SCENE ONE: JACK AND JENNIFER ARE STILL UNDER THE BED. SHE IS LYING ON TOP OF HIM AND THEY ARE KISSING. AS THEY KISS THEY ROLL SIDEWAYS AND JENNIFER IS BESIDE HIM BUT VERY SQUASHED. THEY ARE BOTH ENJOYING THE KISS WHEN JACK SUDDENLY PULLS AWAY AND FROWNS AT HER.JENNIFER: What? Why are you staring at me like that?
JACK: You.... you kissed me?
JENNIFER: You kissed me!
JACK: You.... you ripped the mustache off my face and kissed me and.... I mean you didn't freeze up or back off.
JENNIFER SMILES.JENNIFER: You're right, you're right. I didn't.
JACK: Ah.... this is.... rather unusual, huh.
JENNIFER: You know.... ah.... all the other times before when I did pull back? (Beat) I just want you to know something Jack, that.... it wasn't because of you.
JACK: Well.... it must have been.... something because people don't go from one extreme to another if something hasn't changed. Am I right?
JENNIFER: Yes.
JACK: So? (Beat) Tell me what's changed? What's happened?
JENNIFER: Alright, ah, you see the thing is....
JACK: Please, please go on. It's fascinating. You're being terribly concise and clear. It's only getting better. It's only....
JENNIFER: Alright. Here it is. Well the thing that happened Jack is....
SUDDENLY THE DOOR OF THE COMPARTMENT OPENS AND TWO PEOPLE COME IN ARGUING.
SCENE TWO: JACK AND JENNIFER, ARE HIDING UNDER THE BED, A COUPLE HAS COME INTO THE CABIN ARGUING, MAKING JACK AND JENNIFER FEEL AWKWARD HEARING THE DISCUSSION AND STAY HIDDEN.
WOMAN: This is just the excitement of the trip, that's all.
MAN: This trip was supposed to be the answer to our problems. I mean that's why we came here in the first place. Why don't we just take advantage of it, huh.
UNDER THE BED JENNIFER DOES NOT LIKE THIS AT ALL.JENNIFER: (Whisper) Jack!
THE COUPLE BEGIN TO KISS THEN LIE DOWN ON THE BED ABOVE JACK AND JENNIFER.JENNIFER: We have to go now.
JACK: We can't, we can't go now.
JENNIFER: What do you mean we can't. We have to go now.
THE COUPLE START MOANING.WOMAN: Show me.
MAN: Let me show you, all night long.
JACK MOUTHS THE WORDS ALL NIGHT LONG AND FROWNS. JENNIFER CANOTT STAND TO HEAR THEM AND BLOCKS HER EARS. MEANWHILE JACK GETS OUT HIS NOTE BOOK.JENNIFER: What are you doing?
JACK: Taking notes. How do you spell.... èaaaahhh?î
JENNIFER HITS JACK.JACK: Jack!
WOMAN: Oh David stop please.
MAN: What's wrong?
WOMAN: I can't do this. I can't make love to you. It's not right.
JACK IS FASCINATED BY THE CONVERSATION AND JENNIFER WANTS TO CRAWL IN A HOLE SOMEWHERE.MAN: What are you talking about? We're married.
WOMAN: I had an affair.
JACK RAISES HIS EYEBROWS.MAN: When?
WOMAN: Last summer. You were gone for a long time and I was lonely. I did a terrible thing and I have to live with it. I'm the one that has to live with the guilt.
MAN: Haven't you been doing that for quite sometime?
WOMAN: I'm sorry. I know I've treated you badly being so aloof and so unapproachable but I had to put some kind distance between us.
MAN: Why?
WOMAN: I was afraid. I thought if I let you get close and look at me, I mean really look at me, then you'd know.
BOTH AND JACK AND JENNIFER ARE AFFECTED BY THE DISCUSSION AND ARE THINKING OVER THEIR OWN SITUATION.
