KAYLA: Jack?

JACK: Where is he? Where is the big hero? JOHNSON! GET DOWN HERE!

STEVE TACKLES JACK FROM BEHIND AND THEY STRUGGLE.

STEVE: What are you doing here?

JACK: You.... you.... you want a medal? I'll give you a medal. I'm going to kill your for trying to kill my father!

STEVE: Oh yeah.
STEVE CONTINUES TO TWIST JACK'S ARM BEHIND HIS BACK WHILE JACK STRUGGLES TO GET FREE.
JACK: Aaaarrrggghhh!

KAYLA: Steve.

STEVE: Don't you worry baby, he's on his way out!

JACK: THE HELL I AM!

STEVE: You better do yourself a favor and walk out of here right now.

JACK: You try to kill my father, you pay for it. Don't you say that.

STEVE: Don't you talk to me about killers. He's the killer.

JACK: You don't understand him. You couldn't begin to know who he is.

STEVE: What's there to understand? He's a murderer. What's the matter with you? He tried to kill Kayla and her sister and god knows how many other women he tried to off with his little knife. What, are you as crazy as he is? You know what? You deserve to be in jail right next to him for doing what you did.

JACK: No.

STEVE: Plannin' that escape....

JACK: No.

STEVE: Endangerin' Kayla's life....

JACK: No.

STEVE: Yes you did. That's what I was tryin' to tell you baby. He was behind the whole thing.

JACK: That's a lie.

STEVE: Don't you say that.

JACK: That's a filthy lie.

STEVE: Don't listen to him Kayla.

KAYLA: I knew somebody was behind it.

JACK: No Kayla, it's a lie. He's just telling lies. He's trying to destroy me.

STEVE: Watch out baby, there's that happy Jack smile again. He's lyin' to you.

JACK: You're just trying to ruin me. Why don't you just admit it? You'd do anything to ruin me. Oh no, just go ahead, take your best shot, no pun intended. Or do you save that kind of stuff for men thirty years older than you?

STEVE: You want some?

JACK: Yes, go ahead.

STEVE: You want some?

KAYLA: Stop it.

JACK: Show us why they call you Mr. Hero.

KAYLA: Steve.

STEVE: Don't you worry baby. He's on his way out.

JACK: Am I?

KAYLA:: Oh no he's not. Not until I'm done with him. (Beat) You risked all of our lives to help someone like Harper Deveraux?

JACK: I'm telling you, it's a lie. I wasn't anywhere near that prison that night.

KAYLA: Oh so you were just nice and safe somewhere where you pulled the strings from backstage. Is that it?

JACK: Kayla, it was a lie and (To Steve) if you keep trying to spread these kind of lies you're going to be very sorry.

STEVE: Oh no, you're the one that's going to be sorry for what you did.

JACK: Right. I don't care about him. (Pointing at Steve.) I don't care what he thinks. But I care about what you think. (To Kayla) Look you've got to know that I would deliberately try to hurt you. It was that Ramirez punk who dragged you into the whole thing in the first place.

STEVE: Come on now. You lie so much you stink. You're runnin' out of people to blame Billy Jack.

JACK: I've got nothing to blame. I know what I did. I know I'm innocent.

STEVE: Oh.

JACK: You've got to believe me Kayla.

KAYLA: I think Steve's right. Everything that comes out of your mouth is a lie Jack. I want you out of here. I want you out of my home.

STEVE: Don't just stand there gawkin'. You heard her. Get out! GO ON!

JACK: Alright. But if you keep trying to spread this....lie, you're going to end up being the fool.

STEVE: We'll see. Go on, get out of here. (Pushing Jack towards the door.)

JACK: Okay. I guess we will see. But you go ahead. I want you to please.... please try to pin this on me, okay. I'm going to be ready for you.

STEVE: You be ready. You better be real ready.

JACK: Ready and waitin'. Ready and rearin' to go!
STEVE SLAMS THE DOOR.

SCENE THREE: LATER THAT DAY, JACK FINDS KAYLA WALKING THROUGH THE PARK.
JACK: Kayla, Kayla, wait, listen to me.

