. (To Haver) Excuse me.
STEPHEN: I'll be right here.
Scene
Six: Evangeline tells Nora that Todd has decided to accept a
plea bargain Nora is surprised that he actually seems to care
what is best for his family.
Scene Seven: At Rodi's Nora is talking to Evangeline about Todd's
plea-bargaining. Evangeline wants to discuss it now to get everything
ironed out. Nora returns to tell Haver that they will have to
postpone their discussion. As she walks up to his table she
does a little victory dance. Haver is sipping a beer, and looks
at her surprised. She sits down.
NORA:
After what we were talking about, you are not going to believe
this.
STEPHEN:
(Looking over towards Evangeline) That's Todd Manning's attorney,
right?
NORA: Yes, (smugly) and he's going to take
the plea-bargain. I am sooo relieved (she
clinks his glass with hers).
STEPHEN: You were worried?
NORA: I just didn't like idea what this trial
was going to do Blair Cramer and to her children. I can't
believe this (frowning at the thought) guy put actually someone
else first.
STEPHEN: Well, congratulations (he clinks
her glass in a toast).
NORA: Thank you (takes a drink)!
Meanwhile
John has come to the bar for some burgers. He tries to apologize
to Natalie for his behavior earlier. She says it is okay. Though
she obviously still is a little hurt. He tries to explain why
he acted the way he did. He is walking off, as Nora and Haver
are toasting her success. Nora sees him, and calls out to him.
NORA:
Haaa! What are you doing, eating on the run.
He
stops short and goes over to talk to them.
JOHN:
(Showing his take out bag) What can I say, I love grease.
NORA: (Snorting at his comment as she drink)
Hmmmm!
JOHN: (Touching his lips as if remembering
something, then pointing to Haver) Actually, I'm glad I ran
into you. Ummm, I was wondering, would you mind taking look
at another case, having a little review of it, similar to
the one we're working on right now?
STEPHEN: (Looking over at John) Well, do
I know anything about it?
JOHN: I think so. A few years ago; Chicago;
the Love Child Murders.
STEPHEN: Well, certainly, I.... I.... I've
written on that, and I have some notes.
JOHN: Oh, that be great. Ummm, maybe we could
do something about it tomorrow?
STEPHEN: Tomorrow morning.... I'll give you
a call.
JOHN: (Pointing) That's perfect, thank-you.
He
walks off.
NORA:
Good-night!
Stops,
taps his forehead having remembered something. As he tells
Haver this Haver watches him, his expression is hard to read.
JOHN:
Oh, one more thing, I forgot. If I ran into you I was suppose
to tell you from Rae (pointing) to give her a call. She had
to rush out and go have and interview MacIver again. So (nodding)--
HAVER: (Confused, frowns) Why!?!
NORA: John, (pointing to Haver) he and I
went out there (frowning, confused too) w....w.... we met
with him, he was in a bad way. I mean, he
was useless and incoherent.
JOHN: I know, I know (touching his hair)
but, you know, I still think there is something there, and
I think (puckers his lips, and slaps his leg with his hand
) that Rae's the best shot we've got.
Scene Eight: Rae arrives at the prison. Troy is escorted by
a guard to the room. He seems much better now, more lucid. She
tells him that she wants to question him. He accuses her of
wanting something just like everyone else. Rae tries to assure
him that she does want to help him, she wants to find out who
stole his life and used it to frame him. She asks if there were
any doctors, nurses, or fellow prisoners who did not like him.
He tells her that doctors are *suppose* to care about people.
Troy finally says that there was a doctor who said he cared
about him, that he cared about his life, and how he ended up
in prison. Troy tells her that that doctor remembered everything
he told him. He tells her that the doctor helped him see clearly
about things. He tells her that the doctor was very smart. He
goes on to tell her that all the nurses there loved the doctor
too, especially Mavis. She remembers that that was the name
of the nurse who was murdered. Troy says he did not killer her.
Rae tells him she knows he did not. She asks Troy about the
doctor; and he tells her that she knows him, which surprises
her. He says that the doctor's name is Stephen Haver. He tells
her that he came to visit him with Nora. He asks Rae why was
Haver with Nora. She tells Troy that Stephen is working on the
serial murder case. He wonders if Nora is working with Haver,
he tells her that Haver and Nora looked very friendly. She says
that everyone is consulting together. Troy becomes more agitated,
wanting to know if Haver and Nora are close. She tells him that
they just know each other. He continues to question Rae about
how close Nora and Stephen are. He becomes more agitated, and
starts to rant. The guard comes in and tells him to be quiet.
However, he becomes more upset, and starts ranting, telling
Rae to tell Nora to stay away from Haver, he keeps repeating
that. The guard has to drag him away. Rae is alone, confused
and disturbed over what Troy has just said, and the possible
implications, that Haver is the killer.
Scene Nine: Back at Rodi's Nora and Stephen are at their table,
sipping their beers.
NORA:
I have so many questions to ask you about
this child abuse case, but (indicating over towards Evangeline)
I really do have to work with Evangeline
on this, uh, plea agreement.
STEPHEN: Alright, we'll get together at another
time, if you'd like.
NORA: (Holding onto her purse) I'd like it,
very, very much (opening her purse).
STEPHEN: (Watching her) All right.
NORA: And in the meantime, here we go (getting
money out to pay)--
Their
dialogue interlaps each other.
STEPHEN:
Oh, no, no, no, no (stopping her) this is on me (handing it
back to her)--
NORA: No, no, no, no I insist
(putting it back) I insist--
STEPHEN: No, I insist (handing
it back to her) this time on me, (charmingly, smiles) next
time on you.
NORA: (Each still holding on to the money
and smiling at each other) You got a deal.
STEPHEN: (Letting go) Good!
NORA: Thank-you very much (getting up to
leave).
STEPHEN: (Nodding and smiling) Next
time!
She
gets up to leave, and he flashes a smile.
NORA:
Next time (walking over towards Evangeline's table).
Evangeline
apologizes for interrupting Nora's date. She denies it is a
date. Nora tells her that Haver just is a very smart man, and
they are working on a case together. Evangeline looks over towards
Haver and smiles, she looks impressed by him. She asks Nora
then if good looks do not impress her.