JENNIFER HAS TEARS IN HER EYES.WOMAN: I'm sorry David. I know I've hurt you badly. I don't even know why I did it you know, not really. But if you can forgive me and give me some time to work things out, I think we can start again. And I want that, I want to be able to give myself to you no holds barred. What do you think?
MAN: Do you still love me?
WOMAN: I meant it when I said it before. Yes, yes, I love you more than anything.
MAN: Come on, let's go back to the party.
WOMAN: Oh David.
THE COUPLE KISS AND LEAVE. JACK AND JENNIFER STRUGGLE TO STAND UP.JACK: Oh, oh. Well I hope those sniffles weren't for David, the chump.
JENNIFER: What are you talking about? I thought that he was very nice.
JACK: Oh yeah, chump. That's what chumps are. They're nice. And he's the king of the chumps, let me tell you. And I'll tell you another thing, little Joanie knew that too.
JENNIFER: How can you say that when she was so honest with him? I mean, didn't you believe her?
JACK: Wait a minute, wait a minute, that is not the point of all. I mean, you know, everyone is human of course, and we all make mistakes but she lied to him for months on end. I mean how can you trust somebody who keeps secrets like that?
JENNIFER IS WORRIED WHEN SHE HEARS THIS.JENNIFER: Well maybe she was scared?
JACK: Well if she was scared.... listen, she supposedly knew that he loved her and would forgive her. I don't buy that at all. I mean.... it doesn't make at any sense at all to.... to.... to.... to.... to lie to someone that you supposedly love, that's all.
JENNIFER IS ABOUT TO CRY.JENNIFER: Right, well I think if the gun was here we would have found it by now, alright. Let's check the next compartment Jack.
JACK: Wait a minute, wait a minute, this place is a mess. We've got.... just a minute here. Let me tell you another thing, you were about to.... ah.... unload something on me just when Romeo and Juliet popped in. Why don't you tell me what it was?
JACK CAN SEE THAT JENNIFER IS UPSET SO HE DROPS THE SUBJECT.JACK: Please, right this way. Let's just tidy up a bit, huh.
JENNIFER: Jack, I really said everything that I need to say, okay.
JACK: Huh, uh. Well I'll tell you something, I must have been dozing because I missed this conversation.
JENNIFER: No you didn't. We were talking about us being together and getting close and I was saying that it wasn't your fault that I was holding back, that it's mine. That I just have some things that I have to work out.
JACK: What, like our.... like our friend Joanie?
JENNIFER: Yeah, in a way. You know and she's lucky to have David. Sometimes it's nice to have someone standing by you when you have to work out some problems.
JACK: Wait a second, I think.... I think we better go over this conversation again with subtitles because I don't know what you're talking about. From my understanding, the problem that you're working through has something to do with what I did to Kayla.
JENNIFER: That's right.
JACK: (Hurt) That's right. Well I.... I'm surprised you actually are admitting it.JENNIFER: Yes I am admitting it and I'm also coming to terms with it. But besides that, that's only part of the problem.
JACK: That's only part of the problem? You mean you want another problem. You need more problems than that? That isn't enough?
JENNIFER: Jack, I'm serious.
JACK: I am serious too. (Beat) I tell you quite honestly I never thought that you would be able to face up to this. But.... ah.... you have my apologies. Obviously living alone has been very good for you. It's help you face up to life's truths as painful as they might be.
JENNIFER: Well I've learned to face a lot of things, alone if I have to. But I don't want to be alone for the rest of my life.
JACK: I don't think you have to worry about that. There's plenty of chumps in the world like David.
JENNIFER: I said I don't want to be alone. So I am going to work.... on the other part of that problem.
JACK: And what is that other part?
JENNIFER: I'll let you know when I straighten it out.
SHE WALKS STRAIGHT TO THE DOOR.JACK: Wait a minute, wait, wait, wait. (Beat) Well I.... I certainly hope you do.... straighten it out.
JENNIFER: Yeah I hope I do too Jack. I really do.
SHE WALKS OUT AND JACK IS LEFT WONDERING WHAT ON EARTH SHE ISTALKING ABOUT.