KAYLA: Jack.

JACK: Listen to me. Listen, I couldn't talk to you before in front of Steve but I had to tell you how grateful I am that you saved Harper's life. I'll always be grateful to you.

KAYLA: I don't want your thanks Jack. And I'll never forgive you for putting me in that position.

JACK: Please. Wait, wait. Look is it so hard to understand that I still have feelings for my father? Is it?

KAYLA: You know I don't know if I should hate you or pity you. You are so hung up on this pathetic idea of a name and a father that was never real to begin with.

JACK: It is real and it always has been real.

KAYLA: You don't get it, do you? You know I look at you and I don't see a real man. You pretend that you're like everybody else, but you're not.

JACK: I care about people. I care about everything.

KAYLA: You don't care about anybody but yourself Jack and I can't feel sorry for you because you've hurt me too much.

JACK: Maybe you feel that way now but someday--

KAYLA: Jack I will never feel any different to what I do right now and I'll never forgive you for what you've done. Never.
SCENE FOUR: STEVE GOES TO SEE JO AND TELLS HER WHAT HAPPENED TO KAYLA. STEVE ASKS HER TO TELL THE POLICE WHAT SHE HEARD. SHE SAYS THAT SHE CANNOT TURN ON HER SON NO MATTER WHAT. SHE SAYS BILLY IS WHAT HE IS BECAUSE OF WHAT SHE DID. STEVE SAYS THAT HE STILL VOWS REVENGE ON JACK.

SCENE FIVE: A SHORT TIME AFTER HE LEAVES, JACK ARRIVES TO SEE JO.
JO: Jack?

JACK: Hi. I need to talk to you. Can I come in?

JO: Sure. Why are you here Jack?

JACK: Ah.... Steve seems to have come crazy idea that I'm the one who engineered Harper's escape and I can only assume that it came from you.

JO: You know it did.

JACK: Well I don't know how or why you misunderstood a conversation that you never should have heard in the first place but I can't tell you how wrong it is.

JO: Look I know what I heard.

JACK: Look and I know that I'm innocent. The only reason you think otherwise is because Steve has been filling your head full of lies, telling you that I'm a terrible person.

JO: That is not the truth, Jack.

JACK: Well the man hates me. You know why? Because he has to. It's the only way he can live with himself after what he's done to me.

JO: After what he's done to you?

JACK: The man stole my wife.

JO: Oh that's not the way it was Jack. You know that's not the way it was.

JACK: Look I don't want to disagree with you. I just hope he hasn't convinced you to take this story to some place else.

JO: The police you mean?

JACK: Yes, the police. (Beat) Look Jo, if you go to the police about this, you're going to ruin me. Look, I'm going to lose the election. I'm going to lose everything that means anything to me. Look we were....we were friends once.... before.... and I've cared about you. I cared about you before I ever knew you were my mother.

JO: Don't worry.... I wouldn't do anything to hurt you. You're safe.

JACK: Really.... you mean that?

JO: Yes, I mean it.

JACK: Ooooh thank you. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

JO: Oh no, wait a minute, wait a minute. No. Don't thank me. I'm not proud of this. As a matter of fact, I'm ashamed.

JACK: Well if that's the way you want to feel, I can't stop you.

JO: No, no, wait a minute. You know something. Steve is right. You deserve to be punished. I mean I have watched you time in and time out.... the people you have hurt.... the people you have used. I can't even begin to think about it anymore.

JACK: Look I know that I've made mistakes but....

JO: Ooooh.

JACK: Okay, you're going to tell me I am wrong to care about somebody who raised me? Is it pathetic to care about Harper? Is that what you want to tell me? Is that right?

JO: No, no, it's not.

JACK: Thank you.... thank you. (Beat) I mean....it feels really great to have someone agree with me.... for a change.

JO: Ooooh.

JACK: I better go.... I better go. (Beat)

JO: Is there something else? (Beat) Jack?

JACK WALKS OUT THE DOOR AND SHUTS IT THEN STOPS AND THINKS ABOUT JO.