Nora
peeks over to Haver, who is thinking intently. Nora says, "is
he good looking, I never really noticed," and laughs. Though
it appears she does think he is good looking, and apparently
she enjoys his company.
Meanwhile, Haver is deep in thought, pressing his finger to
his top lip.
Scene Ten: Back at Bo Buchanan's office, Bo and John are eating,
when Rae returns. She is upset because of her conversation with
Troy. They ask her if she had any luck, but she tells them she
is not sure. John then tells them he will catch them up on what
Antonio told him what he discovered in Chicago. John tells them
about the doctor in Chicago, who was believed to be behind the
Love Child Murders. Apparently he was in the hospital mental
ward when he died. Rae notes that it was just like Troy. It
appears to have been a suicide. However, the police discovered
that he had been out on passes. John tells them that Antonio
is checking the doctor's notes for more information to see if
there are any clues indicating whether during his time out the
doctor planned on killing other women. However, John is sure
that he was set up, just like Troy. Antonio is going to interview
psychiatrists who had contact with and who treated the doctor
believed to be the killer. However, one doctor, a Dr. Samuel
Hartford died shortly after the alleged killer died. Again they
ask her about Troy. She hesitates to tell them what she learned.
She tells them at first Troy was lucid. She again hesitates.
She tells them that she does not want to say too much until
she has more information, she does not want to ruin someone's
reputation, the person may be innocent. She leaves and says
that she wants to sleep on it. She will talk with them in the
morning.
Scene Eleven: A police officer comes in with a video tape that
was left at the front desk for John. They put it into the VCR
and watch. It is from a press conference, in New Jersey, from
several years ago. In the video we hear John tell the press
that the killer is someone of below average intelligence, and
that the killer is ordinary, and is a psychopath; and that he
is a coward, who hates feeling frighten all the time. John tells
Bo that he did that to lure the killer out, hoping to make him
angry enough to get him to mess up. Bo notes that because of
the press conference years ago the killer has become obsessed
with John. Hopefully because of that the killer will start screwing
up. In the video, John tells the press that the killer has begun
to make mistakes.
Scene Twelve: Rae goes to Stephen's office. She knocks on the
door. There is no answer, and since the door is unlocked she
walks in. She looks around, but Haver is not there. She goes
to his desk and finding a pad and pen leaves a message about
seeing Troy. She notices Haver's manuscript from the other day,
and looks through it, but first looks to make sure Haver is
not coming. Reading the first page she looks concerned, and
puts it back on his desk. She looks at his top drawer, and finds
nothing. She goes through his right top drawer, and finds nothing.
Then she rifles through his bottom right drawer, and finds something.
She opens it, and it reveals a diploma, "Great Lakes Institute,
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE; SAMUEL HARTFORD; DOCTOR OF MEDICINE."
RAE:
(Reading it) "Samuel Hartford," his license and....
diploma.... (frowning, confused) What is he doing with this?

She takes it and quickly gathers up her stuff to leave, rushing
off she stops dead in her tracks. Haver is at the door watching
her. He tilts his head. She looks terrified but it appears she
is trying to hide it.

Stephen looks rather malicious, but tries to look normal.