SCENE THREE: BACK IN THE LOUNGE CAR, THE ORGANIZER IS RUNNING A GAME OF SHOOT-OUT. SHE CALLS OUT THE NAMES OF THE TWO MEN WHO ARE GOING TO PLAY AND IT'S FRANKIE AND JACK. FRANKIE AND EVE ARE AT THE PARTY BUT JACK IS MISSING AND BRIAN WANTS TO KNOW WHERE HE IS. FRANKIE TELLS EVE TO GO FIND JACK WHILE HE DISTRACTS EVERYBODY. LUCKILY JACK ARRIVES JUST AS THEY ARE ABOUT TO SEARCH FOR HIM THEMSELVES.
FRANKIE: Hey, Jack!
JACK: Francoise, miss me.
ORGANIZER: We certainly did. Here, take this gun.
JACK: What?
JACK IS RELUCTANT TO EVEN TOUCH IT BUT SHE PUSHES IT INTO HIS HAND.FRANKIE: Congratulations Jack, you've been selected to challenge me in a gunfight.
JACK: Wait a minute, a gunfight. Can't we just have a nice little game of cards or something.
ORGANIZER: Don't worry. Know stand back to back.
JACK: I won't be late next time.
FRANKIE: Do it, do it.ORGANIZER: Take three paces, turn and fire.
JACK: Wait a minute, we could get hurt, wait a minute.
ORGANIZER: Ready? ONE....
JACK: Wait a minute, this is dangerous. Wait a minute, we could get hurt doing this. This is....
ORGANIZER: TWO....
JENNIFER WALKS IN AND SEES JACK WITH THE GUN.JENNIFER: What are you doing?
JACK: I don't know. They said something about.... I don't know.
ORGANIZER: THREE!
SUDDENLY THE TRAIN LURCHES AND THERE IS A GUN SHOT AND EVERYBODY FALLS TO THE FLOOR.
SCENE ONE: JENNIFER APPEARS TO BE UNCONSCIOUS ON THE FLOOR OF THE TRAIN AND FRANKIE IS SHIELDING EVE WHO IS CRYING. JENNIFER WAKES UP AND CRAWLS OVER TO SEE HOW JACK IS.JENNIFER: Jack, Jack, listen are you okay? Are you alright?
JACK: I've fallen and I can't get up. But I'll be alright, I just want the number of that bus.
THE ORGANIZER TELLS EVERYBODY THAT SHE WILL TRY TO FIND OUT WHAT IS WRONG.
SCENE TWO: BRIAN GOES TO HELP HER AND WHILE THEY TALKING A MAN WALKS INTO THE CAR CARRYING A GUN. IT IS THE GUY THAT JOHNNIE CORELLI HAS HIRED. TANNER IS BEHIND HIM AND HE SCREAMS AT BRIAN TO TAKE COVER. BRIAN JUMPS THE GUY AND IT GOES OFF AMIDST A LOT OF SCREAMING. FRANKIE CRAWLS OVER TO SEE EVE AND FINDS HER BLEEDING. THE MAN STRUGGLES AGAIN WITH BRIAN AND THEN RUNS OUT WITH BRIAN FOLLOWING HIM. TANNER TAKES OFF TO PROTECT BRIAN.
SCENE THREE: BACK IN THE LOUNGE CAR JACK AND JENNIFER ARE HIDING UNDER A TABLE.JACK: Are you alright, are you alright?
JENNIFER: Yeah, I'm fine. I'm fine.
JACK: Okay.
JENNIFER GOES OVER TO HELP FRANKIE WITH EVE.JENNIFER: Jack, get a doctor.
JACK: There's a doctor right there.
A MAN COMES OVER AND LOOKS AT HER SHOULDER AND SAYS THAT IT IS ONLY A FLESH WOUND BUT IT WILL NEED A DRESSING. JENNIFER VOLUNTEERS TO GET HIS BAG.JACK: Wait a minute..
JENNIFER: I'll be right back.
