(Air
date Thursday, February 19th, 2004)
Scene
one: It is a short time after the last scene of the previous
episode, the police station, Bo's office. Bo Buchanan and John
McBain are after setting it up for Stephen to come to the police
station, since they suspect he is their killer. They hope that
he was not playing all and suspects something.
Scene Two: The scene continues between Stephen and Jessica,
they are in the hallway outside police office. In the previous
episode she has let it slip that McBain suspects him of being
the killer. Haver plays along, continuing to be the beloved
professor to get Jessica to give him more information. Jessica
foolishly does so. She puts her hand on his shoulder and leads
him away from the door.
JESSICA:
Frankly,
I wouldn't go and see John McBain if I were
you without my lawyer.
STEPHEN: (Feigning ignorance) But, he to...
he told me (gesturing) he was pretty sure he had arrested the
killer. He just wanted me to come down and advise.
 JESSICA:
Yeah, he's lying, eh, listen, what really happened
was that he found this old blurry photograph of him at a press
conference, i.... i.... it.... it was the White Rose murders,
remember a few years ago.
Haver
looks upset.
STEPHEN:
I know the case--
JESSICA: (Angry for him) OF COURSE
you know the case you were writing about it. Anyway's, he blew
up the photographs and he thinks that heee.... he sees you in
a crowd.
STEPHEN: (Frowning, acting surprised) In a
crowd of reporters?
JESSICA: Yeah, I know, it's ridiculous. And
even if you were there you had every
right to be there! (Shaking her head in disbelief)
I-I... I told him that.
STEPHEN: Why thank you for going to bat for
me.
JESSICA: Yeeaahh, (shaking head) yeah, you
know, you were right about John he's really obsessed.
Now he's even saying that he thinks the Music Boxer Murderer
is the same man who sh.... killed his fiancée.
STEPHEN: Look, it's going to be all right,
I'll just go there an... and I'll.... and I'll (smiling) work
this whole thing out.
JESSICA: I-I'll come with you.
STEPHEN: (The last thing he wants) N.... n....
no, no, that's all right. I mean, l-l... li... like you said
before you need (gesturing towards the court room) to be with
your family in the court room. I-I.... I'll just take care of
this i-i.... it's just a case of mistaken identity.
JESSICA: Well, in, ah, happier news I finished
the footnotes for the last two chapters of the book they're
just in my car.
Haver
flashes one of his charismatic, beloved professor smiles.
STEPHEN:
You're the best! Look, could you bring that by the office later.
She
mouths "Okay." Haver turns and sees a police officer.
He turns and does not look pleased, but flashes a faint, half-hearted
smile at Jessica.
Scene Three: Time has passed and Bo and John are getting antsy,
Haver has not showed up. They are sure he must be on to them.
They say that they have officers at his house and office as
well as Rae's house and office. John knows he has Rae, but he
fears that Haver may have done something to her.
Scene Four: Haver is trying to to be conspicuous but he is trying
to watch the cop and not be caught, he then tries to stall Jessica
to use her as a cover. He sits down.
STEPHEN:
Jessica, maybe if you, ah, (playing her) no, no, yo.... you
(gesturing) need to be in there with your family. They... you've
got enough on your plate without worrying about me.
JESSICA: I am soo....
Just
then the cop walks towards them. Haver moves so that he is hidden
behind Jessica who is sitting in front of him.
JESSICA:
(Cont.) ....sorry (sits next to him) I-I.... I mean, (throwing
back her hand) everything is all screwed up!
Haver
sighs.
JESSICA:
(Cont.) First with Todd, and now (pointing to him) you--
STEPHEN: No, no, (putting his hand on her shoulder
pretending to be the good professor) ju.... ju... look, don't
worry about me! I'm going to be fine, I'm going to go see John
McBain and clear up this whole thing.
JESSICA: Just don't let them
railroad you!
STEPHEN: (Smiles, flashing his charm) You got
it!
She
laughs.
STEPHEN:
(Cont.) I won't!
JESSICA: Okay!
STEPHEN: Thank you (getting up)! Okay, thanks!
He
walks off. Just then the court, for Todd's rape trial, recesses,
and people walk out into the hallway.
Scene Five: Rae has moved a table and found a vent she has opened
it and is about to try and escape through it. However, just
then she hears someone at the door. Haver has put his key in
the lock and is opening the door. Haver runs inside and notices
the gaping hole from the missing vent grill. He drops down,
flicks on his lighterand crawls through the vent, following
Rae's trail.
Scene Six: Later in the day, Bo's office, Jessica goes over
to see Bo and John. She asks them how things went with Haver.
They are surprised that she saw him. She then admits to telling
Stephen that they suspect him. They are furious. Jessica is
equally angry, she defends her professor. John knows that now
Stephen is on to them and that they might never find him. John
asks her if he is innocent why did he run. He also worries that
now this will further anger him and Rae may suffer his wrath.
Scene Seven:
Scene Eight: Rae is panting, wearing just a blouse and she is
bare footed; she has escaped. She rushes towards a pay phone.
She looks around to make sure Haver is not following her. Breathing
heavily she goes inside the phone booth and punches in a number.
However, Haver is on her trail. He runs behind her and puts
a chloroform laced handkerchief over her mouth. She gasps for
a breath, and whimpers. He rips the phone from her and lets
it drop.
STEPHEN:
That's right, just breathe. Just breathe.
She
stops whimpering, the chloroform having taken effect.
STEPHEN:
(Cont.) Ah, Rae, did you really think that
it would be that easy?
Stephen
drags her off. The camera pans on the phone and cord swinging.
Scene Nine: Police station, Bo's office, a cop knocks at the
door telling Bo and John that Haver is on the phone. Jessica
is outside trying to see in. The cop leaves, so Jessica cannot
see nor hear what is going on.Bo gives the phone to John.
JOHN:
McBain.
STEPHEN: (Trying sound normal, yet obviously
believing himself superior to them) Agent McBain, Stephen Haver.
I soo sorry I wasn't able to get down to see
you earlier. I, ah, I got tied up.
JOHN: (Looking at Bo) Well, we're.... we're
still here why don't you come on by?
Rae
is against the wall her hands tied behind her back, and the
red leotard tied muzzling her.
STEPHEN:
(Chuckles) You know, Jessica Buchanan told me something, she
said that you think that I'm
the killer.
JOHN: Jessica is over
eager. She's, ah, she's looking for head lines, remember.
She is
outside trying to listen in.
STEPHEN:
Then she's mistaken?
JOHN: Looking into all
possibilities!
STEPHEN: That's very good, but of course, if
you really thought you had some evidence
on me, I'd be there by now! In handcuffs!
JOHN: (Smiles) That's right, Buddy! If
I had any hard evidence you'd be locked up
already!
STEPHEN:
Keep your eyes open, Buddy! Because nothing (flicks on his lighter)
is every what it seems!
He
flicks it off. In the back, Rae stares on in terror.