JACK: Why do you have to volunteer for everything? You'll get killed.
SCENE FOUR: HE FOLLOWS HER OUT TO THE DOCTOR'S COMPARTMENT.JACK: Okay.
JENNIFER: Alright, I'll look here.
JACK: Right, now where do you think.... careful.... where do you think a doctor would hide his bag? I mean you work.... you're from a family of doctors, right.
JENNIFER: It's not in the closet.
JACK: Well, where would he hide his.... you know this is just like Eve, you know that. I mean here we are trying to keep a low profile and she gets herself shot.
JENNIFER: Jack, I know that you're not really mad at her, right, you're just worried about her.
JACK: I hate the sight of blood, that's all.
JENNIFER: The same way you were worried about me. I saw how scared you were in the lounge Jack.
JACK: Wait a minute. There were.... I mean there were bullets and bodies flying everywhere.
JENNIFER: You were afraid for me.
JACK: I was just.... I didn't want to see you running around like a chicken with your head cut off in the line of fire.
JENNIFER: It meant a lot to me that you cared.
JACK: That's because I have a journalist's code of ethics. I hate to see another journalist get shot in the line of duty even if they did defect to the.... waste.... land of television.JENNIFER: Right, right, let's just get the bag and get out of here.
THE LIGHTS ON THE TRAIN COME BACK ON.JACK: And....
JENNIFER: Right.
ACK: Okay, good. Let's see if she's in any more pain or anymore of a pain. It's right in front of you, right there. Let's go. Right this way.
JENNIFER WALKS OUT AND JACK STOPS TO LOOK BACK AT THE ROOM.JACK: Hmmm, nice room.
SCENE FIVE: BACK IN THE LOUNGE CAR.JENNIFER: Right, here's your bag.
JACK: Yes, the bag's....
THE DOCTOR THEN EXPLAINS THAT IT IS A SUPERFICIAL WOUND AND THAT SHE WILL BE FINE.EVE: Yes, what else did you expect from me.
JACK: Well, nice to see you in such high spirits, as you've ruined the rest of our trip.
EVE: Would it have made your trip better if the bullet had gone through my heart, Jack?
JACK: Well you can't hit what you can't find.
FRANKIE: Hey, that's enough Jack.
JENNIFER: Oh he didn't mean it.
JACK: I most certainly did mean it.
DOCTOR: Hey, hey, hey, can we keep it down please. This is not helping her at all.
JACK FEELS A BIT GUILTY AND STOPS MAKING COMMENTS. BRIAN COMES BACK AND TELLS THE ORGANIZER TO CLEAR THE CAR IMMEDIATELY. SHE STARTS TELLING EVERYBODY TO LEAVE BUT WHEN JACK, JENNIFER, FRANKIE AND EVE GO TO LEAVE BRIAN STOPS THEM.FRANKIE: Okay, let's get you back to your room.
JACK: That's a good idea before anybody asks anymore questions. Doctor, thank you.
BRIAN: You talking about me Jack? Whoa, whoa, whoa, where's everybody going, you're going to miss all the fun. Tanner, Melissa, don't leave. Come here for a second.
HE THEN HAS HIS FOUR PROBLEM MAKERS STANDING TOGETHER.BRIAN: Okay here we go, now it's time for a little question and answer. You want to tell me what's going on, you want to start Jack, please?
JACK LOOKS SURPRISED AND COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF ANYTHING STRANGE GOING ON.JACK: Well.... ah.... Miss Horton.
JENNIFER: Huh?
BRIAN: Jennifer?
JENNIFER: Well, you see....
BRIAN: Ms. Deveraux, Ms. Deveraux?
VE: Ah....
BRIAN: Frankie, please, something?
FRANKIE: Huh? Oh.... ah....
BRIAN: Anybody want to start here, feel free.
THEY ALL START TALKING TOGETHER WITH JACK BEING THE LOUDEST.JACK: Well it's like we were saying before. We're here for the story and we're....
BRIAN: HOLD IT, HOLD IT, HOLD IT. YOU GUYS ARE DRIVING ME NUTS! Alright, you're not going to tell me why, I am going to tell you why. The guy that was on this train shooting this place up, well he's on the train for one reason and it's the same reason we're all here and that's to find the gun that killed Nick Corelli.
FRANKIE: Well since you seem to know so much detective....
JACK INTERRUPTS.JACK: Francoise.
FRANKIE: Jack.
JACK: Francoise!
FRANKIE: Jack!
JACK: FRANCOISE!
FRANKIE: JACK!
JACK BACKS OFF.JACK: Alright.
FRANKIE: Then you must also know that Eve didn't use that gun.
BRIAN: Can't say that she did and can't say that she didn't.
EVE: I'm not guilty.
BRIAN: That remains to be seen.
JACK: Alright, excuse me.
JACK PUTS ON HIS HAT AND STRIDES OVER TO BRIAN LIKE HE MEANS BUSINESS.JACK: If everything seems to be out in the open now, why don't you tell us, what's next?
BRIAN: Well we're going to call off the search and leave it up to the experts.
JACK: No! No, no, no, no, as a member of the free press, that's totally unacceptable. That's out of the question. Totally out of the question.
BRIAN: What are you saying Jack? Why is this?
JACK IS THINKING WHEN EVE COMES OVER AND TAPS HIM ON THE SHOULDER.EVE: Yeah, Jack. Why is this?
JACK: Ah...well, um.... well I guess I was wrong. I guess it's not out of the question. I'm sorry, I was thinking the totally wrong thing.
BRIAN: If you're thinking of taking this into your own hands Jack, forget about it because that guy who jumped the train, well there will be more like him, I guarantee you. If they're not already on the train, right now.
JENNIFER: Wait, are you trying to tell us that there is somebody else on this train right now?
BRIAN: This time we won't even know who he is. Excuse me.
BRIAN STORMS OUT AND THE OTHERS ALL LOOK AT EACH OTHER AND ARE A BIT SCARED. THEY GO
SCENE SIX: BACK IN FRANKIE'S COMPARTMENT, JACK AND JENNIFER ARE IN THEIR PAJAMAS IN FRANKIE'S COMPARTMENT AND HE IS FUSSING OVER EVE.FRANKIE: Okay, here's another pillow. Here you go.
EVE: Thanks.
FRANKIE: How about another blanket?
EVE: No, no, I'm okay.
FRANKIE: Oh come on, I'm sure you could use another blanket.
JACK HAS ENOUGH.JACK: SHE IS FINE! How many times does she have to tell you, she is fine! Alright!
FRANKIE: Relax.
JACK SITS DOWN AND JENNIFER SITS NEXT TO HIM OPPOSITE EVE AND FRANKIE.JACK: Now, let me tell you, this is what our next move is going to be.
JENNIFER: We don't have a next move because you heard what Brian said, he's on to us, Jack.
JACK: That's exactly why we need to have a next move. We've got to make sure we get to that gun. We can't let the police have it before we do.
EVE: Why not?
JACK: Listen, you were the one that said you didn't want him involved anymore. Isn't that correct? That he already had you tried and convicted, aren't they your words?
EVE: Well he obviously wants to solve this as quickly as possible and so do I.
FRANKIE: Eve's right. Look that's what this thing's all about, to find the real killer, Jack.
JACK: Well perhaps for you but for Miss Horton and I, we are trying to take it a step further to find the letter. And we have to get the gun before the police do, to do that.
FRANKIE: Look we want to get the letter and nail Alamain as bad as you do. But if Brian figures out that we are still pursuing this thing....
JACK: Who says that Brian is going to figure it out?
EVE: Jack, if you mess this up for me, I will be guilty of murder, yours!
JACK: Oh you're a fine one to talk about messing things up.
EVE: I'm sorry if your little plan is wrecked but it's my life we're talking about here.
JACK: It's obvious that it's your life that we're talking about....
FRANKIE: Look, look, just calm down. It's late, we're tired, we're in our PJs. What to you say we get some rest, okay?
JACK: Well at the risk of sounding like Shane Donovan, that does sound like a plan. The question is, where are we going to sleep, huh?
THEY ALL EXCHANGE GLANCES AND NOBODY WANTS TO SAY WHAT THEY ARE ALL THINKING.JACK: Well do we have any arrangement for this little slumber party?
EVE: Well.... ah.... I guess there's no reason for me to stay hidden here in Frankie's room, right. I'll give you your bed back Jennifer, alright.
JENNIFER: Ah, no. You know what, I don't think that's a good idea. I don't think that you should move after everything you've been through, I really don't?
FRANKIE: Hey Jen, you're right. Jack, you don't want to be lugging your stuff all over the place.JACK: But wait a minute....
FRANKIE: But Jack, come on, you know. It's just going to attract attention.
JACK: Oh, well if we're talking about attracting attention, that's the last thing we want to do with a suspected killer on board.
EVE: Right.
FRANKIE: Right.
EVE: So it's all settled then. We'll keep everything the way it is.
JENNIFER: Yes it's much safer that way. You take care of Eve and I'll take care of Jack.
JACK: What do you mean, take care of Jack?
JENNIFER: Jack I always take care of you.
JACK: That'll be the day when you take care of me.
JENNIFER: Jack I always do. I rescued you from the ocean.
JACK: I don't need anybody to take care of me. I am just....
JENNIFER: I rescued you from the ocean....
JENNIFER DRAGS HIM OUT AND BACK INTO THEIR OWN COMPARTMENT. THEY CONTINUE TO ARGUE, AND ARE OBVIOUSLY LOVING IT. EVE AND FRANKIE LAUGH, THEY ARE NOT SURE IF THEY SHOULD LEAVE JACK AND JENNIFER ALONE, THEY MIGHT HURT EACH OTHER THEY JOKE.
SCENE SEVEN: JENNIFER CLIMBS INTO THE BED AGAIN AND LIES FACING AWAY FROM JACK. HE SITS UP ON HIS SIDE AS FAR AWAY FROM HER AS HE CAN GET. THERE IS A LONG AWKWARD MOMENT BEFORE SHE SPEAKS.JENNIFER: Ah Jack, will you turn off the light?
JACK: Ah, sure, why not.
JENNIFER: Are you okay?
JACK: Yes, great, I couldn't be better.
HE CLIMBS INTO BED.JACK: I can't wait for the next wonderful thing to happen. I mean maybe the James gang is going to kidnap all of us and hijack us off this train.
JENNIFER TURNS OVER NEXT TO HIM.JENNIFER: Jack, listen to me, I know that you're upset because we're not going to find the gun first.
JACK: Who said we're not going to find that gun first?
JENNIFER: Come on Jack. You're not still going to try and get that gun before the police do. There could be another killer on this train.
JACK: Look if we do not get that gun first, we are never going to be able to establish and publish Lawrence's connection to all this and this whole trip will have been for nothing.
JENNIFER: Well that's not true. I mean we've already got something out of this trip.
JACK: Yeah?
JENNIFER: We found out that we can still work together, didn't we.
JACK: You call this working?JENNIFER: Listen to me, I'm not saying that we have to give up alright. If it's this that doesn't get Lawrence, it'll be something else. He's done so many things, alright. I'm not saying that we have to quit.
JACK: Right.... right.
JENNIFER: Right. So it's a.... so it's deal. We're still in this together?
SHE PUTS OUR HER HAND TO SHAKE HIS. HE TAKES IT.JACK: We're still together.
THEY BOTH FEEL AWKWARD WITH THE TOUCH AND SHE LETS GO AND LIES BACK DOWN AND PULLS HER HAIR UP FROM HER NECK. A LONG CURL BRUSHES JACK'S CHEEK. HE GENTLY STROKES IT BETWEEN HIS FINGERS AND JENNIFER SMILES TO HERSELF AS SHE GOES TO SLEEP WHILE JACK LIES AWAKE.
